How To Catch Snook On Jigs Night Time Jigging Around Lights

  • What a surprise while night fishing! I've never caught a snook on a feather type jig until opening night of the season. Within twenty minutes of jigging I'd hooked two big ones casting around a bridge light and landed a keeper slot snook measuring thirty three inches (33").
    So, here's the story of why I was fishing with a red and white jig. The other night I went to a bridge at night to do some scouting for places to go on opening day of snook season. There were several guys on the bridge fishing. From a distance I could see that one of the men had a really large fish hooked that was thrashing around in the water below. He'd almost whipped the fish and was walking it down the bridge. Sad to say, he lost it. He told me it was a cobia, (ha, ha I laughed to myself). I didn't believe him because most fishermen would lie to protect their awesome nighttime snook fishing spot. Later I had time to chat with the man. He said they were fishing for grouper and showed me the jig he was using. It was red and white with a long red tail. I said, "I thought you were fishing for snook". He replied, "no. when I fish for snook around bridge or dock lights at night I use a jig that is blue and chartreuse colored". He then pulled out his phone and proceeded to show me image after image of huge snook he'd caught on jigs, with one keeper grouper pic in the mix.
    The following day I went to Walmart to get some 50 Lb. fluorocarbon leader for the opening of snook season because I'd been broken off a few times during the week fishing at night around some bridge lights. While I was looking on the shelves, I noticed it had been stocks with a new lure type, long tail feather looking jigs. There was a red and white one starring right at me.
    I bought two different colored patterns of the jig and committed to try them out sometime. Well the rest of the story of fishing around bridge lights at night with jigs is told in great detail in the video.
    In this UA-cam video I actually explain exactly how I was jigging for snook when I caught the perfect slot size winner on opening night of the season. I love fishing around lights at night, doesn't matter if it's a dock or a bridge light, big and small snook can be caught around them.
    Here's the method I used for catching snook around lights in this video:
    1. Cast the jig way past the area where you believe the fish are looming in the dark along the shadow edge of the light
    2. Reel the jig and keep jigging it as you are retrieving the lure. Do this really fast...
    3. Have your drag locked down really good so that when a snook takes the jig your chances of a solid hook set are good
    I'm confident that anywhere there's a light that shines in the water, especially around docks, bridges, rocks or other types of structure, my chances of catching snook are good.

    The jig is a Red-tail Hawk...used in larger size, slowly loping ( pull up rod and wind once, [repeat]) across the bottom for the larger east coast night snook; been using them for 50 years.

      Thanks for commenting, glad you are enjoying the videos. I don't think it sucks at all that I keep snook. I catch fifteen to twenty snook "over or under slot size" to get one keeper during the season; the regulations are working fine for the snook population. Snook is one of the best tasting fish out there man. I'd rate pompano number one and snook second on my list of best tasting fish. Just curious, why would you say it sucks?

    • @ArcherFish
      @ArcherFish 6 років тому

      i love fishing and respect the fish too much. luckily snook are tightly controlled in order to keep the population healthy. but one bad winter and it could be decimated. Or a very bad red tide could wipe out a bunch too. lots of people, tourists, keep game fish, I feel as youtube anglers it's our responsibility to help maintain the population. the redfish population is falling dramatically, in part to so many people keeping them and the species not being as tightly controlled--no closed season. Its all about respect for me. I do eat fish, but never ones I catch, and NEVER a gamefish. I appreciate the dialogue with you.

      @@44studawg i just care about the populations of game fish. I've seen them decimated. as the sport grows so too will people keeping them, and many keep them illegally anyway. it's up to youtube fishermen and people of character like JC to have the conversation. JC is the man and I respect his fishing, his channel, and his all around vibe. and the point of my mentioning it (and he answered me respectfully) was to just keep the idea of only catch and release for all game fish in the public sphere. Honesty after the last big red tide i don't trust the FWC at all. it's government after all. and ran by a former head of chamber of commerce.

    • @MountainManKm
      @MountainManKm 2 роки тому +1

      @@ArcherFish I actually kind of agree with you. I often wonder about what the percentage is of illegal fish that are kept. FWC is the government and they aren't perfect but I do believe there intentions are not bad. That they do try and keep the wildlife thriving. I personally dont keep any fish that are "heavily" regulated, just peace of mind for my self. If i were to keep fish it would only be the ones that are most abundant, snapper grouper mahi mahi ect. I love all life equally, I hunt as well. I really dont know, but they need to figure this shit out with Lake Okeechobee. I live on Pine Island a very old fish town. The Pine Island Sound in my opinion is one of the greatest fisheries in the country and the waters from Lake Okeechobee run right into it. When I was boy I had 6' foot tarpon and 40" inch plus snooks at my fish light on my grandpa's dock. When red tide hit and the Okeechobee water was first released, it killed all the grass and fish. Well I haven't seen much of anything in YEARS at my light. It's never been the same. There are proably over 10 lights in my canal system and 2 of them hold a couple slot size snook. It used to bloom with fish. I'd listen to them feed and pop every night all up and down the canal. Nothing much now. I have been starting to catch some nice fish again in the area and they are slowly coming back but it hurt them badly. They are opening the seasons again for these fish next year. I'm not a expert but I'd lock that shit down until have as "many" as we do green backs and pin fish in the waters.

      Rad Reeling Fishing man, let me tell you. I’m a sucker for the live target mullet. You want the one made of silicone (swimbait) not the hardbait. Now this bait has got to be the best lure I have ever used for snook. Low tide/hi tide and water clarity don’t make any difference. I caught 5 snook back to back yesterday alone on this lure.
