Your a fantastic bloke, I've been in the game self-employed 24 years now, I've had the same thing happen to me on a full gable end, I lost a fortune in materials and paying the lads, like you say its soon forgotten about and laugh after, love ya videos m8, keep up the good work.
I am a Texan that has lived in Scotland for 20 years, so you know I come from a dry & warm climate and using mud, tape and bed- good old sheet rock. I started watching you after needing to tackle a house of plaster needing done. I have learned enough from you and paying a plasterer to come do a room and let me help to get a handle on this pva, skim, plaster, plasterboard and all this nonsense. Having completed 7 rooms and feeling comfortable with plaster, I am still beside myself thinking anyone works outside here reliably. I'm gutted for you. The biggest thing I have learned here is to hire others to do outside work. 4 seasons in 1 day and weather forecasters as useful as a nonalcohol pint, every venture outside comes with a high chance of backfire. Good on you for gettin on with it and for sharing with us and your son.
Texas isn't warm and dry, it's hot and humid for the majority of the state, except in the few months where it is rainy and tornado-y. I think West Texas is the only part that is dry.
Yes you could of edited it out but keeping it real is what makes your channel so good. We've all been there and it's important to keep calm and be as positive as you can.
I am not a plasterer but a bricklayer and have been for over 40 years and in my experience everyone at sometime will do something wrong or things don't go as planned but it's the quality tradesmen who know how to get things back on track and it's important you do as you are only as good as their last job
Shit happens with outside workers here in Britain, just think of how many lost days plasterers and roofers loose, to name just two. You’ve gotta have a positive attitude and you definitely have that, keep on keeping on mate..
I built 2 engineering brick piers. The mortar was perfect The brick courses alternate colours red & blue. Inside the building the piers were to be exposed. A feature in the kitchen. The courses perfect, perps all aligned. Corners crisp & plumb. Then we left the site. It was our own house. We sat at home, looking forward to next weekend to put the beam in. The heavens opened up. In our haste to leave, the tarps were forgotten. I was so sure we covered our lovely work. Blistered courses, perforated pointing, stained facework. Streams of water piercing through the piers from the top. We elected to clean & re point. Left the brickwork as it was. It still looks stunning. The character for us suited the moment. Representing a simple oversight. We love our piers. A bit shite but nature is so unpredictable. & in perspective. It does not really matter. I feel you. I really do. Thanks for the video. Always honest. Like a good craftsperson should be. Terry.
Your last message at the end…I couldn’t of put it any better! You’re completely right…work, family, life, have all it’s challenges but it’s how you deal with it and your ability to overcome it what really matters. Just like the old saying says…”Whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!” 💪👊
Kirk same thing happened to us on a big 3 level high wall . We were just finishing scratch coat when the rain started pouring , we just sat in the garage watching how the stucco came off the wall . I still remember the sound 😢 it was like cows taking a shait , it was upsetting because of all the hard work 😓 but it happens to everyone unfortunately.
@@SEANPOL203 it also happened to us with finish coat (Acrylic ) at least 4 times . Like he said in the video , you have to take chances when doing this job cuz most of the time weather conditions are not ideal .
@@ernestogonzalez17 I know 👍, the expense of the wasted materials is another sickener . I rarely bother taking chances , unless the job is for someone I know well or regularly work for and there is urgency to get it done
Wow 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 that was bloody refreshing that ❤ in the modern era of perfect instagram and Facebook posts of immaculate work, making you think everyone else is perfect and your actually bang average . This is amazing to see that actually the master tradesman does actually have a nightmare now and again. Thank you Kirk 🙏🏻 right now your by far the best watch on you tube
it takes a honest and a great man to admit and show he made mistakes...i can say hand on heart i respect you, and wouldn't hesitate to have you do work for me.... great video.....
Thanks for sharing your videos with us, massive respect, I'm a plasterer myself doing this for the last 25 years, i had same experience over the years, as you said, keep the smile on your face as everything could be fixed
That's why your UA-cam channel is unique, Its very honest and down to earth. Most UA-camrs would have probably edited the bad bit out and try to make it look plain sailing.
Great video and so so true. I used to get so angry and stressed when i was bit younger when things go wrong all at once. Nowa days i just keep calm and carry on, knowing full well life is ups and downs and at the end of the day these things going wrong are absolutely minor compared to other things people deal with in life! Ive had a couple of jobs go wrong myself, but like you i never give up! If you dont give up you’ll always get to the finish line and the finished job will be as it should be
I feel like giving up some days kirk it's hard work making the jump from working for a firm to been on my own.. Your a inspiration for all us plasterers especially the young ones ❤
Mistakes happen to everyone. It's how you handle them that makes the difference. Too many youtubers hide their mistakes giving people an unrealistic expectation.
Great video Kirk. Like you say, something to look back at in some time and probably smile about. Life has a cruel way of teaching us things, we have these issues and we learn from them, that's what makes experience. An honest guy doing the best you can. Fair play to you. Its a tough game and we do our best. Best wishes to you Neil.
Kirk - I recently watched your video about why you do these videos. The sentiment of all these life lessons you are leaving for your son is fantastic content and made me click the subscribe button. As a (fairly new) dad, it makes me think about all the lessons my dad passed onto me and what I want to pass onto my daughter to allow her to be happy and successful. Thank you for giving me an updated appreciation for my dad. I'm a DIYer myself, but all jobs like this have been put on halt for the last 18 months whilst our little one plasters our walls with beans. 😅 Keep up the good work!
