If you’re wondering why I didn’t run the R7 even though it also would have been a great choice, it’s because I already had plenty of detectors, plus if I ran the R7, it would have been with beta firmware. I’d share my beta feedback with Uniden privately, but I wouldn’t share anything about it publicly.
I tried the redeso Pro M for a trip from Michigan to Missouri and back and I was not happy and I returned it as soon as I returned home. Still love my uniden DFR7.
I felt I had similar experience with my v1 on my trip to memphis from dallas and back all tho I'm still kind of new to this and have a hard time understanding false I got a lot of k false but the ka were spot on and save me a few time so over all I felt like my v1 paid for itself already. Love your video been really helpful in helping me learn about radar
Great review and great effort by vortex. It made me feel better when your V1 experience was good. That's what I run is the V1 Gen2 and TMG laser defense system. Both have saved me from Ka and K band hits, all the way to dragoneye and Stalker XLR and Truspeed S hits🤘
Very well put together video I took a road trip to Las Vegas about a couple months ago and experienced some of the same issues with my Redondo that you did. Mid trip I had to switch to my uniden r7 can’t go wrong with that detector thanks for the video
As a V1 owner, it's crazy to see how on such a lengthy trip you were still able to pinpoint the source of each false. The V1 feels like it falses if you look at it wrong. Might be time for a 360C!
Glad you had a great / safe trip. Waiting for my V1-G2 to show up. Sent in my V1-G1 when they reopened the trade in window. Guess maybe this or next year I'll get mine. After using a V1 for 20 years it feels weird not to have one on the window. I would think a external cell antenna would helped you a lot. With only cell signals from front and sides and the rear blocked. I can see why you lost cell service at times. Hope the family and you are doing well. Take care 'Spin'
Thank you so much for useful video, but I think still Uniden R7 is the best ,I used Redline 360c very poor and sometimes is not alert at all,max 360 I think batter job,but my experience Uniden R7 is the best,(But no one is the best just they are playing with us to make business honestly)
I also just completed a long trip, from Alberta to Ontario and back, roughly 9000km. I had the same experience with the Pro M and its falses. I too have a hard time trusting the pro m as a real threat when it alerts. I also had my old Escort passport Max running and it kept alerting to transports at 24.124 or 24.150. I watched one of your videos from around 5 years ago and turning on TSR eliminated this problem. I found each detector had its own false alert encounters but when they were both alerting at the same time it would be a sure sign there is an officer close. Seems like the new v1 works well. Perhaps Theia will be ready for the market sometime soon.
@@karan7252 A lot of people would disagree with you, including Vortex and me. A blanket statement "i had so many problems", is valueless unless you state the problems you've had.

One tip I have for suction cups is to apply a little (very thin coat) of petroleum jelly (vaseline) on the cup before sucking it to the windshield. The windshield does need to be nice and clean before you do this, but it greatly helps getting a good long term stick even in child and hot weather (but hot enough or cold enough the cups will still deform enough to unstick).
Glad to see you back home. You live in my neighborhood north of Seattle. With all the crap going on inside Seattle city limits, we are lucky living just outside of it. Watching you on the road makes me want to do a road trip again when this Covid-19 is over. I need to replace my radar detector because of all the false alerts I'm getting. Its getting to the point I'm ignoring them.
Yeah it was wonderful to get out of town for a bit, especially being cooped up and all. The smoke is way better now though than it was last week so at least it's better here now too. :)
Did a road trip about the same time you did come from Atlanta to Montana and my escort IX that's probably 10 years old now, it did quite well, came back from New Mexico about two weeks ago with the same setup and did well too, only time false alarms went off was in Atlanta in Memphis, been using radar detectors for well over 30 years, I believe my first detector was called a radar trap shot by cobra
I guess it’s about time I go back to Android... I really wish I had access the highway radar and jbv1 for the IPhone.. I’m stuck with Waze and I use V1 driver but for some reason when that app is running it mutes everything, even tho all mute options are turned off.. great video and lots of information
For the Radenso Pro M. I do get an occasional Ka signal where I can not find the source. That happens a couple of times per month. I mostly drive back roads so that may limit the issue. With the V1G2, when I start my car, it turns off accessory power, so the V1G2 is off once the engine is running. I have to turn it on, but I mostly always check that it is on before driving. I may have missed a couple of times.
