The real question is who radicalised him? He didn't plan this on his own, doesn't have the brains for it.
The same with the items the police found in his house, not things you find on ebay so where did he get them?

Rudakubana has autism. A huge number of autistic people on government's extremism prevention scheme, Prevent. The scheme was criticised by some, as they think it misidentifies too many autistic people as dangerous, whose interests are disturbing but not necessarily dangerous. It is hard to distinguish who has a harmless obsession from those whose disturbing interest might lead them to act out violently.
See: Home Office to review autism cases in anti-extremism unit and ‘Staggeringly high’ number of autistic people on UK Prevent scheme
It is also important to emphasise autism does not lead a person to commit extremist attacks, however, under certain environmental circumstances autism can leave a person open to radicalisation e.g. Lloyd Gunton, jailed for life after declaring himself an Islamic State soldier, Nicky Reilly, who declared loyalty to al-Qaeda and donated a bomb in the toilets of a restaurant in Exeter, and Vaughn Dolphin, jailed for planning a right wing terrorist attack after his homemade bomb blew up his kitchen.
Some autistic people additionally have a personality disorders (psychopathic / anti-social personality disorder) that leads them to commit violence e.g. Jonty Bravery, whom I think is most like Rudakubana, Bravery was driven by a simple obsession with murders and a need to be "notorious".
There was also Damon Smith, a young autistic man who tried to detonate a bomb on the London Underground. He wasn't motivated by an ideology, but had an obsession involving bombs and explosions.
It is vitally important not to dismiss an autistic person's worrying behaviours' and statements as stemming from "autism", this occurred with Jonty Bravery who told his careers that he wanted to murder a child, but this was dismissed, likely as emotional manipulation (some autistic people will say shocking thing to provoke a reaction).
It is clear that like Jonty Bravery, that many warning signs were missed.

There are a huge number of autistic people on Prevent, the government's extremism prevention scheme. 13% of young people o Prevent are on the autism spectrum (when autism is 1% of the UK population)
The scheme was criticised by some, as they think it misidentifies too many autistic people as dangerous, whose interests, they claim, are disturbing but harmless. Did this criticism lead to Rudakubana's removal from Prevent or the scheme not identifying him as a danger?
Other autistic people additionally have a personality disorders (psychopathic / anti-social personality disorder) that leads them to commit violence, but without ideological intent e.g. Jonty Bravery, an autistic teen (17) who threw a child off the roof of the Tate Modern. Bravery told his careers many times that he wanted to murder someone, but this warning sign was acted on. It is vitally important not to dismiss an autistic person's worrying behaviours' and statements as stemming from "autism", miss dangerous psychopathic traits.
There was also Damon Smith, who tried to attack the London Underground, he almost succeeded. He wasn't motivated by an ideology, but had an obsession about such attacks.

Very like the Damon Smith, a young autistic man who tried to attack the London Underground, who was not ideologically motivated but driven by obsession. Or Jonty Bravery who threw child off the Tate modern, who had an obsession with killing. The belief this was motivated by an ideology is due to Rudakubana's skin colour. If he was white like Damon Smith or Jonty Bravery, no such claims would be made.

Thanks for covering this upsetting topic Daniel - you listen to the news and just feel confused as well as upset. It's good to have someone calmly explain the issues and what's been going on. On the one hand their were a lot of people who jumped on the band wagon of people's understandable anger and heightened emotions at what happened and the apparent suppression of information as an excuse to attack police and exacerbate the national trauma as it already was. But seeming to be more concerned about creating a narrative and hiding information whilst sentencing ordinary citizens trying to get to the truth maybe isn't the best way to handle things. It seems to me failure of this family to integrate and adapt into British society and raise a well balanced citizen was a factor. Failure of the state to know what to do with him and possibly fear of apparent prejudice towards an immigrant family and what to do about their problem child was another. But it seems nothing was done. I realise their are many children of immigrant families that would be horrified at what happened it's just maybe the state needs to think about the possible victims in these cases and the effect of letting things slide due to fears of being called prejudiced. I'm sure other immigrant families would feel the same - at the end of the day what's more important risking being called prejudice or risking something like this!
