The moonswatch is meant to do three things: (1) divert would-be Apple Watch buyers into analog watch enthusiasts, (2) revitalize the Swatch brand, and (3) develop a base of fans who will look to buy an Omega as their first luxury piece. On top of it all, these are going to sell like hot cakes. The only people who don’t like this are short sighted Omega fans. It’s going to be better for the brand in the long run.

As the owner of a 2001 Seamaster which I bought new back then, I think this is a fantastic boost for the brands.
No bitterness here, apart from the scumbags trying to sell the new Omega x Swatch on Ebay for 10-12 k.

@@naturalLin Apple watch is the highest selling watch in the world. Smart watches are just a toy and don't have a lot of utility for most people its more of an accessory. But the apple watch has opened up a lot of people to wearing watches. Omega is trying to grab some of the market of people looking at getting or replacing a Apple watch, which they will since Omega is a higher tier luxury brand that apple.

This is an interesting and rather daring move on Omega's part and one to be applauded. A watch brand that wants to please a clientele that can afford the real thing and bring in those who can't by giving them access to a little piece of the action. Sounds like Seiko! It will be fun to see these watches on the arm of many people who never wanted or had the opportunity to buy an expensive watch. Perhaps a new generation of young people will now be interested in watches to start with a "Speedmaster" on their arm. I like these and will get one or a few more when the opportunity arises. I have an Omega Moonwatch 1861, but planning to eventually purchase at least a couple of these MoonSwatches to rotate and wear. I think most speedy owners like myself will want one of these for fun and many MoonSwatch owners will end up buying an speedy when the circumstances allow. My first mechanical watch was a knock off Seamaster professional that my brother gave to me when I started college (I know it's bad to own a counterfeit, but we all have to start somewhere right?). When I got my first job, my first Swiss watch was an Omega Seamaster 2531.80, then Planet Ocean and then I went on from there. Basically, in most cases, people who the buck stops with the MoonSwatches will likely not become collectors. The aspiring collectors who started with a MoonSwatch as a stepping stone will likely "upgrade" into a real moonwatch.

This is what a bunch of my friends and I have been saying over the last few days. It’s not about going head to head in the same competition but creating a new space for people to play. To the casual observer a Rolex or Omega (or PP, AP etc.) is just a watch that would never make their shopping list, but here is something available, affordable and the latest trend so it’s a no brainer. To watch enthusiasts unable to acquire a Rolex (or PP, AP etc.) this isn’t a 1:1 substitute but it gives people a chance to grab something fun as a distraction for a while. It doesn’t diminish Omega’s original branding but shows that they are willing to try something different which is refreshing against over hyped brands doubling down on the same message about not being able to do anything to increase supplies, while literally all of their watches are available through secondary markets.

It isn’t meant to replace a real Omega because this isn’t an Omega watch, it’s a Swatch. I think you’re right that Omega is changing the industry in some ways, and not necessarily badly. If people want to own a cheap casing of a fantastic looking watch by all means. A watch’s appeal is also its look, which is art at the end of the day. Even if Rolex started pumping out highly cheap quartz watches of the Submariner the appeal for the actual Submariner wouldn’t diminish, because just like this, it’s nowhere near the real thing. I can fully understand why someone who owns an Omega, and especially the Moonwatch, would be irritated at these releases. It’s essentially the same thing but without the movement and expensive parts that make up the casing - but then again, if it doesn’t compose of those things, is it really the same thing? The situation is identical to Swatch, or another really cheap watch company, just stealing the Moonwatch design and adding Omega’s logo, except these are ‘officially’ branded and released. What I’m trying to say is, again, these are not Omega watches, these are Swatches. I’d say if someone only cares about the logo, branding, or exclusivity of it, then they’re not really a watch lover or enthusiast, they’re kind of just the same exact materialistic buffoon like in any other medium. For the people that truly love Omega’s designs, movements, and everything about their amazing history, they shouldn’t really care as much or at all because these watches aren’t that kind of stature in any way shape or form. For the truly fake producers who try to replicate everything from the materials down the the movement, they are the ones who are actually smearing the history and true worth and beauty of the craftsmanship. What they’re doing is totally illegal as well. With these, I’m just happy to see people care about and love watches. Unless this horribly backfires somehow on the industry in a negative way, I’m fine with people who would never be able to own a Moonwatch, or any contemporary Omega for that matter, enjoy the look of it, even though it’s different. These watches don’t bring other Omegas down; if anything, it just highlights how unbelievable the real thing is. I experienced what you're talking about, had 114060 Sub, 39mm OP (black), and a GMT (blk/grn).....got a little embarrassed wearing those watches after seeing where the community headed. Whenever I saw someone with a Rolex I knew exactly what he/she wanted out of that watch.... I had a friend from the watch meet up groups with a very large budget and he would text me weekly about a new $40K watch he was planning on buying, just pursuing this ugly need to have the latest and greatest, etc. The more you buy into the watch thing, the further away you get from what made it special to begin with, in my opinion; what is the romanticism of collecting very expensive pieces of jewelry? none I think. Most popular watch stories come people in the field, working on their craft, but doing it with A watch by their side. Not some Software guy buying data an ALS Datograph because the current internet hype makes it worth $5-10K over retail. JUSTIFIED.... ugly. Sold the entire "collection" for around $30K, and got me a Seiko Turtle. Keeps better time than some of the "luxury watches" I used to have and I'm not aware of it on my wrist, like we all know we are when wearing a Rolex, Omega, etc ;) Love to see Swatch doing this.

