After a long period since delivery in 2022 and lots of testing, the open gangway version of the R211, the R211T, finally enters service on the (C) line for revenue testing!
The R211T is the same as the R211A but features open gangways instead of having doors between the cars. This makes it significantly easier to switch cars onboard the subway train. This is the first time since the 1960's that a nyc subway train uses open gangways! (correct me if I'm wrong)
I was not expecting it but my experience riding the R211T for the first time was way more exciting that I though it would be. It impressed me more that the R211A I must say. It is a fun train!
(I was not intending to make this video half an hour long...but here we go)

You know, I feel like some of the people who got onto this train were like “oh, this is new” or “oh, it’s just another train I haven’t seen before”. But for the rest of us, it’s part of a new generation of subway car.

The soft shell varient is probably much cheaper, while more spacious and easier to maintain. I hope they choose that varient instead

Very nice video, you have some really great footage in this one! My favorite parts were the ones where you film the gangways during curves and the racing part at the end.

Hard shell looks very durable. Given that the MTA will keep trains running for 50 years I think hardshell is best. Soft deterioriates. Like NJ Transit Napoleon Busses did within 20 years.

I haven't checked out this train yet but I like how the hard shell variant looks. It's a lot brighter walking between the cars than the soft shell. But in the case of NYC, I could see them go for the soft shell work. Either way I'm glad and hope the MTA go with these types of trains.

I think it’s the smarter choice. Also helps separate the cars better as if there is an open door. 🚪

For some reason I can’t stop thinking about how someone dumb enough could die in between the soft variant.

The soft part in any articulated bus always smells and looks raggedy on in the B1 from inside. It is a smarter choice for long run to go with hard shell.🐚

Why are there two different variants? Do we know which one the MTA is ordering for the rest of the fleet?

It's a damn shame these trains are banned from doing any express runs, they should have had open gangways in 1 10-car set instead of 2 5-car sets similar to the Montreal STM Azur trains with their 9-car sets, Toronto TTC Rocket trains with their 6-car sets, and Vancouver Translink Skytrain Mark III 4-car sets!!!

Trains are not banned from express trains, the MTA said that just chose them to run on local. Its so true, but the way people are on the subway, they need to have a conductor

This would have made sense. Especially since the 75 foot cars have 4 doors so this would just need 3. Would have made more sense. The window would have looked normal and more seating importantly.

TBH the r211 is mid. I took it around 65 times & it didn't meet my expectations. MTA is too conservative & it just feels like they don't want to inovate.

I mean that's true but that's not the problem I have with it. I just think it is a pretty mediocre train that wasn't innovated properly. It is the same tech but with some other things, like colors. & don't get me started on the gearboxes...

I don’t know too much about this. But that’s good you bring it up. I heard someone mentioned that they should’ve just made these trains have three doors since they’re so big it would’ve accommodated for more seats. Since the bigger 75 foot cars do not have like 5 doors.

    • @Singthad