Just bought a Valentine 1 Gen 2. Never been a Valentine groupie. Switched from a Passport 8500 X50. Now, it is fair to say I know my X50 like an old friend. I bought this unit the year it came out and have put NO LESS THAN 100,000 miles of in car use. In Michigan I totally disabled X Band and K Band due to continual falsing basically everywhere. In Michigan it’s, in my life long radar detector use experience, KA and Laser in Michigan. My X50 has NEVER falsed on another vehicles lane safety system. And, I get, what I perceive to be the best long range KA detector, accurately, I’ve used. Range wise the V1G2 Falses more on KA but does not seem to have same front range. The V1G2 seems to be an overall very strong detector, but, BUT! Do I feel as though I’m better protected by the V1G2? Where and how I drive, I’m not sure. As a previous police officer I have been through training, certification, and recertification. So I know how these radar guns work, about the Doppler effect, about the algorithmic logic the newer better guns have. I would like to pose a question for you based on this set up. Is it technically, I mean in terms of the technology used in the X 50 compared to the technology used in the V1G2 for my anecdotal observed opinion of less falsing and greater long range forward facing KA out of my X50? It just makes me think that the V1G2 would have to compromise the size of the front facing horn inside the detector to pick up long range KA because it also able to pick up from the rear and both sides, which leads me to believe that it would have to have some decent sort of detector con for the rear and the sides thus not allowing for as much room for the front facing cone To pick up those really long range accurate hits of KA from instant on speed traps. I find myself not feeling confident that my V1G2 He’s going to alert to those Instagram spurts of KA radar way down the highway like my X50 does CONSISTENTLY! I will say that side detection is not even a thought because the X50 doesn’t Indicate any direction, and the rear detection is basically useless. As it doesn’t really do me that much good to be picking up rebound KA from a police cruiser that is past me and is bouncing K a radar waves off Other vehicles. I find that I get so much false in from the V1G2 That just seem to be coming from all directions all the time that it’s damn near impossible to not simply tune it out. They’ve done Extensive double blind longitudinal studies on the effects of patient monitoring signal sounds on nurses in hospitals, And the results are absolutely clear. Nurses become immune to all these aberrant sounds coming from every direction because they’re so frequent that they’re not really An alert when you hear of them often enough that they’re technically just background noise. Maybe you can even suggested me how I might program my V1G2 To completely ignore expand and K band, and focus completely on laser and as much KA as I can get? Can you think of any reason why it would benefit me from running both of these units in the car, primarily so I can start to learn using my X50 as A baseline to begin to trust and learn what I’m hearing from the Valentine 1 Gen 2? Please do feel free to pick me apart but at least add some useful information and comments in the process! LOL. Thanks all! ~Mark in Michigan
The major problem with escort live is its subscription based. During my trial I ran it and contributed. When my trial ended I didn’t see the need to have it attached to my Max 360 anymore. If it was free more people would use it and contribute. Which would lead to more people buying escort radar detectors. I feel they made a bad call trying to squeeze money out of it and that’s why it didn’t show you anything.
Great video and how all the products work on a cross country trip vs just running around in town or from city to city. Had the original V1 for at least 20 yrs. and plan on upgrading to the Gen 2.....always been a fan of V1.
I wanted to love the Pro M because I like the customer focus of Radenso but I was completely disappointed with it. There are MANY better choices available.
My current level of trust with my new R7 is about exactly what Vortex expressed about the PRO M. --- KA falsing, mysterious frequency changes on K band falses (door openers, BSMs). I'm hoping the update and as I gain experience, I'll start trusting the R7 more.
Escort Live canceled my subscription after 3 years. Sure, this is why WAZE has left Escort Live in the dust. It was why my replacement choice was to replace the Escort MAX 2 with Uniden R8 and pass on the Escort MAX 360c mkIi and the RL360C, which are weaker options. Running Highway Radar with Waze on Samsung Fold 3 dual screen. Running Google Maps on Android Auto on car infotainment screen.
