    Is it bad Aunt Lydia is actually one of my favorite characters? I find the inner conflict she has between her values, loyalty to the regime, and her love (and empathy to a degree) for the handmaids incredibly fascinating to watch. I love Ann’s approach and take on the character... knowing she’s doing the evil stuff from a place of affection or tough love, if you will, gives the character an entirely different dimension

    Watching s1 right now the moment I knew Ann's depiction of Lydia was such a powerful character, it was small, but the episode The Bridge. Her facial language through out the whole episode was complex and phenomenal.

      Well getting stabbed by emily multiple times and then getting kicked by her when she fell off the bansiter to the floor kinda got what was due to her. I read that the novel, the Testaments, which is a sequel or more of a continuation of that world as June isn't the main character in it, that Aunt Lydia is more of the supporting protagonist in it. She's not evil in it. So maybe the show will adapt some of the new book and give Aunt Lydia redemption. One of the last episodes in season 4 showcases Aunt Lydia and the rest of the aunt's in a scene that mimics the last supper. I think it's foreshadowing that a great betrayal is going to happen to her. Maybe the aunt's are going to turn on her, or maybe her girl, Janine, is going to betray her in the worst way or maybe Aunt Lydia has an awakening and realizes what she's doing is deplorable and really not what God wanted and goes rogue and betrays gilead and the beliefs that she's instilled in herself and others. Maybe it's the beginning of Aunt Lydia changing for the better like in the new book. I mean the show is already showing Lydia be more sympathetic. It's also showing Janine in a new light. She's not acting child like anymore and is coming across more strong and intelligent. She's definitely more bold and manipulative for a good reason, though. The fact that Janine had the balls to go into Aunt Lydia's office and explain to her the trauma Ester went through (getting raped and essentially gang banged by several high powered men and remember she's only 14) and that she should hold off on her severe punishment their planning to execute (like cutting out her eyeball or tounge) and to give her a chance as Ester is really a scared trauamatized young girl. And aunt lydia showing sympathy for ester and listening to janine and actually agreeing they'll hold off for now is not the aunt lydia we came to know. Also, the fact that aunt lydia is trying to keep janine from going to the breeding colonies or be a handmaid again shows that she does care for janine in her own messed up way as janine begged to die instead of being a handmaid again. I came to hate Aunt Lydia but her love for the girls has come out a few times and I always thought it was disengious but how she comes across this season shows at least to me it's authentic. So I'm kinda rooting for her to become a better person and wake up and realize that what her beliefs are in gilead is wrong as her trying to keep janine from being a handmaid again kinda shows that she knows the life as a handmaid isn't a privelage and devotion to God like she claims. So like I said since this season is showing more and more of her in a different light is having me root for her evolution. I hope she becomes rogue and keeps her love for janine. I can't wait till season 5. Janine is my favorite character hands down and her evolution to becoming this strong woman is amazing. In her backstory there was a dialogue where someone said to her that you are stronger than people give you credit for (I'm paraphrasing here but along the lines of that) and to me it's just reiterating that she is stronger than she lets on. I'm glad they dropped the crazy janine. In one of the episodes, it seems janine has taken on june's role of the strong woman who is sort of like a mentor to the young new handmaid's. She took it upon herself to stop the severe punishment to ester and volunteered to talk to her and bring her breakfast in hopes to have ester realize that she will have her eye gorged out if she continues to behave badly. However, when ester asks about June, janine responds angrily stating to not think about June but herself, I really hope that doesn't mean janine is angry atnjune and believes aunt lydia's manipulation when she stated June left her. I really hope not. I hope janine is smarter than that which hopefully she knows that isn't the truth as her character development is showcasing that she isn't the crazy child like janine but a strong intelligent bold woman. Her backstory also shows that Janine had a hard life prior to Gilead. She was a single mom and working at Denny's. It seemed like she really didn't have a support from her family emotionally and seemed that she grew up poor and had no choice to be strong where June lived a life of privellage financially and emotionally from family.

      @@shuntley23 Many say that Aunt Lydia is so different from The Testaments Aunt Lydia that it would be impossible to paint her as the double agent that played the long game and had always hated Gilead. However, there are hints in the sequel that Aunt Lydia used to be more brutal, so this can be handwaved. And given Gilead is even more misogynistic than in the novel, Aunt Lydia being more ruthless in her role is logical if she wants to amass power so she can destroy Gilead and everyone that supported it's existence.

      @@luisisaacdelarosabeltran I'm confused lol do you think lydia could possibly be secretly against gilead or no and aunt lydia is just bad? I read that in the testaments she was apart of mayday? Or did I read that wrong? Also, I'm starting to really not like June. She has been incredibly selfish, and is seeking homicidal vengeance. Yes she's had severe trauma but so has a lot of other people who's still in gilead or has escaped to Canada and they aren't behaving like she is. She's becoming a physcopath and in the finale she says to luke just give me 5 mins when she's holding nicole or something along those lines. What does that mean? Does it mean that she knew killing fred is wrong and will get in trouble and won't be allowed to see nicole and Luke will kick her out ? And she knows this and just wants a few mins with her daughter? Also, why the fuck did she not try to have janine apart of the 22 women to be freed for exchange of fred? She didn't even try!!!! My favorites are janine, emily, the new aunt lydia that shows genuine empathy for her girls, emily of course and I like esther. I wish they would just limit june's screen time and focus more on the aforementioned.

    • @moonlily1
      @moonlily1 3 роки тому +2

      It's true that she has to see things from Lydia's point of view is necessary for her to portray her well, but it's also hard to imagine what mechanism inside of a person will empathize with a person who cuts someone's clit off and then taunt them about it. I understand her seeing that Lydia's point of view is that the 'girls' (they are infantilized, they are 'girls' and not 'women') are people who are lost and the next step for them is heroin, but that's such a strange way to think of Emily, a college professor with a wife and a child, and brilliant woman who likes herself and likes her life, and June, a professional woman who is a loving mother and wife, to frame them as lost souls who's lives are 'headed for the gutter'- I don't know how to put my own thinking into the mind of someone so detached from reality. I don't think that Lydia really think that June and Emily's lives are shitty, I think that Lydia is unhappy with herself and her life and is jealous of these women. She is lashing out at them because she's projecting her own self-hate outward. I think that she feels a lack of love in her life and a longing to be a mother, and likes being in a position where these women are forced to act like little submissive little girls and superficially act like they love her. But she's 'motherly' towards them in a Joan Crawford kind of way. I can't look at that as being 'love' because there is no respect or empathy there. She does 'care' about them, in the sense of having an interest in them, but that interest isn't love.
