I just started watching this video and idk if you covered commander Fred’s death yet but I need to share that even the way he was killed is based off of reality.
what happened to Fred (being literally ripped apart by a group of angry women who were fed up with the injustice and the fear of the r*pes and gangr*pes they had endured potentially continuing) happened in real life a couple of years ago in India to a gang leader named Akku Yadav.
A group of over 100 to 200 women descended to where he was being led out of his courtroom and after he threatened to r*pe the women once he was let out (while the cops holding him laughed as he was making his threats to the women gathered to see his trial bc the cops were all paid off by him), the mob of angry women descended on him with knives and their bare hands and killed him and tore off parts of his body.
He and his gang had been terrorizing the slums and targeting the girls and women in there for years all without ever getting in trouble - his gang of men had r*ped girls as young as 10 years old, he r*ped pregnant women and women who had just given birth 10 days prior, he and his gang gangr*ped women to death, he r*ped women in their own homes, girls walking from school, etc.
I came across a bunch of comments on Reddit and other forums criticizing Fred’s death and how “unrealistic” it was and how there’s no way it was based on reality bc of how horrible it was and it really grinded my gears bc as usual, people continuously underestimate just how much suffering women have gone thru in history over the thousands of years of oppression and injustice that continues to this day for women and girls around the world.

The FGM you mentioned is not technically a sterilization procedure because that would mean they couldn’t reproduce. The removal of the head of the clitoris can actually be treated with reconstructive surgery nowadays (thank god), which is lesser known, but the mutilation is extremely painful and can actually cause UTIs, childbirth complications, infection, and death.

I think Margaret Atwood also drew on the experiences of women at a type of work house that used to exist in Ireland called Magdalen Laundries. So-called fallen women were sent there to work in convent type conditions for the rest of their lives. There were also mother and baby homes where women who got pregnant outside marriage were sent to give birth and often their babies were given away, sometimes sold to couples who could not conceive. Some very dark history in Ireland around women. There is a film called the Magdalen Sisters which sets it out fairly well. Last such homes only closed in the 1990s 😮

Yes! She was writing while Iran was shifting from being very similar to the way the US was in the 1980s to how it is today! The book is always going to be so relevant because like I said in the video fascism always follows the same rules

I have always been fascinated by totalitarian regimes, but none of the those that had existed or are still existing managed to elicit such a degree of revulsion and hatred in me towards them as this fictional Gileadean regime does, not even close. It’s quite a feat how this regime manages to make the North Korean regime appear as a beacon of freedom.

The algorithm did a great job for me this time because I'm currently rewatching all seasons of the Handmaid's tale, and this time I'm aware of Margaret Atwood saying nothing of this is fiction and noticing all the real life horrors ir draws on. Treatment of women in Iran, genital mutilation in Africa, punishment for adultery in Saudi Arabia, persecution of homosexuals in Georgia and Uganda plus the pink triangle the Nazis used, not even mentioning the most recent political developments in America and Europe (Serena = Giorgia Meloni).
So many thanks for taking the time to put this together!

You really are doing amazing with the long-form content, there have been a few other tiktokers who's content brought me along to their UA-cam channels and you are the only one that has kept my interest and I've watched all of your historical videos (I have a deep-seeded discomfort with blogs though so I haven't really watched those but I also haven't tried to watch a vlog in 80 million years). Two things I thought of during this is how these same topics reappear throughout history and yet we never learn which is both fascinating and terrifying. I was also reminded when you were talking about royal witnessed births how consummation of marriages were also witnessed so that the marriage could not be annulled by the church if it was falsely claimed that the consummation never occurred.

Canada always gets this weird "we are so wonderful" reputation, but the Canadian gov is still taking Indigenous children away from home and placing them in White households, just through the foster care system. Sometimes, taking a child away is warranted, but very often children are taken because Indigenous values don't necessarily line up with White values. Children are also not often placed into Indigenous foster families or family members and instead placed with White families thousands of km away from their home. The amount of Inuit kids who are taken away from the North and are being brought up in the South and learning nothing about their culture is honestly disgusting. (I'm Inuit with a White mother and I've seen this way too much)