My biggest issue with Waze is the lack of custom settings for police alert. Their audio alert is easily within the kill zone of laser. Downloading Highway Radar now!
the most strangest experience i had with my R7 (updated to the latest firmware) was NYPD Highway Patrol, x band and quickly switched to ka band 35.897 and then k band 24.106. there were no cars around me and knew there were no false k band. just me and highway patrol driving near me.
Great video, thanks! I was wondering if you normally drive the speed limit and use detectors to see how well they do, or do you normally drive above the limits and are actively using detectors to not get caught speeding as well as geeking on the technology?
Well given that UA-cam is public and there’s plenty of police officers who watch my channel, I think it makes sense to avoid saying or posting anything incriminating. I’m simply a tech guy who enjoys playing with radar detectors and better understanding my surroundings. :)
Fair enough! :) so if one was to do a long cross country trip like you did, how important would having laser jammers be? I can’t afford them at the moment, but wondering if radar detector is enough going to destinations cross-country
15:10 At this point I might think he had a radar detector detector and thought that struck near you had a detector. I’m a truck driver anf when I ran a radar they use to do that a lot until I got my Bell STI undetectable. I may be wrong but that’s what they use to do a few years back.
Looks like a tiring but rewarding trip! With running the BlackVue and VIOFO A129Pro (4K I assume) on along road trip like this, what are your thoughts on the quality and value?
The Viofo is definitely the better value. It's got better video quality and costs less. The Blackvue's advantage is the cloud stuff which is nice, but I really wish they bumped the video quality with the DR900X compared to the DR900S.
Hey been watching a few of your videos now & with my budget and me being in England I wanted to ask your advice on these two Radars. I'm more focused on cop cars than Cameras as i run Wave. whistler gt-468gxi radar Or Aguri Skyway Pro Plus GTX80 GPS Radar Laser detector Really appreciate you coming back to me.
Sorry I’m not sure. Those detectors aren’t available here so there’s no way for me to test them. Do you know of any good resources or people do testing over there similar to like I do here? I’ve been looking for a little while and haven’t seen anything, but maybe I just haven’t found it yet?
All the info about how to download and install/sideload the app is here: www.rdforum.org/threads/104240/ You do need to be an RDF member to access that section though.
@vortex radar interesting video, especially as I was driving from Idaho to Portland at about the same time. Cell phone connectivity is an issue for me as well so what have you tested for cell phone boosters that work?
Oh I haven't tested any yet. I was just saying that it's something I'd like to take a look at eventually if/when I go on another trip like this. They seem pretty pricey though, looking online.
Vortex -- I've got a cross country road trip coming up at Thanksgiving, and was wondering if you might have any recommendations for a pay-as-you-go iPhone to be dedicated solely to running waze (just data). In the past, Ive tried FreedomPop, but didn't like them because the data usage seemed extremely high for limited usage. Any suggestions? I'm not interested in any monthly plans, as I don't go on these road trips so often.
Why are you running your cell phones in landscape (sideways)? If you're running "track up" (i.e. the route above the caret), you can get more of the route on the screen for a given zoom level if the phone is in portrait (vertical) orientation. If you are in landscape, you're wasting a lot of space on the sides.
Sure, but I prefer the layout that way and how the phone doesn’t stick up into my field of view as much. You definitely can see farther ahead with a portrait mount though.
@@VortexRadar, not trying to bicker with you about it, but why do you "prefer" it that way? What's the advantage? Portrait layout doesn't stick up into one's field of view any more than landscape if the top of the phone is the same height.
I prefer the look and it feels more natural to me. With the apps I run, I get plenty of advanced warning as it is. If you prefer it vertical so you can see farther independent of the alerts, that’s great too.
@UCgLr7xoTU3XgAeLrEYp51sw I would be interesting to understand how much LIDAR you encountered on the trip. Honestly, whether you have a 360c, a V1G2, an R7, an R3 or even the original Redline, the 'range' is sufficient, especially if running with Waze. For K band which you didn't even encounter it is about noise reduction (i.e. minimizing false alerts). K band, like X band, is on its way out; my biggest concern is LIDAR. None of the detectors will actually help you and LIDAR counter measures really require a Jammer and now we're not only adding another $2K to the investment but a permanent install in the car. Not much is being developed in this area that is portable (like a windshield mount) and affordable. How much LIDAR did you encounter going cross country?
