  • Poetry and Music. Vince falls head over heels for an English Classics university student - the only problem being that he gets tongue-tied whenever she's around. Will he get the girl, or is he just a grotty little jerk who works in a burger bar? Meanwhile, the rest of the staff are making preparations for a workplace party, and Karen's had enough of the buskers right outside the restaurant. This episode - the final one - was originally broadcast on Friday, 10th April, 1992.
Quite why we were watching what feels a bit like a Christmas special a week before Easter is lost in the mists of time, but what a way to go out. There's the usual certain amount of farce as Vince tries to convince three well-read students that he knows everything about William Wordsworth, but there's also real emotion and pathos. "It's my mouth - it keeps saying things my brain doesn't want it to" is a great line that hints at the rush of feelings linked with simply trying to get close to Kochanski from out of Crime Traveller. (On a tangent, besides Chloe Annett, there's a second Red Dwarf connection in this episode, far more obscure but very real. I'll keep an eye on the comments to see if anyone picks up on it. [I don't mean Jennifer Calvert, either.])
I like how keen TJ is to help unquestioningly, and also how the rest of the staff rally round after they've got their giggling and eavesdropping out of their systems. It's quite funny to see them struggling with encyclopaedias and reference works all over the floor, when today a quick Google search would be all that's required. The policeman basically demanding a huge bribe made me laugh, while Karen's up to her usual tricks when it comes to dealing with the open-air entertainment and permission for the party. The vegetarian option on the menu being called the "Windy City" is done subtly enough to have been missed by a lot of us back then - more than can be said for the other 'wind' joke later on - and I swear Dexter briefly breaks the fourth wall at one point, which I can't remember being done before. Absolutely brilliant fun, and all that we'd come to expect from the show.
But that's it. The last ever episode of Spatz. Preliminary preparations were started in the hope of a fourth series, but by the time this went out, the writing was already on the wall for Thames, and everyone involved knew that there was trouble ahead for their kids' output. Rainbow got the axe, Sooty ended up at Granada, and the programmes written by Lee Pressman and Grant Cathro... Well, that's where Tetra comes in. An independent company spun off from the Thames children's department, they decided that The Tomorrow People was the future, but only one of the three sitcoms - Spatz, T-Bag, or Mike and Angelo - could keep going. Being the easiest and cheapest to make, Mike and Angelo got the pragmatic nod. A few years later, the same writers were given the go-ahead for Cone Zone, which in many ways was Spatz's spiritual successor, but there's no doubt we're watching the end of an era here. I strongly believe that the show was still on an upward trajectory when it got the chop, and was cut down before it had a chance to peak. But even though there was trouble and disappointment in real life, at least there's an on-screen happy ending for all concerned.
Grateful thanks to Joe for lending me this tape, and everyone connected to the show for, you know, everything.

Blimey, it didnt even get a full 3rd season? Absolute shame. Cut down in its prime. I'm amazed it WAS cut down, given how it only ever had 1 set location i'd have thought it easy to film alongside Mike and Angelo with all their special effects. Ah well. At least we got what we got, though I would have loved to see everyone on location somewhere for an episode, or even more of the mall they were in.

Absolutely. Apparently it was a bit of a surprise to everyone that Mike and Angelo worked out the cheapest to make between that, Spatz, and T-Bag, but that was the deciding factor in the decision.

Thankyou so much for posting these videos and your brilliant analysis of them. It's been great going down memory lane again and seeing these in order. I shall miss Spatz a lot, much as I did when I was ten years old.

Thanks again for uploading Spatz to one of the best channels on UA-cam. I've (re)watched all of it since you uploaded this final episode. It would be great to see it on a steaming service like Britbox - apparently some 'Woof!' is on there so you never know - but at least we've got these old recordings.
More Mike and Angelo please, especially Mike Mason episodes, and more proper You and Me with Cosmo and Dibs on the market if you have any.

You're very welcome indeed, and thank _you_ for your kind words. I haven't taken the plunge with Britbox myself yet, but if it even starts to deliver on its potential I'll sign up in an instant. As it is, at the moment I believe they've added only first episodes or first series of various retro kids' shows, and are gauging the reaction. I know what I'd do if I were in charge! ;-)
I think I'm out of You and Me, but I'll keep an eye out and you never know. As for Mike and Angelo, the aim is to upload every single episode, and we're over halfway there as it stands, so stay tuned!

Well that's Spatz done, I have loved rewatching this show, many thanks to you for uploading them. I gotta say, as much as I love Mike and Angelo and T-Bag, I definitely would of preferred Spatz to keep going.

According to Joe Greco ( Vince ), the show was recorded without an audience ( canned laugher ) given it was the last episode the production company probably took the view to change the sets around and break the fourth wall to go all out on it.

