  • Welcome to the channel JD! In part one I show him how to trim the plane and do a climb and a descent.
    There was supposed to be a part 2 to this video, but upon review, the editing didn't meet my usual standards, and so I decided not to upload it. It was a very watered down version of what JD and I did in our next flight. The video of which you can see here:

    I really like your teaching style. My instructor was an excellent, skilled pilot. An old guy. Had flown everything. Taught everything. But...his teaching style was gruff. Truly awesome pilot. His instructing, though, kept me on edge the whole time. He made me more nervous than ANYTHING that ever happened with the plane. The most relaxed and relieved I was throughout my flight training was the day I soloed. It was like a weight was lifted when he got out of the Warrior. I would’ve done much better with an instructor like you.

      Flying with an instructor was really annoying and at some points discouraging but once I’d learned what I needed to learn and I was able to apply it in a setting by myself, that’s when you know wether or not you love flying and want to keep doing it. And almost no one decides it isn’t for them after that lol. I had a crusty old guy as my PPL instructor as well. But then I had young people for everything afterwards and that definitely made it easier.

    I'm a private pilot from Argentina and I really enjoy watching your videos. It's remarkable how you always encourage the students! I think that self-confidence is crucial when you try to learn a new skill like this one. There are not many instructors that understand that idea, at least here in my country. Congrats!

    I appreciate you taking the time to spread some aviation tips with a great sense of humor. I began PPL training early in 2019, and was close to soloing when I got tasked for a deployment. Even though I was away, I feel like I was more inclined to continue training upon my return because I kept watching your videos throughout my time overseas. I love aviation, and felt like I was still connected to the community even though I had no access to fly. Thanks for what you do!

    Thanks for the vid . My ? Is you mentioned pull back on a turn to maintain altitude . could this be dangerous while doing a landing pattern ? was wondering if more rpm would be better ? Thanks

    • @kevinbatz9048
      @kevinbatz9048 4 роки тому

      Yes, when you have a turn (usually in excess of 30 degrees bank), you will need to pull back slightly to maintain altitude because when you bank the aircraft, you traded some of the vertical lifting force from your wings to act towards the inside of the turn (horizontal component of lift). However, no additional total lift was gained and some of that total lift is now not acting upwards, but horizontally, so the plane will descend unless the pilot pulls back. Pulling back increases the angle of attack which increases total lift (see lift vectors diagram on google). Doing this at low speeds and near the ground (traffic pattern) can be dangerous because an increase in bank angle also leads to an increase in stall speed. At 30 degrees bank, this stall speed increase is about x1.3. That’s why around 30 degrees is the maximum bank angle you want to have in the pattern due to being low and slow

      Did my private in a Piper and my instrument in a C172. Honestly did not notice a huge difference, but will say that the Piper floats a little more due to being a low wing in ground effect. Also definitely a lot easier to chop and drop in a Piper than a Cessna.

I loved my first flight and my instructor - his mannerism was very similar to this video really, and it was perfect. Alas, I really need to get my class 3 medical first before I can go full bore in (I have a thyroid issue which is controlled thru medication, and has to be signed off on, as I understand the situation), and with the coronavirus I'm not sure if I can until this all passes sadly.
