This game just hit my radar a few weeks back, and so far, this video has been the best English resource I've found for this game so far. Thanks for the upload!
Happy to know that this was useful for someone. While it might not be the best guide, the most important tip you should take from it is to never try to go for 100% completion.
To piggyback on the creator's point, the *most* important tip is to not play this game, at all. I speak as someone who tried to play it, and got trounced by Scenario A. Playing this game is NOT rewarding. However, if you *simply must* play this game? Aim for the goal of any given scenario. No more, and no less. You'll still go mad, but a lot less mad.
26:00 They go to the past. The game heavily insinuates that Ken & Linda are the equivalent of Adam & Eve. They always start humanity. Earth is long since destroyed in their original time.
But that's for scenario A. In the Golden Ending you see multiple Arcs meaning the timeloop was done hundreds of times and in this one they actually go to the future and rebuild civilization rather than reset it.
@24:00 He suspected linda wasn't his biological child and wanted to physical to his wife because he was afraid she was going to leave him because of unsure parental lineage.
Intro of this video got me to do the whole experience for myself because while this game was on my radar because of the translation I didn't look into it. The games mechanics are really enjoyable but the corner cases are maddening so even while following a picture LP for the 3rd scenario I still ended up having to load a 5 hour old save since Otters went extinct before the LP said they did because he mistranslated the guide he got the info from. I even found guide scans myself to double check. The egg shop man also left my planet sooner than the LP and I had to naturally find a male anglerfish. Still a very memorable and rather great game.
There's a playthrough of the original back at Niconico if you want to check that out. Just search for "[PCE] Linda³" and you should be able to find it.
I really enjoyed your video! It made for a nice, relaxing late night watch for me. Thank you for creating a critical take on the earlier patch in such an artistic and comprehensive way! I'm glad more people get to play and enjoy Linda Cubed Again.
@@AkashicMemory I do feel you go through scenery A and B a bit quick to focus heavily on C. But I am thankful cause I have yet to see anyone really try to tackle that endeavor in a recorded video.
I only know this from another video but apparently there were supposed to be hints that Linda was a child of an affair her mother had while married to Hume with either Ken's biological father or adopted father (the 'either' there is just because I can't remember which)
I can definitely see a connection between Tatsuyuki Tanaka's and Yoshitoshi Abe's work. They both seem to favor a certain layer of "grime" to their portrayal of technology, as they were born during a time where it was all evolving so fast that some began to fear how the ever growing dependency on machines would make us gradually lose what makes us human.
@@makokitsune6487 the interesting thing is modern technology fear is usually portrayed in a very sterile way. Like clean to perfection levels of eeriness. While the Y2K fear was very grimy and almost body horror in a lot of its portrayal.
thank you so much for this video! i just found out about this game today and wanted to know everything lol. god bless for sacrificing your sanity for this haha
One of the most bonkers games for sure. And I only discovered it because of the VAs in the original japanese release, mainly after looking at Kazuki Yao's works. I played it way back in the day, without a patch, when the PC engine games were the rage for upcoming emulation projects at the time, wish we got a proper translation of some kind or some wiki, because most of the dialogue is voiced so I can make sense of it nowadays.
@@AkashicMemory True, hopefully it'll come sooner than later. Soon enough there won't be much more to uncover so somebody will pick it up, like old manga. Unless by some miracle there's some resurgence in demented material and people decide to translate "Black Spot - A Cyber Baroque Angels Sage" indie comic that led to the cration of the manga NEEDLESS and was created as a tribute to the Baroque game, since the mangaka smoked a fat joint while playing Baroque and watching the Bastard OVA. Ok I lied, he just sniffed glue, weed is illegal in Japan.
For those not aware, it's the "Whisper" effect from an old text-to-speech software called MacinTalk, which would eventually get used in No More Heroes.
23:50 🤦 Those aren't Linda's actual parents. Both her, Ken, and Nek were all adopted. Hume has no blood relation to Linda, and always felt insecure about that.
Speaking of why hume talked as if Linda wasnt biological... making this weirder, if you keep looking at the tree where you get the ring, you'll come across that kens dad and lindas mom had a romance. Question is, at what point and what did it result in? Yes. Ken and linda might be halfsiblings. So yeah............
Now that you mention it, i did encounter that scene when i was trying to get footage of something else, but i was so late into editing that i just failed to include that.
The translation was done by Eight-Mansions, you can find their GitHub page pretty easily. If you don't want to go through the trouble of patching the English translation, you can always go to a certain place of "ROMANCE CDs" where they have it pre-patched.
Glad someone is covering this game.
What a bizarre JRPG
Its like fear and hunger games before "fear and hunger" became a thing
@@canadianturtle7240 This game hates you almost as actively as Fear And Hunger does, too.
I like that around 48 minutes in he just starts cussing up a storm, completely mentally spent

Goddamn, that make-out sesh at the end of the original game was passionate as hell.

Knowing this video made at least one person experience (suffer through) this game, then all the work put into it was worth it.
Damn weird! Thanks for the essay! And including so much of the cutscenes, having a hard time finding the OG cutscenes so thanks so much!

That was a ride, great dedication from you and the devs who created the games.

I don't know why but both style of the game and atmosphere reminds me very much of Serial Experiments Lain.

If we somehow got translations for all versions of Baroque, i wouldn't be surprised if down the line we also get one for that too.

Well the dev certainly succeeded in making a jrpg that breaks the cliches.
This was really wonderful thank you for the video pal :DDD It was one helluva ride
Incredible work, thanks for the effort you spent on cracking through this gem!
This sure was a weird ride.
Too smart for youtube. Unironically. Hope you get discovered.

Obscure weird scary jrpg? Thought i clicked on a marsh video :))
Always find it weird when a japanese game or anime has one brown character with larger lips and they end up being the villain 😭
23:50 🤦 Those aren't Linda's actual parents. Both her, Ken, and Nek were all adopted. Hume has no blood relation to Linda, and always felt insecure about that.
