Robert Pruett was sentenced to death for murdering a prison guard at the age of 20. He was already one of the youngest killers in the American prison system, having been sentenced to 99 years for his involvement in another murder at the age of 16.

I could never do that job. You try to save people who aren’t innocent, by finding loopholes in the system. You could also lose while representing an innocent person, and I don’t know how I could live with that. I guess we just have to hope that the truth will come out and justice will be served.

That's the wrong way to approach it in the first place. Everyone has the right to be defended. You defend a client because you are *convinced of his / her innocence* not because there are loopholes you can take advantige of and wiggle a murderer through the judicial system.
When you take a case, you must be convinced of the client's position and have some valid reason and evidence to doubt his guilt, otherwise it makes no sense. If you are assigned to a client by the state because nobody else was willing to defend him / her, but can't prove innocence, than you try everything you can do to reduce the sentence accordingly to law.
Being on the losing side is never pleasant. But you are doing the right thing either way by protecting a base human right, namely the right for defense.
Naturaly sentencing innocent people to life in prison is very tragic, and that has happened many times. This is one of the main reasons why death penalties should be abolished. It should never be too late or made impossible to prove someone's innocence like that.

@@JimInTally nope. For a defence attorney, the name of the game is "can the state prove my client's guilt?" not "can I prove my client is innocent". Once you look at of in that aspect your whole view of our justice system will change. A trial is like a game of chess between prosecution and defense. A person should only be convicted of a crime that can be proven without a reasonable doubt.

Everyone has a right to a defence and that lawyer should defend the client rigorously, and with passion, using every tool that the legal system allows..... If they fail to win the case they need to show a degree of emotional detachment in order to show the level of professional/ethical behaviour expected within the profession.
Just because you have the intelligence to pass the exams to get into a job within the legal/justice system..... It doesn't automatically follow that the person has the right qualities emotionally to do the job. Sadly some never find out until they enter the courtroom for the first time. xx

I cannot understand people who are against the death penalty, it boggles my mind. Or inmates on death row who keep appealing, saying, "Please don't kill me!" Isn't that what your victim said to you right before you shot them, stabbed them, strangled them? They begged for mercy and you showed NONE? I'm not talking about an inmate claiming innocence---if an inmate says they didn't do it, the case needs to be examined thoroughly. I'm talking about admitted, 100% guilty killers. They wait decades before they are executed, they know the date they will be killed---the innocent victim didn't get that. They woke up not knowing they would die that day. And I would say a lethal injection is quite humane compared to what the murderer did---you commited some gruesome, violent crime, but you get a cushy injection that puts you to sleep. Oh and don't forget, they get to select a last meal of steak and lobster, call their mom to say goodbye, and meet with a chaplain/priest/rabbi/imam to get spiritual guidance, all the things their victim didn't get. I would say that our death penalty is pretty fair considering what most of the people who receive it are guilty of.

Soumya Paul I am sorry but I respectfully disagree.
Another reason why I think death penalty is madness. Even though the judicial institution is supposed to be fair and neutral and in a way all powerful, it is still run by humans. Weak and biased humans, not an all mighty power. In consequence there is always a possibility for error. It is always tragic enough when someone has to spend 20 years in prison to realize that he was innocent and that society has stolen 20 years of his/her life. But what about when you put to death someone who might have been. I’m not talking about the guy in this video. Just on a general basis. By allowing the mere possibility of putting someone to death legally, you accept the possibility of condemning innocent people to death. Legally. That is not a risk I think any society should allow itself to take.

Corentin Thibaudeau First of all my friend. You need to know more about how the system works before commenting. Do you know it's not easy to pass a death penalty? Or it takes a lot of solid evidence to pass a death penalty. Now, you are talking about the cases which are most probably some of the exceptions.
Now, we are on another topic of why death penalty is important even though there are some cases of misconduct. Because of the fear it maintains a stability in the most humanly manner. Now you can say well we can jail them forever. But my friend human have this excellent way of adapting to there surrounding. In that manner only after 2 or 3 years he will be completely happy in his surrounding. Plus, you know in prison they provide some entertainment on the grounds of human rights.
Then you can even say well we can make it harder for him like showing him his mistake and make him feel bad about it.But that's another form of torture death is way easier and humanly my friend. Don't argue with the system when you clearly don't know much about it

America already has over 1% of its people incarcerated. That may not sound like much but it’s actually really severe. It’s already a terribly flawed system due to the demand placed on it, and it costs you! Besides, it’s a terrible existence and is really inhumane to keep humans locked away in such terrible places. I’m no expert, but painlessly releasing them from their clearly troubled lives as penance for their crimes seems actually kind. Also the world is really overpopulated and the less people the better. Especially if those people are serial killers or rapists.

As someone with mental help I’d like to say that if you have no form of support then it is VERY easy to slip into a situation where you hurt yourself and or others. No this doesn’t change the fact that someone is murder, but did killing the person who did it solve anything. No! Especially after the victims family could even see the wrong in this, it’s just not ethical. Killing him put the people who in there own bad mental state where they have to deal with a murder they did and they are getting paid to do because it’s their job! I just think overall this is a lot of psychological shit that no one is considering and it’s damaging to everyone. That’s my rant

People are talking about he deserved to die but here is the thing, the first murder occurred when he was only 17 and he didn't actually do the crime his dad did Robert was convicted under the law of parties and second of all is that the murder of that guard didn't have enough evidence on him but he was still found guilty he had a unfair trial because they wanted to close the case as soon as possible

I'm sick of their childhood being used as a reason for being a murderer, I had abuse in my childhood and even throughout my teenage years but I would NEVER even think of harming another humans, thousands of people are brought up in abusive, drug filled homes, but guess what? They're not murderers or even abusers, it's an excuse to get an evil person, who has already murdered previously, off the death penalty and get to live while his victims have no life anymore and his killers gets to laugh at the fact he got a stay, Im glad he was executed

The death penalty serves a primal urge for retaliation and closure. Does removing the punishment of incarceration seem like an appropriate action? The debate over the death penalty is broken down into categories. Moral and financial arguments seem like the main ones. Is there a moral argument for preserving life so that punishment is served? Dead people feel no pain. Is there a moral argument for keeping an inmate alive in order to study and understand the psychological characteristics of a murderer? If we base an argument on financial grounds what does that say about our willingness to pay for justice?

Anyone who is caught red-handed, provided due-process, and is convicted beyond reasonable doubt relating to the murder of another human being, whilst being of sound mind, should be sentanced to death. The deterrent for a crime should always be worse than the crime in order for the deterrent to be effective. And to commit murder of the first degree should be met with the ultimate punishment of death. High-risk behaviour should be just that, and the chance of life should never be in the perpetrator's mind when committing these crimes.