Very well researched and presented. with regards to the discussion of the birthing centres, it happened in Australia too. First Nation's women were put into centres, where they were bred by white men to produce "whiter" children. those children were then taken and placed in white homes to assimilate them into "white Australia". the worst of all? there are adults alive today who were Stolen from their mothers, and the practice, though frowned upon, was still happening in the 1970s and 1980s here in Australia. so some of these kids who were Stolen are now approaching their 50s and have not found their parents yet. It's honestly one of the most disgusting aspects of Australia, the casual racism towards Indigenous Australians. The government hasn't even offered a treaty to the Indigenous Australians, and First Nations people continue to be incarcerated at significantly higher rates than non-Indigenous people (14.7 times more likely). Despite the fact that over 90% of the Indigenous population has been wiped out since the English found Australia, and only represent less than 7% of the population, they make up over 60% of incarcerations and people in prison here in Australia.
I'm not hating, just educating because I think the ideal of Australia is largely that it's comfy and safe and care free, but we have systemic issues as well and deep rooted racism within our culture.
This video is so cool though, thank you for breaking it all down. I love learning new things!

There is a lot of Australian history that has been well hidden/ignored. The stolen generations and unpaid house or farm hands (slaves) happening up to about 40 years ago is definitely a part of Australian history that everyone, at least in Australia, should know. Unfortunately we cannot go back and fix it all, but acknowledgement does play a part.
On a side note. I was born in 1978 to unwed parents who were married a year later. My mother had to put me up for adoption, then my father could adopt me, and as his wife, she could then share guardianship of me. I'm 100% Caucasian, and I know this was happening into the mid 80s

Very much worth watching, even more so a year later. One of the first "nudges" from the Universe to become a minister was reading Margaret Atwood's book The Handmaid's Tale when it first came out in the early the mid 80's- I thought it was just going to be another post apocalyptic type adventure novel, not realizing that it was going to point out something I'd been noticing around me at the time- the rise of what we now call Christo-Fascism or Christian Nationalism, but back then was simply the rise of the Moral Majority and the Christian Right and it's unholy alliance with Republican politics. The movie in 1990 would would have the same effect.
As my calling to ministry came closer that story along with the books of Bishop John Shelby Spong such as "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism" and "Why Christianity Must Change Or Die" brought home in my that I was meant to be a minister to lend my voice to the growing fight against the rise of this.
During the pandemic, while home I started watching the new version of Handmaid's Tale on Hulu, and I had to stop about 5 or 6 episodes into the first season, with Trump in the White House, and people dying around me it was just too on point.
I finally have been forcing myself into it over the last couple of weeks, taking an episode or two at a time, and then putting Archer episode on Hulu after to just lighten the mood. I'm halfway into season 2 now and seeing a lot of scenes fleshing out the rise of Gilead, especially the men coming together to create this Christo-fascist supposedly pious society that subjugates all women, while at the same time slipping off (and slipping off their piety) to the whore houses they set up.
Project 2025 is the blueprint for Gilead, and the 4th Reich all rolled into one. It is NOT a joke. And every vote not for President Joe Biden or lack of vote due to whatever one thinks is a valid reason for sitting out this election is a vote FOR this horror whow happening on our shores, in real life... and eventually the world.

For context: The type of female circumcision practised in Indonesia is very different to what’s going on in Africa, and is probably the most comparable thing to what US parents are still doing to their baby boys on a massive scale, since they “only” remove the foreskin of the clitoris or p*nis, respectively. Don’t know how bad the situation is in Canada - they do tend to copy a lot of things from the US, but luckily, not *everything.*

I know about the biblical story: the two handmaid’s both Rachel and Leah‘s handmaid’s were not passed from one person to another. They were considered Jacob’s wives or concubines. If you read the whole chapter of Genesis 30, number one you find out That before the end of the chapter Rachel gets pregnant and has a kid actually she had two kids. She died, giving the second one life. Anyway, Rachel and Leah‘s handmaid‘s were part of the family. I don’t obviously approve of the way these women used their handmaids, but, at least in that day it was somewhat excepted, just like we have our LGBT today. But in the meantime, Rachel and Leah would bring these two handmaids into the family. Later on in Genesis and I forget which chapter it is just now, Jacob’s oldest son, got private lessons from one of the handmaid‘s and Jacob was upset about it because he considered his son culpable because of sleeping with his father‘s concubine. Anyway, hope that helps. I love to read the Bible so I can tell you that definitely it was twisted all out of shape. The only other time you see a handmaid used as a surrogate was with Sarah and Abraham. They had a handmade named HAGAR. She was also used in this way. But when you find the word handmade in the Bible, it mostly means a personal assistant. so basically what you have here is for women sharing the same husband. None of them are called of Jacob. And again, the handmaid’s weren’t shipped off never to be seen or heard of again. They became Jacob’s two other wives. By the way, just because something in the Bible doesn’t mean, that’s how God wants us to handle things. A lot of Bible stories show how dysfunctional we really are and that’s one of them. I would sure hate to see a society base itself on one of the most dysfunctional families in the Bible.

