Thoughts on the LUMIX G100? This was my first time testing it and it's a fun camera to use! While I wouldn't shoot a UA-cam show on it, it's a great camera for travel and general photography. Let me know your thoughts! Hopefully your Mom can return the G100 and swap it for the G100D. I elected not to take my GH5S to Japan this summer because I wanted to travel light. After getting back I realized I needed a small travel camera that had a viewfinder (I needed "readers" to see the LCD screens of my phone and camcorder, plus lcd screens in sunlight were a pain). Anyway I got myself a G100D. Now if Panasonic would update its firmware like they did on the S9 to eliminate the forced time record restrictions and let it go until it overheats, that would be a good thing.
Thank you for covering this camera Shane. Last April 2022 , I gifted my wife this camera during our wedding day. Then fast forward Jan 2024 I used this camera during our travel to Hongkong and some Local staycation in Philippines. During that time I carried some affordable tt artisans and 7 artisans manual focus lens. I had fun using this camera taking pictures of my wife throughout the whole vacation. As of August 2024 I purchased the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 and it’s just an amazing combo for this one which I used for our vacation in Boracay.
Worth mentioning the 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 is in fact stabilised, "Mega OIS": decent lens for the G100. The stabilisation is much better on the 12-35mm f/2.8. (I regularly use both lenses): it is better in every way but is a chunk of metal.
Ah cheers! It didn't look as smooth as my 12-35mm in my handheld tests! Thanks for the heads up on that one. I only had the camera in my hands for a short period of time. :)
Fantastic camera body. Unfortunately I had mine stolen in Lyon during the Rugby World Cup. I've had images taken with this camera printed in a number of magazines so it's more than good enough for professional work.
I bought it as a vlogging camera, and realized it's a great travel camera. The kit lens is terrible for vlogging as it assumes you're in full sun or in a well let studio. I was doing travel vlogging which occurs at inconsistent lighting. If they had included a faster lens, that would have helped. Needing to buy a separate lens defeats the purpose of buying the kit for vlogging.
If they had a G85 with phase detect AF, I’d still be using that to this day. I’m hoping they soon create a micro 4/3 version of the S9. I’d buy it for sure for travel.
G100 owner and i use it for taking photos and video when i dont want to drag the heavy artillery out - yeah its got limitations (like always using a tripod or stable surface) but i can just grab n go with this and its better than using a phone plus if you have great M43 lenses you can get really good results - go the Mum Camera :)
For a telephoto zoom, the Lumix 35-100 f4-5.6 is best for a camera like this. Paired with the 12-32, you have a nice combo. Or if you dont mind a more chunky lens, get the 14-140.
Great review. I love my inexpensive, light G100 for exactly the reasons you describe. Yes I miss IBIS, but I always use lenses with OIS to compensate. The G100 is the camera that made me sell my GX9, which does have IBIS, but was heavier and somewhat larger. I kept reaching for my G100 instead of my GX9. I do only shoot 1080p, but that's good enough for me. I use the kit lens from the Panasonic G7 I once owned (14-42mm with OIS) and love that combination.
I really wish Panasonic would release something like this in a small weather sealed magnesium body. If they added the bigger blk12 battery and the new 25mp PDAF sensor, it would sell like crazy.
The G100 is a great travel camera. I got mine new last year off of eBay for $350 and that included the 12-32 lens. I was using a GM1 (another great camera) for travel but the G100 has better ergonomics and has the tilt screen and viewfinder the GM1 does not. I’m not a vlogger and realize the G100 has limitations on the video side. But for stills it works great. The Pana/Leica 15mm is my lens of choice and the combination rocks.
I noticed - December 2024, United Kingdom - that there are a lot of used GH5 cameras available currently. One can get one in good condition for a bit less than a new G100D. Might be something to consider for some types of user, especially those more interested in video.
I got it to be a second body in my travel pack. It serves that function perfectly. Often it is the camera I reach for as I leave the hotel room in the morning for a day of exploration.
This is the only camera I have currently. For photography I've really been enjoying it. Street photography with the 25mm f/1.7 in London recently was great. I want to upgrade to something with more modern features such as Open gate and the PDAF, but Lumix offers nothing as an upgrade. The about to be released Fuji X-M5 looks like the G100 II we so far haven't got.
Look at the G9ii for PDAF. Don’t know if it has open gate. The price is com Down. At my local camera store it is selling for $1299. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Why all the negativity regarding this camera??? As much as I love my old GX85 I would choose this because it has an audio input. Fantastic value and so portable! I would not hesitate to use this for youtube. Does it work with the Lumix app? If so, in a desktop situation like yours I would set it to portrait mode and single point focus. Use the app to focus then start/stop from the chair. No need for LOG/LUT or . Learning basic lighting and white balance skills are the most valuable investments of time in my experience. For audio the DJI lav system seems like the best choice. If there is an audio problem with the camera the belt pack can record a backup. Or a cheaper alternative is an $80 RODE SmartLav and an extension cable.
I recently looked at a few as I wanted a travel camera. My take was that this looks like a very good little (mainly) photography camera. However, in the market, sales galore, I saw better value in the G85. Personal things come into play and the G90/95 also goes on sale but my decision was the G85/12-62 kit. Some weather, ''sealing'', balances well with that lens and I'll add something else. Primarily bought for photography but will do enough on the video side for what I want from it. Coming for Canon, no Lumix experience, the menus were a day of pain but I think well worth it (now the experience is done 😂).
