In Australia, one of our popular bug repellents is called "BUG-grrrrr Off" and I don't mind using it. It actually smells really nice. It doesn't have any of the nasties in it. It uses Lemon Eucalyptus oil to keep mosquitoes and a whole heap of other insects away, including ticks.
Don’t forget oleander! Helps keep all sorts of bugs away. In Italy ‘autostrada die fiori’ is a very long highway lines on either side with oleander bushes to keep mosquitoes and other flying bugs off the windshields of cars. Maybe look into it?
Thank you!! Those bugggarz are so so bad this year here in Ontario Canada. Just got mosquito dunks (bti) in the mail this week to make up trap buckets of water to reduce population. Also putting pieces in my rain barrels that I water all my flower planters with. My garlic and marigolds don't seem to be working or maybe because there are just so many. Lots of beautiful dragonfly around taking care of business for sure.
YEA! 🎉 I have ALL these planted except marigolds and lemon balm. I guess it was intuitively a great idea to start an herb garden near my rain barrels. However with my blood type I still use dunks and repellent, but it really makes a difference. Thanks James!👍🏽💕🦋
I wish lemon balm worked, but at least for me, it doesn't. I have a meadow at the rear of my yard where a ton of lemon balm grows as a weed. I can be out there pulling the plants, smelling like Pledge, and yet this is the part of my yard where mosquitoes are the worst. 😢
Hi James! Thanks for showing me the ropes when it comes to mosquitoes. I needed that! I like to draw the birds in to help take care of mosquitoes, because some of them take care of the mosquitoes.
These are all really good tips for keeping mosquitoes away from your planting areas, and anyone with a mosquito problem should definitely follow all these informative instructions. That being said, if you don't have mosquito problems, and have deer / other pest problems, masking the human scent isn't a great idea. I know they sell predator scents like coyote and fox scent to deter a lot of critters in NJ, but masking your human scent is really dependent on your current situation.
Thank you for the great video James, love your content and the Boss :). I wanted to add for all of us who have garden "bosses" of our own that it is very important to make sure any plants we place in a space that our dogs have access to are non-toxic to our furry family members. There are many lists of toxic and non-toxic plants, such as with the ASPCA, but I always like looking up each one I want to add to the garden separately on multiple reliable sites. I keep an excel worksheet with my findings so I can refence past research and not have to memorize or research the same plants again. The most surprising example I found was the one time I didn't research before ordering seeds, and had ordered items to make medicinally helpful supplies. I almost went ahead and planted the seeds, but decided to look the new ones up, and I believe that saved my pups. St John's Wort is a great medicinal plant, but it is not simply toxic to dogs, it's highly toxic...dogs cannot touch the seeds, much less the leaves or ingest even a small amount. I was so surprised that I through the seeds away. A few of the repellent options mentioned in this video can have some level of toxic effects on your dogs and/or cats. Be sure to research each one before adding it to areas your pets can access, especially since some animals are more sensitive or have known allergies they deal with already. Some are only a problem if ingested in larger amounts, but some do not take much to cause your pet a problem. A few common garden plants such as onions are somewhat toxic to dogs, but most dogs have the good sense not to taste them more than one small time, so it's relatively safe. Other dogs are major chewers and cannot be trusted around any potential hazards, so it really pays to know your pet's habits. By all means repel the pests, but be wise and thoughtful in your choices to protect your "Garden Bosses" 🥰. God bless!
❤ I only don’t grow eucalyptus and citranella, but grow all the others. Everyone gets a kick that I don’t have mosquitoes even with a swampy pond/brook part of my property, but I love bits and plants to make my property lovely to hang out in day and night. I even have 3 regular bats every night possibly because I put up bird and bat houses along the property line trees. 😊
@@jamesprigioni thank you so much! He’s a mixed breed, but I’m pretty sure he has Jack Russell in him. He is 6 years old and has lots of personality like Tuck. 😊
🙆🏻♀️🍊thank you for sharing. I have found all of these suggestions helpful. Sometimes science can be biased and limited based on its parameters. Thank you for sharing. You are a gift to gardeners.
James, have you thought about getting a young sister or brother for Tuck? Tuck is getting on now and he needs to train his successor on how to guard the garden. Many of us watch your videos to see Tuck, as he is the boss :)
I was interested in knowing what breed of dog Tuck is. We love terriers and our aged nearly 17 year old Cairn is hanging in there. We got a buddy for him in 2019. We have found that we like having 2 dogs and being senior citizens our Cairns at 25 lbs each are a bit of a heft. The next buddy needs to be a terrier but lighter, no less feisty.
I usually buy two citronella plants each year; however, this year I had propagated some citronella plants and didn’t have to buy any! It was awesome dude. Lol.
Thanks James for sharing this but I didn’t realise mosquitoes came to your side of the hemisphere . Really appreciate it. Lots of love for Tuck ❤❤❤❤🥒🐶.
I would add 3 things. 1. is Lavender, although it can be toxic to your pets. If you have a pot and standing planters. use it there and it stays out of the animals paths. It also works for gnats. 2. If you can withstand it long sleeve shirts. I used to hate them, but I tried it, and if they are around. I don't feel it. 3. As you see James wears blue. A lot of bugs stay off of you if they see you wearing blue. In fact, countries such as Japan, China, and Thailand wear blue when out in the forest and out in their field, and it is not only because you can see blue, it also repels most bugs other than a regular fly.
Hi James, my name is Jordan. I am a visually impaired person from Ireland. That also has autism and I love horticulture. I have recently gained a level four in horticulture and I’m on my way to achieving a level five in horticulture and I’m wondering how to plant the legs of basil, lemongrass and peppermint and especially the likes of vegetables you previously mention like tomatoes, cucumbers and herbs, and I’ve applied the method of removing the top flowers of my tomato plant to get more fruit
You forgot a really good one , Yarrow is very good at repelling mosquitoes can be rubbed on the skin for a natural repellant and grow's VERY easily because it's basically a weed. I couldn't get rid of what is growing wild in my yard if I wanted to...lol PS: please give Tuck a good belly rub for me 🐶
I work at a big box store as a plant waterer. I start before dawn. And the first 3 plants you mentioned are together in the same area along with lavender, basil, and rosemary. And that area has the most misquitoes in the whole department. Not scientific but the welps are all the proof I need that they dont work
Thank you for sharing this important information! I did not know Peppermint repelled mosquitos. Good to know! Thank you for sharing this wonderful information and Tuck! See you in the next one. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜❤🧡💛💚💙💜❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Great video James! I have quite a few of those mentioned and wondered if i can make a water based tea with those and spray us down to keep the mozzies away? Might leave the garlic out though so it doesn't keep the humans away too! lol I got bitten as our temps are rising this week and it's been humid all year but yes typical they bit me on the outer knobbly bit of my elbow of all places! I tend to swell up a bit too so wonder if something like calendula or chamomile would help? I have a lot of herbs and trap crop flowers and also growing more flowers for pollinators. Just touching on homoeopathy more now. I have always just used lavender and rosemary in organza bags in the closets to keep the moths and bugs out but a natural bug repellent spray would be great for sensitive skin. Take care and have a great week

