Le Mans lap record - Kobayashi

  • Driver: Kamui Kobayashi
    Car: #7 TOYOTA GAZOO RACING
    The fastest ever lap at 24 Heures du Mans
    The Japanese driver revealed that he was shocked to find out that he had set a 3m14.791s when he crossed the line at the end of his qualifying run in the first of Thursday evening's two sessions.
    "I thought I could do a 3m16s or maybe a 3m15s, but when I saw 3m14s, I thought wow," he said. "I went at the right time on the right tyres and it was correct to go straight after the red flag.
    "It was a brilliant lap - no mistakes and no traffic."
    Kobayashi's lap eclipsed Neel Jani's 3m16.887s qualifying record on the current configuration of the Le Mans circuit from 2015 and was also the fastest ever in the history of the 24 Hours.
    The lap aboard the #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid was completed at an average speed of 156.52mph.
    That meant Kobayashi went faster than Hans Stuck's 156.47mph pole lap for Porsche in 1985, which was set before the two chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight and the one at Dunlop Curve were added to the circuit.

    The real magic here is the fact he not only broke the record but had to coast through the finishing line to save maybe half ounce of fuel through an entire lap (he didn't misjudge a single inch of track at 180mph for 3minutes.. Insane

    A lot of people don't understand why this is so impressive, Le Mans used to be a LOT less curvey, with a full straight down the back. There was around 12 less turns in the old le Mans Circuit, that's why the record stood for so long.

      it doesn't matter if it's after a break or something, there are 60 cars that share the track at any time at any session, when you do your outlap and start your timed lap, there are still cars exiting pits to start their outlap and as the fastest class you catch plenty of those cars in their outlap.
      Sadly, the pole at Le Mans is first due to luck on traffic before being due to performance

    I think that I could come real close to that record with my mom's mobility van. Since the majority of the turns are right handers, I could open the side doors and let the wheelchair lift down to about even with the inside floor. That would bias the weight of the van towards the right and give me a heck of an advantage in the right turns.
    Then, if I could talk my mom into sitting in her power chair, she could move the wheelchair to the appropriate side of the van for each upcoming turn. It would be a sort of active cornering system. Yeah, I think it could work. Hmmmmmm

    Did he slowed down a bit right before crossing the finish line? Also, there's a lot of dead insects on that windshield LOL, I can't imagine how bad it can get.

    I always liked him in F1, how McLaren picked Sergio Perez over Kamui-san I will never understand, oh well cause McLaren sucks now which is a shame cause they were my favorite team because of Senna

      Because he's Asian. Do you know Keiichi Tsuchiya? He rode Mclaren F1 with a British driver in Le Mans. The manager of the team was also a British and the manager kept letting a British drive the machine in preliminary qualifier. And he couldn't record enough time to go to qualifier. Finally, the manager used Tsuchiya just before the end of time attack and the team could go to qualifier. This story tells that Asian drivers can't drive better machine even if they are as good as other drivers. 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button is currently driving NSX in GT500 with Yamamoto but Yamamoto is always faster than Button in time attack. This shows that Asian drivers are as good as other drivers.

    Good God it just shrugs off the Mulsanne chicanes.. I've spent a lot of time with the 919 at Sarthe in Assetto, and it sure as hell won't match that level of grip.

  • @advantist
    @advantist 5 років тому

    I would assume he could have gotten faster without the max fuel consumption because with the normal power sure he is slower but he wouldnt have had to let off and that alone would have saved him maybe 2 or 3 seconds

    why is the wiper up in the middle of the screen like that???

    • @Geoff69420
      @Geoff69420 4 роки тому

      Aerodynamics and symmetry. The LMP cars have a single wiper blade which needs to wipe both halves of the windscreen equally when in use, and needs to be centered when not in use.
      The engineering on those cars is a bit more precise than the engineering on the grocery-getters you and I drive.

    • @hydro8390

      They have a fuel limit per lap

    • @xXUnoriginalNameXx33Meygaera
      @xXUnoriginalNameXx33Meygaera 6 років тому

      He must have been a bit high on the fuel usage on that lap in particular. It would make more sense to wait until the breaking zones to lift or mid corners, like he does on other turns, and treat the finish line just line any other straight.

  • @joshsvoss
    @joshsvoss 5 років тому

    3:20 Why does it sound like he got off the accelerator right before getting to the finish line? It even looks like the car slows down a bit before speeding up again past the finish line.

    • @TennysonPesco
      @TennysonPesco 5 років тому +2

      Because of fuel consumption... The engineers considered that doing that would be the quickest way around the track.