The Neptune and Moon are closest to the "original" but they are still too distinguishable from the "real" Omega to have the potential to devalue Omega. A video of Time&Tide showed a young ~10 year old girl in the crowd and then getting her Moonswatch in the color she wanted (not Neptune or Moon).
I think Swatch combined 3 things in a brilliant move.
    1. Reviving that hype of collecting affordable swiss watches that they pulled off in the 80s.
    2. Creating a "homage" for people who cannot or don't want to spend the money on "the real deal", but making them enjoy the most important aspects of it. A few years ago, Tudor was pretty dead untill Rolex decided to take the homage market back with Rolex approval. Swatch and Omega now took that concept to an extreme!
    3. Modding watches. Just having a design icon but in different varieties. Seiko lovers modded their watches and Seiko adopted that concept in replacing their SKX line (RIP I'm glad to own a skx013) with their Seiko 5 line.
My conclusion is: It is a genius move!

Wait till they release a toy version of SMP then you will think of which? or maybe after you grab an SMP after a few months then the toy version comes out. I do believe Sam is angry because he has faith in Omega, maybe you should put your feet into someone's shoe to feel it.
Plus Swatch watch does not worth that much 160 dollars I presume for this kind of watch and another 100 for Omega's name and icon on it. In the world, many people are aware of Omega's brand/icon, that is why people are swarming the Swatch boutique to get their hand on OmegaXSwatch Speedy. Why do those flippers want to get hold of it while it is hot? (The factors here are brand/icon and money value) This is just brand/icon recognition. I should put this MoonSwatch in this way, if it does not have an Omega/icon, does it still worth 260 dollars? It is because people believe in Omega/icon does make a good watch, but people tend to forget this is just a Swatch quartz watch, and yet many complain about Toy feels.
The same thing applies if other brand has similar alike 8800 co-axial movements and builds, will you buy it at 5000 dollars? 3000 dollars maybe? After you hard earn monies keep for some years, you will bank in for it? Before or after you bank it in, there is something alike from the same brand "Swiss made" in plastic version launch. How do you feel? Hype? Obsess gonna get them all like Pokemon? By the way, we have created enough plastic "garbage" for the earth. Unless you told me this watch will melt itself within 100 years.

I own a moonwatch, it was my grail for years and finally got one last year. My I initial thoughts when you posted the moonswatch announcement was that I hoped it wouldn't cheapen the image of the moonwatch and associate it with a kind of cheap fashion brand type ordeal. Then I thought about it for 5 seconds and realized that was ridiculous. This is exactly what we need. I remember always trying to find cheaper watches that I could afford that had that timeless classic look but wasn't directly ripping off watches like the explorer/submariner/moonwatch. And when it comes down to it, you just can't find things like that which really scratch the itch. If you want a moonwatch, you want that design, getting something else which has to change itself in some way will lead to it being not what you want. So now you can get a real omega watch in the look that most people will never be able to afford but still want, for a price that most people will be able to obtain. This is great and we need more of it. It's almost like if Tudor was still selling watches for reasonable prices. We need more of this. This is a move against the abhorrent fashion watch trend, not exactly Rolex in my mind. If I'm ever presented with opportunity to buy one I might go for it. Now if they could just put a cheaper ETA movement into some of these watches then we'll be talking real hype, as I would jump over the moon to get my hands on some ETA based seamsters. Not that I don't respect the movements in them as they are now, but I really just can't afford it lol.