Love the sentiment behind this channel, whether your lad turns out to be a plasterer, a brain surgeon or a bin man, he will learn so many good things from these. I’ve done bits of plastering for myself, wish I’d come across your channel earlier, really good content! Hope you get many more subscribers 👍👏
Massive respect to you, you’ve always been one of the best plasterer on UA-cam, but my respect has gone up for you massively, as a plasterer myself I know that things don’t always go to plan and shit happens, well done for making this video to show future apprentices/ people wanting to learn that things don’t always go to plan and mistakes will happen nobody is perfect. The water board, builder, planing inspector. Were arguing over the drawings. Because of a mistake. And that was fixed , we ended up having a 3 meter by 2.5 2.8 meter meter lake out side the back door Because of rain like you had . Yep we have all been there watched a whole side of a house wash off after telling the boss the weather is all wrong but the boss said do it and it all ended in a mess that you have to sort out 👍 great video chin up carry on 😂
I feel your pain I’m rendering a bungalow with bands around the windows with sand and cement and its taking ages to go off it’s a fight against the weather this time of year
did this last year! high end bungalow job, 10 degrees when i was scratching, started the top it dropped to 3 then minus 1 for 2 weeks, work froze, still on anxiety tablets now!! a year later, rendering is some responsibility!
Happened to me a few times but one particularly time still makes me sick , white wet dash on the top half of a house bottom half being red brick, beautiful morning and of course the heavens opened in the evening and run 90% of it down over the brick , worst of it was we didn't want to do it that day because of the forecast but the builders insisted he needed that scaffolding Down 😡
Its a good job you don't live near to me because I would get you doing everything great job in the end Kirk, I work outside doing car body repairs and painting and I think I am going into painting submarines, the weather has been shite all year so far
Fair play mate been watching ur channel for a while now am a bricklayer and mistakes happen it just does least u dont edit it out like a lot of brickes do on UA-cam keep up the good work mate 👍
Nice one Kirk, about 15 years ago I was rendering the back wall of 8 garages, so it was a long straight wall, no rain forecasted, by 1 o clock it was all done and I looked up in the sky and saw black clouds coming our way, I said to my helper who is also my nephew, GET THE SHEETS OUT THE VAN IT@S GOING TO HAMMER IT DOWN, he calmly said it will be fine it's not coming this way, half an hour later the whole lot was on the deck, it hammered it down with rain, thunder and lighting, anyway half an hour later the sun was back out, so we put it back in the mixer and redone the wall, luckily it was just a brush finish to the wall, iv had a few close ones over the last 48 years of plastering. Keep up the good work Kirk 👍 oh, it was white cement as well
Thanks for the video kirk🙏 Had my last job before Christmas go wrong (skimming 36m² ceilling, gym equipment in the way and everything...). This video makes me feel like I'm not alone, can't really explain it. Quick question, how do you render over the lintel? EML or just pre grit?
The coat that you lost. In Canada, we call it a scatch coat. Second coat brown and third is finish. In some older homes, your third coat is a dash coat. Old-school way of doing the dash coat is with a dash brush. You can get a sprayer for dashing now, though. I do way more interior work, though. The trades are separate here. You have the stucco trade. And the taping/plaster trade. Every tradesman has made mistakes. Sometimes after we have been at it awhike we forget. We weren't out of the whomb being a professional, and a lot of mistakes were made to get here. Especially when working with wet. materials. Cheers from Canada.
At least it’s basecoat. I’ve had 4 tubs of tc washed off this year. Weather gave clear then it pissed down. Had the floor all protected colour was golden I had to scrape the rest of it off the next day was a killer.
It happens mate, we watched a gang of lads pebble dash the whole front of a house and they’d just started cleaning up and it pissed it down, took the frigging lot off and there was nothing they could do accept shovel it up and skip it, it was a glorious day when they started and no storms were forecast , we were kinda jealous because we were stuck in doors plastering ceilings in a house over the road from them.
Life gets in the way of perfection. But then that makes life more fun, and things interesting to talk about in the pub. Mistakes happen, how you deal with those mistakes shows your character
I'm a spark and prefer watching these vids to spark channels! Genuine. Love it!
Cheers mate

Same here in Dublin. Rain 🌧. But your an honest soul. I wouldn't have a bad word said about ya.
At least it’s basecoat. I’ve had 4 tubs of tc washed off this year. Weather gave clear then it pissed down. Had the floor all protected colour was golden I had to scrape the rest of it off the next day was a killer.
Tbf and that same job my battery on the van died 😂
I can't seem to get any work at the minute ,I'm in the milton keynes area !
Least the beads are cut ! haha quality. Glad you can laugh about it mate, happened to us all.... "The Fear!' when Rendering.
Ace take on "When things go wrong"! Big respect Kirk!
Cheers mate
It happens mate, we watched a gang of lads pebble dash the whole front of a house and they’d just started cleaning up and it pissed it down, took the frigging lot off and there was nothing they could do accept shovel it up and skip it, it was a glorious day when they started and no storms were forecast , we were kinda jealous because we were stuck in doors plastering ceilings in a house over the road from them.
Life gets in the way of perfection. But then that makes life more fun, and things interesting to talk about in the pub. Mistakes happen, how you deal with those mistakes shows your character
Great video as always kirk! I'm not too pushed taking on outside rendering anymore (Ireland) the weather is so unpredictable! Plus I'm on me lonesome!
Your such a good spread mate. Nice to see someone using an o rule too for k rend ect...
The man who never made a mistake never made anything.
Honest trader ! Respect to you mate ! 👊😎