The finale of Spatz is Spatz at it's very best and it's a shame it was the last of the series and there wasn't going to be a fourth season. It was wrong for Vince to pretend to be something he wasn't, but I know his heart was in the right place and all he wanted was to impress Donna. Love can make people do stupid and crazy things. But, I am glad Donna forgave Vince. Karen is so meanspirited and being Scoorge and she was mean towards the street performers and at least she allowed the Spatz staff to put on a Chritmas party. If "Poetry and Music" hadn't been the final episode and if Spatz could had gone on for one more season, it's most likely it could had ended with Spatz going out of business and the burger bar closing down. There are people are out there who think Chloe Annett can't act, but the scene which Vince apologizes to Donna is very sad but heart warming and Joe Greco and Chloe Annett do look very cute together. It's a shame Spatz ended after 3 seasons, it was a good kids sitcom and it's a sitcom both kids and adults can enjoy and it was the perfect time for it to end.

Can't help but notice the location of Karen and TJ's office in this episode. All of the series the stairs that lead to it should show it at the back of the restaurant but here the office is located at the front of the restaurant so there must be multiple ways of getting to it. When Karen exits the office in the scene at the end she turns right instead of the usual left and the next scene shows her exiting through the back yard.
Thanks for uploading all these episodes. I did get a bit emotional watching this. I wonder if 7 episodes was intentional knowing what was going to happen to Thames considering we had 13 episodes in the previous two series?

TJ's office is like the kitchen in Fawlty Towers, which is clearly in line with the front of the hotel yet has a back door. ;-)

Re second Red Dwarf connection would I be right in saying that Alan Cox who plays the guy sat with Chloe Annett and the other lady. Is the son of Brian Cox the actor who made a guest appearance in the 1997 Red Dwarf episode "Stoke Me a Clipper", as a medieval king in a virtual reality game. Indeed far more obscure 😊.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  4 роки тому

Congratulations! That's not what I was thinking of at all. ;-) That _is_ a fantastic connection, though, and one I hadn't spotted. No - mine was sort of a technical one, and something you have to listen (rather thank look) out for. Hit "Read more" for my answer...
      ...
It's the music cue at 23:02. It's the same as we hear in Lister's romantic film at the beginning of the episode Confidence and Paranoia. _In fact,_ maybe Lister was actually watching this episode of Spatz, and the reason he was getting all emotional is that the actress reminded him of Kochanski... (Skip to 4.15 at www.dailymotion.com/video/x6hln6s to see what I'm talking about.) That's the level of "obscure" I meant!

@@VideotapeFTW Good one 😊. I must admit I did not pick up on that, and after watching that Red Dwarf episode recently as well.
On another note, I see before the episode starts there is a trailer for another TV series “Wail of the Banshee”. Which I do not know about anybody else, but I would love to watch again.
For a children’s TV series that mixed Fantasy with sci-fi and included the four elements Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. I feel it needs remembering and it would work just as well today as it did them.
Maybe somebody reading this who has some copies tucked away VHS (possibly a bit dusty) could come forward.

@@damianmeghen8232 Yeah, Wail of the Banshee is one that I'm also hoping will turn up one day - here's hoping. It's horrific just how many of these great shows would be left buried in the vaults if no-one with a VHS recording shows up.
You may or may not be interested in a show called Delta Wave - some of the episodes are on my channel: ua-cam.com/users/VideotapeFTWsearch?query=delta+wave
Sci-fi show from the same writers as Spatz, similar in many ways to The Tomorrow People (which they also wrote). Both Peter Capaldi and Mac McDonald make an appearance, if you're up for a Red Dwarf/Doctor Who crossover!

OMG, is Tommy Boyd at the beginning? Use to have a crush on him when he did The Saturday Show, the kid's show that replaced Tiswas in the early 80's. Reminds me of a young JC Chasez here...

Thank you, watching these have been fab, do you have a patreon account, feels like I owe what I would have spent on a DVD box set if ITV had ever released this series.
Finally, bit of a long shot but do you have any of the later series of Rentaghost? I have the first series on DVD, no more were released, something to do with not being able to track down the actors for permission. A few more series were shown on Gold and made their way onto UA-cam but stopped right at the point where the show hit it's peak. x

That's very kind of you, but you don't owe us anything - it's all about the love of the otherwise neglected shows!
I do actually have a few of the later Rentaghosts which someone sent me a while back, but (a) they're obviously in 'circulation', so probably nothing that hasn't seen the light of day elsewhere, and (b) the quality is absolutely abysmal to the point of not being watchable in places. I doubt I'd be able to upload them anyway. Sorry!
