I was at this show. Nobody there. Blue Green Gods opened. Headliner was Nik Turner’s Hawkwind with Helios Creed on guitar! Great night! Lots of tech problems but nobody but the band seemed to care.
I saw them in NYC at The Limelight in April '94, having just turned 21 about a week or two earlier, same tour. Sleep played about three songs and then a circuit breaker or something in the club blew and that was it - a religious experience. So unbelievably heavy.
Saw them on this tour, several nights later in NYC....un-fucking-believable. To call it a "religious experience" would be an understatement. Absolute and punishing riffage and amplification - the standard by which all others shall be judged.
@@mikekoenig6467: They played three songs, of which the only one I can remember was "From Beyond." During the third song an electrical circuit in the club blew which ended their set, and that was it. I can remember them being SO loud and SO heavy that I swore the sound was moving my clothes.
@@nxne75 that's awesome dude! Their green slave unit amps probably destroyed the circuit hahahahaha. Those cabs and Amps were massive and the tone was insanely hellish.
@@mikekoenig6467: To be honest, I don't remember if they had Green amps on stage but I do remember that both Al and Matt each had two full stacks...so yeah, plenty fucking LOUD. But it was the tone more than anything that blew me away. It was like cottage cheese...just so thick and heavy.
They probably didnt have tuner pedals then, and just tuned to what sounded alright to them that night. Or Matt just tuned according to Al’s bass which was obv incredibly downtuned this night.
Usually at shows they have other music going while the next band sets up. But maybe it was just a mistake because Sleep was already set up at that point
The green Rickenbacker!!
Greenckenbacker
0:54 From Beyond
15:39 Dopesmoker (early version, space themed one most likely)
35:42 The Druid
Prototype dopesmoker. They were only about 6 months into making it
That's why it is ends all weird
I just realised matt using the "colorsound fuzz wah" in the intro of druid here lol
@@mikekoenig6467 its the alternate take, theres a studio version

Sleep played in my home town in 92. I remember they all piled out of this crappy brown van and asked where’s the weed?
they’re in 60 hz standard which is the pitch of electricity which is pretty cool
they are in E standard tuned to 60hz?
@@fekdaleo they’re in a standard tuning between B and B flat which is 60hz
Chris Haikus drumming is so damn good. He was by far one of the better drummer in this category of music.
Sad that he left.
Check live footage of the og drummer for Weedeater. That guy is sick very good showmanship as well
@@xaviercruz2211 Damn straight. Keko's grooves were insane. Joey from Acid King too.
Where?
I was just shy of 21, and there to see Hawkwind w/ Helios Creed and was pleasantly surprised by this opening act ;) Thanks for posting!

I really wish they’d play this first version of Dopesmoker now. It’s so fucking cool.
A rare masterpiece
you can never go wrong with having the sexiest power housing combos of Gibson Les pauls Guitars+Rickenbacker Basses
plus matamps
Matt Pike...incredibly underrated vibrato
Sleep's music is more addictive than any other band in the world.
Yup!
true dude

@@nxne75 in the footage on this video I think you can see the Green cabs. Look closely let me know what you think though!
If anyone can hold up to Bill Ward, it's Chris. Period
Chris man, what a fuckin drummer
this is gold
Someone please restore the original tape .
5 years before I was born, exact to the day, sleep played an amazing gig. That riffs and that guitar tone.
+TheTrueEnjoyME I feel old now thanks
This gig was only three days after I was born!
I was born 7 months later awoken from my Sleep
The day I was born!
I was born in 1995. The riff called to me.
Pretty sure that's Billy Anderson at around 30 seconds, center screen at the front of the stage.
Flannel shirt Matt Pike is so wonderfully alternate universe
I’m really glad they refined dopesmoker. This early version is rough.
damn!
Pike wearing a shirt.
thats not pike
@@96insaneboy yeah it is.
@@96insaneboy fuckin idiot dude fuck!!!!!
It's a holograph of Matt. They couldn't get the nipple right so they put a shirt on him. That' why Al looks so confused.

8:33 specifically is awesome sounding!! Powerful!
Pikes tone... 😘😘😘
With (Nik Turners) Hawkwind on tour
35:25 THE DRUID
I wonder why they were tuning guitar and bass to A# in 94? Like, their instruments just couldn't handle it :D
+thejigsawtwin1 I hadn't noticed this! Explains why it's so ridiculously sludgy, even when compared to normal, and that's saying something.
I had noticed this myself! I have perfect pitch and I find this 1 live show fascinating for that reason.
It’s almost certainly the lack of tuner pedals.

I mean the Boss TU-12 had been out since 83' so I'm sure at least one of them had one by 1994.
15:40 - early Dopesmoker! =D
+Pyraweed Official The Song was really an other one in the erarly days. And way faster in most parts! I like both versions...
Thebeastdopesmoker
When that 2nd riff hits. Its fuckin spinechilling
fuck Al looks SO YOUNG in this
Why is smashing pumpkins playing in the beginning?

Tuners? Oh Marty. Where we're going, we don't need tuners.
I literally read that in pike's voice
holy shit, I like this version of dope smoker !
slowmo
Lynch Chris every time he cuts his hair….and where’s the 8th grader that always tells us Sleep is Ozzy’s favorite doom band??
Huh?