I didn't get any laser encounters. If I did, I would have shared them too. :) K band isn't exactly on its way out. There's new K band antennas coming out that are cheaper than Ka and they are being made smaller so some departments are starting to buy new K band systems as well unfortunately.
@@VortexRadar I was told that was the case here in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, it's the main reason why I bought a Redline 360c and retired my original Redline.
There was a specific purpose I had for each detector I took and realistically I figured 4 detectors were enough, lol. Nothing against the Uniden's at all.
The biggest threat out there for drivers comes as law-enforcement agencies begin to get state and federal grants for drones. Imagine being hit by radar, having a radar detector scream at you, and all the while, there are no police cars or enforcement vehicles in sight.
Well you can get it for free which is a much better deal. Add the 3yr subscription to your cart along with the RL360C and use the coupon code “RedSetGo” to get the defender database for free. bit.ly/2ItHYlo
For sure. If I did run the R7 though, it would’ve been with beta software to share the results with Uniden and I wouldn’t have been able to share the results with you here anyway.
Same. They didn’t work and flip properly there either. You. Can see the motorcycle encounter for example. The speed sign I passed it also never flipped.
7:32 you really should give him space. no headlights on your left means plenty of room to move over. you should really do it for anyone on the shoulder if you have the space. costs you nothing. minimal effort. really increases safety on the road
Totally. It makes me look back and wonder if I was the driver or not since I normally do move over. My neighbor did the same thing with other cops or cars on the shoulder throughout the drive. Clearly this time he or I didn’t and that was a mistake. I appreciate you saying something about it. 👍
I didn't run it simply because I already had enough detectors, not because of falsing issues. If anything, it'd be nice to run it too and get a better sense of how it compares to everything else.
Thinking about it now, had I run the R7, I would have done so with beta firmware to give feedback to Uniden and those wouldn't have been results that I'd be able to share publicly anyway.
If you’re wondering why I didn’t run the R7 even though it also would have been a great choice, it’s because I already had plenty of detectors, plus if I ran the R7, it would have been with beta firmware.
Vortex thanks for sharing on your nice long road trip also all types of weather and smoke and as usual who's the winner in radar detectors and apps
Liked. Cool, thanks for sharing.

At this point I might think he had a radar detector detector and thought that struck near you had a detector.
Thanks for all the info. Great info. But I was surprised that being so high tech, you didn't use "rain-X" for such a long trip
Oh man, I was so wishing I had brought some during the rain! I didn't even think of that until we were on the road...
Yeah with the 900x dashcam article
Hi Vortex, thanks for the video! Just was curious about the FW you ran on Radenso Pro M? Thanks!
Hey been watching a few of your videos now & with my budget and me being in England I wanted to ask your advice on these two Radars. I'm more focused on cop cars than Cameras as i run Wave.
whistler gt-468gxi radar
Or
Aguri Skyway Pro Plus GTX80 GPS Radar Laser detector
Really appreciate you coming back to me.
Sorry I’m not sure. Those detectors aren’t available here so there’s no way for me to test them. Do you know of any good resources or people do testing over there similar to like I do here? I’ve been looking for a little while and haven’t seen anything, but maybe I just haven’t found it yet?
Would you be able to explain he Highway Radar app and Sabre? More specifically how to install Sabre onto Highway Radar.
All the info about how to download and install/sideload the app is here: www.rdforum.org/threads/104240/ You do need to be an RDF member to access that section though.
@@VortexRadar Thank you
@vortex radar interesting video, especially as I was driving from Idaho to Portland at about the same time. Cell phone connectivity is an issue for me as well so what have you tested for cell phone boosters that work?
Oh I haven't tested any yet. I was just saying that it's something I'd like to take a look at eventually if/when I go on another trip like this. They seem pretty pricey though, looking online.
