  • War In Ukraine Pushes Czechs To Buy F-35s || Given that the government in Prague has declared that the F-35 stealth jet is its first option for its next fighter, the Czech Republic may very likely become the newest operator of the aircraft. The Joint Strike Fighter has an impressive track record of sales in Europe, and if the planned purchase is approved, it will be bad news for Sweden, who reportedly supplied the Gripens that the Czech Republic presently leases "virtually free of charge."
Previously, a lease agreement inked the year before saw the delivery of the Czech Gripens to Caslav airfield in the course of 2005. The most recent extension to that agreement, signed in 2014, maintains the Gripens in service until 2027, with a two-year extension option. It's interesting to note that plans to field 24 Gripens were abandoned due to financial difficulties following the devastating flooding in 2003. The far more competent JAS 39E or F Gripen variants may be used in place of the first-generation Gripens, which was another obvious solution.