I think an important thing to mention is that not every fascist fulfills every single one of the 14 points. because humans generally don't fall quite that neatly into definitions.
this is an important point because a lot of real life fascists deny being such because they differ in one or two of the 14 points.
also, as a historian I have to say your history references were generally absolutely great! you pointed out some big parallels, some of them comparably unknown. I am not sure you're right about Mary Webster, because mock executions are sadly a pretty common torture method, so there is an almost unlimited amount of possible references the fake hangings could be based on. mary webster is a possibility, but I think it's just more mental torture by a fascist regime.
also, as sweden was not invaded in world war 2, the nazis did not abduct a lot of swedish kids. they abducted norwegian and danish ones. but that's just nitpicking.
swedish people were invited over voluntarily. quite a lot of them joined the Waffen-SS

To address your first point first: you’re completely right!! I’m actually sort of kicking myself now for not making that more clear because that’s a super common scale flat argument facists DO make!
To your second: since I made this video a while ago I’m not certain of this or not but I vaguely remember Mary Weber’s significance being that the author may have mentioned that as a point of inspiration but I might be misremembering tbh. And lastly you’re so right that’s actually my bad about the Swedish women

the dehumanization of slaves went even further than "just" the name. slaves were often purposely split up and separated from other slaves of the same origin. they wanted thenew slaves to have a harder time communicating and identifying with their fellow slaves.
it has caused a massive issue of uprooting amongst african american communities. that's largely why african americans created their own new culture(s). because they lost the reference to their own original culture, because they simply don't know what exact culture their ancestors were from.
the "offred" thing is of course showing a sense of the person being property but it is also simply a form of dehumanisation.

I don’t know whether you’ve been a whole video but this other thing, but the child bride is definitely something that happens in countries where women have a few rights such as in countries were Cheree law exists and especially in countries. You can’t say Muslim anymore so I guess you have to find another way of saying that. It’s interesting how Mrs. Atwood or miss Atwood conflated biblical things with Karen things. Like France there’s nothing in the Bible. It says a woman can’t read. A lot of people didn’t know how to read up until you know until very recently in the historical scheme of things. For instance, until the printing press came along, very few people could read. so this is a very interesting video. I’ve read both books the handmaid‘s tale and the Testament, seen the movie and the Hulu series. The Hulu series is kind of triggering. Every time, aunt Lydia, or one of the other ants abuses the women with their cattle pods and stuff, and, even when Serena Joy would beat June, it really pissed me off. If it had been me, I probably would’ve killed Serena Joy instead of Fred. If I if I were June. Lol. There was a child ride in the handmaid‘s tale called Esther. She was married to a slobbery old commander who was probably 80 years old if he was a day. And she was like what 14.

A lot of things that people.on the west do not get about the Bible, is that so many of the things writen are not actually suggestions/commands about how one should live but rather a recorded history of how the world also used to be around that time..with all the good and the bads of it. If you read the Bible carefully and consult its interpretations from the only ones who could ever interpret it properly (the Saints and original Church fathers) you will know that ex. Just because Rachael used a maid at that time, doesn't mean that the Bible suggests such practices for Christians..this is occuring in many parts of the Bible who are merely historical recordings and nothing else. What these "christian" churches in the US do ( and no wonder the US is full of cults) is that first of all, they use mistranslated versions of the Bible, interpret the Bible on their own (arrogance) which is very dangerous as well and they also take versea of the Bible which are symbolic and metaphorical in both Greek and Hebrew and translate them literally! And that distortion alone has created a bunch of heresies in the west! So not only do they not realize the several mistranslated parts from Greek and Hebrew but they also can't interpret it properly because they dont recognize MANY of the non-literal verses of it. This leads to heresies and cultish teachings such as the ' Rapture'.