Someone actually moved TO Seattle! :)
haha Seattle is great! Plus family is here now too so… :)
At around 22:40 you discuss commercial vs residential vehicle use. Why is that important?
Because radar detectors are prohibited in commercial vehicles.
No road trip on the Uniden R7 ???? 😕
Nice one!
Good video
I wish they would update the hardware of the V1. If they did id buy one.
I just bought a TMobile SIM card for one month to test a dashcam and that worked great. I’d recommend that option.
Excuses excuses lol
R7 would of dominated
Yes it has lots of K alerts but the range
Awesome vid :)
Thanks! 😁
I would like to learn how to use the JBV1 and the Highway Radar app, do you have a site to show you how?
I don’t yet for HR, but I have some info for JBV1. www.vortexradar.com/2020/03/getting-started-with-jbv1/
Can you do best band settings for the escort ixc in Michigan
@@VortexRadar, gotcha. Thanks for explaining more.
What is the common cause for a dash cam producing FM interference...Ferret Cores (6each) has helped but not eliminated the problem...
I'm interested to find out why you chose not to use Uniden R3 or R7. Can you tell me why?
There was a specific purpose I had for each detector I took and realistically I figured 4 detectors were enough, lol. Nothing against the Uniden's at all.
@@VortexRadar I ask because im going to take a cross country trip from Virginia to California then head south then back to VA.
34.7 from WSP? Ive never seen them rub that freq before
Yep, they use mostly 33.8, but also 34.7, 35.5, and K band.
The biggest threat out there for drivers comes as law-enforcement agencies begin to get state and federal grants for drones. Imagine being hit by radar, having a radar detector scream at you, and all the while, there are no police cars or enforcement vehicles in sight.
By any chance were you sponsored cuz I saw an article someone being sponsored with a product doing a cross-country trip.
Nope, not sponsored
@@VortexRadar oh ok
Is the Defender Database subscription for the Redline 360c worth it?
Well you can get it for free which is a much better deal. Add the 3yr subscription to your cart along with the RL360C and use the coupon code “RedSetGo” to get the defender database for free. bit.ly/2ItHYlo
Will JBV1 with BT interface with Uniden R8?
Sorry no
Your Neighbor must be very intrigued
Why not the r7? That detector is very worthy as a long distance trip detector.
For sure. If I did run the R7 though, it would’ve been with beta software to share the results with Uniden and I wouldn’t have been able to share the results with you here anyway.
Keep up the good work!
How did v1 arrows do with the big metal box behind you? I know you said escort arrows didn't do so great.
Yes you’re right, thank you.
@@VortexRadar Its all good. Just a pet peeve of mine.
Totally. It makes me look back and wonder if I was the driver or not since I normally do move over. My neighbor did the same thing with other cops or cars on the shoulder throughout the drive. Clearly this time he or I didn’t and that was a mistake. I appreciate you saying something about it. 👍
@@VortexRadar mistakes happen. thats life. i appreciate the reply and reasonableness. I know after 2 days on the road the mind goes blank a bit.
Great reporting, you need to do more road trip lol jk
My gf would murder me if i had that much cabin alert noise.
lol
You get hit with any laser?
Can you find proven ways to hide rear license plate from IR Cameras?
Remove it.
@@madsprrd you can get an automatic license plate cover where you push a button inside your car and it covers and uncovers the plate
So a big box of coffee; did you also bring a couple PEE JUGS, or did you make stops every 10 miles? 😝
lol, we'd hold it 😄
What cigarette splitters were you using?
Curious too!
Amazon
11:36 34.3 is Multanova 6F, used in Europe.
Where do you get JBV1? It is not showing in the app store for me.
It’s an Android app only: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.johnboysoftware.jbv1&hl=en_US
Just curious, what were your V1 Gen 2 settings?
There aren’t really a lot of settings. Ka performance isn’t adjustable. On K band, I ran both l and L mode.
You probably didn't run the R7 cause of the falses... I don't blame you. I still love mine though, just waiting for future updates.
@@VortexRadar You're right. Do you know if Automute memory is still in testing?
It is :)
@@VortexRadar nuff said 😉 Thanks Vortex.
