  • In the interest of honesty, Mike was a little apprehensive before doing steep turns. Despite that, he did a great job on his first attempts which showed him just how simple they can be! I love over coming these hurdles with students, it is so rewarding. Now we have a foundation to fine tune the turns.
    Enjoy the flight!

First time I went up for a lesson, my instructor simulated an engine failure. I pitched for best glide airspeed, and started looking at all of the lovely fields nearby to land in. My instructor was fairly impressed, and then casually asked "... and do you see anything out our right window? Perhaps directly below us?" So I took a peek, and we were flying right over an uncontrolled field and had plenty of altitude to of course make that our best landing option. Was a great lesson about situational awareness!
And for the record, I was able to descend power off and line up fairly well for a successful landing approach before we powered back up and went around. :-)
My favorite thing with steep turns is crossing my own wake -- I know I've nailed it if I get that little burble at the end of the turn.

You’re a genuine bloke which translates to a fun/relaxed atmosphere in the cockpit while you’re teaching. I can only assume that makes for a fantastic learning environment.

I've been watching you for a long time, you are one of the best instructors out there. I wish it paid like the airlines so you could keep making this type of content forever.

my favorite part of my discovery flight a few years ago was steep turns. the instructor was ok until I got to a 60 degree bank, then he calmly suggested I get back to a 45. We did a few of those. It was incredible

Hopefully I can find an instructor near me with a similar learning environment as this. Absolutely epic instruction going on here.

Lew, I am curious. about steep turns. When the international fatal accident rate shows that most were in the traffic pattern and on base to final, why aren't steep turns taught with flaps extended? That would seem practical to familiarize a student as to what they might encounter on that famous base to final overshoot. Standing by.

Go 45 then lower 2nd flap. The aircraft will maintain height without back pressure.
And remember to look out when turning.

I wonder why some instructors teach steep turns with trim. I imagine the purpose of a steep turn is to get used to the sight picture and the g load associated with a steep turn in case it's needed for safety reasons. A big part of it would be getting used to the large amount of back pressure on the yoke necessary to maintain altitude in a steep turn. Why would you trim all of that out? You wouldn't trim in real life if you're making a steep emergency turn in a canyon, or turning back to the runway after an engine-out on climb-out... On top of that, it would be fairy dangerous to trim in those scenarios as it would make it more difficult to recognize and recover from an accelerated stall should it occur. I understand it's much easier to do on the checkride day with trim, but kind of defeats the purpose maybe?..

The purpose of a steep turn is to demonstrate aircraft control and smooth coordination techniques. A quote from the FAA AFH: “Steep turns can be conducted more easily by the use of elevator trim and power as the maneuver is entered.” You’re not wrong for choosing not to use trim either of course, but in my opinion you’re making your life harder without it.