Bought the G100 last year and I use it for small video works. I like it because is compact, light and gets me a good video quality for what I do. I mount it in a gimbal and film in 4k 12mm.
Have you ever looked at the G95? I'm wondering if it'd be a good backup cam and curious how it compares to the G100 and maybe G9. I like the form factor, price looks OK, just not sure if it's too dated.
I'm so glad for this camera and perhaps that it was misunderstood because I got one open box for 1/2 price. It is the perfect small mft second body for me, and like the ones Panasonic used to make.
I picked up a used G95 for $300. It is just a little bigger than the G100, but has IBIS and several other features the G100 doesn't have. Sadly the G95 also doesn't have USB C which is in my opinion one reason why many of the Panasonic cameras of that era didn't sell as well as they should have and now seem to be cameras Panasonic doesn't want to make anymore. Sony Cameras has USB C, but were missing many of the great features Panasonic had. The GX9 and G95 are a great size for a MFT camera, but just need upgraded internals.
Panasonic wanted to sell it as a vlogging camera. At last the camera get the position it should have had from the beginning: a travelling/photo walk/EDC camera. The lack of stabilization is not an issue for that purpose. As the late success of the GM5 shows, the G100/G100D will have a second life. And contrary to the former it is cheap second hand. I would have like the camera with a top back wheel dial for exposure compensation. But it suits me well has an EDC camera. btw Panasonic I am not going FF and their ridiculous lenses. Waiting for the GX9 mk II. Thanks
I still own the tiny Lumix GF5! The G100 is much larger (relatively) and no good in video. Panasonic should just release a GF5 (Mark 2) with the same form factor and improve sensor.. I would then consider upgrading.
Took some amazing photos during Eras Tour with this camera. Would I have preferred a Panasonic body with phase-detect? Of course, but the cost would be 3-4x, not to mention size/weight increase as well. Many Panasonic lens have OIS anyway - which does give you flexibility there...even though I still carry some Olympus glass (e.g. 75 f1.8, the goat). I'm of mixed opinions on daylight/wide zooms - since honestly modern smart phones can cover that easily. Kind of best tool for the job, if you bring out a dedicated camera, put some quality class on it (either telephoto primes or heavy 2.8 zooms, or Panny's heavy 1.7 zooms lol). Considering the weight of the 2.8 or 1.7 zooms, this makes telephoto primes the obvious choice imo. I know a specific older zoom (e.g. 7-14 f4) didn't played nice on Olympus bodies, might be worth finding one to attach to the G100. There was a time there wasn't a good selection of rectilinear UW, but that has changed thankfully in last several years. All this is to say, given the great lens selection, I do wish Panasonic would do more with the smaller bodies, since it doesn't look like they have any interest below the G9 body size. Don't have any interest in rebuilding my lens catalog with L-mount either, so who knows. Well at least quality glass keeps, so I'm in no rush.
G100D as others mention for upgraded EVF and USB-C. DR seems better than my older GX80, but I miss IBIS. Release GX update please that EVF placement on LHS is better for mounting mics. Lenses need NDs to combat 1/500s mech shutter close limit.
Just waiting for Rhett Thompson to chime in.. 3......2.......1....... GO! :) My only issue is for photo without that stabilization, it's just... a basic small camera. Especially now after modifying the firmware for the EM-1 mk II that thing is incredible for the price. Unlimited recording, incredible stabilization, dual card slots, all the advanced photo modes and AF from the EM-1X, it's the best deal in the used marketplace hands down and still pretty light. The EM-5 mk III can be good but is overpriced so I'm happier to have the OM-5. A G100 mk II with PDAF, some more advanced photo modes and IBIS would be a real winner. Granted, you'd call it a G9 II save some weight. NAMM is just around the corner :)
People always get upset over Panasonic decisions and for some reason they all seem to work out just right. People always also blame how they market things. I don't buy that at all. I think people see beyond the marketing to the features they want.
The kit lense is not bad at all its very sharp wide open, much sharper than 25mm 1.7 which is super soft wide open. You have to stop it down to at least 2.8 to get it nearly as sharp as 12-32 kit lense.i own both of them
I had it, but the EVF is total crap. Once again, this camera exemplifies the problems with Panasonic marketing. My biggest problem with it was massive moiré in 1080p and the 4k has unusable jello. I think the EVF problems were addressed with the G100D. I found the audio to be rather good, much better than the GX line (all of them). The last problem is the flash sync, which is only at 1/50. Still this camera is more of a "travel camera" than the S9, which is a disaster for photography (especially at that $1500 price point). Why Panasonic won't make a decent, small M43 real hybrid with: 1) full-sensor readout; 2) IBIS; 3) PDAF. I cannot believe that Panasonic somehow hasn't been able to deliver on that. It's baffling! I have now sold all of my M43 gear and will move on to Fuji because of this major point. Sad because I really love M43.
@@RhettThompsonFilm Having shot the E-M5 iii a lot for video. That camera offers pretty much everything, but now that the X-M5 and X-S20 are out, the E-M5iii, O-M5, and G100/D just look old in terms of tech. M43 is going to get trounced by Fuji IMO (if they can make them fast enough). Why couldn't they just come out with a G9ii in the S9? The M43 lens ecosystem is perfect!