James I just wanted to double check whether those mosquito bits where safe if the dragonflies drank the water or if my chickens got to it? Many Thanks Theresa Australia
You said scented geraniums. Is there such a thing as unscented? I thought all flowers had a scent, or does the plant itself smell even when it's not blooming? I've tried those bracelets before. You would need about a dozen just to protect your arms and legs. Because they only seemed to work for that one area near my wrist. But mine was a different brand than that one. Maybe there are some that are better.
I have a pond. I have dragonflies, bats, basil, peppermint, citronella, rosemary, lavender, sage, lemon balm, and oregano. I use vanilla, cinnamon, Coleman spray, scented wrist bands, etc...and I get eaten alive in 10 seconds. 😒
We collect rainwater to use on our garden and plants. The bees and unfortunately my cat even though he has water. Does bti hurt the bees, cat, or my plants?
You forgot shoo fly. I grow a ton of that to keep bugs out of my garden. I'm not sure how well any plant works on large infestations. There are several of these plants in my raised bed garden. Haven’t had a problem with mosquitoes this year!! Hurray for Mother Nature!!
Which ones? It's funny, there are several people who commented this too!
I'm in Florida, the mosquitoes are horrible here

He’s such a good gardener.
I really like the idea of using rosemary. It is such a pleasant odor and is easy to grow.
I went to a village themed eco resort, they have a circle of lemon grass plants in the centre. And there was significantly less mosquitoes.

I agree with James. I have found any plant with odd scent works. I use dryer sheets. I attach to clothing and rub on my cloths.
Thx James .. yes dunks work .. also peppermint essential oil mixed w water in a spray bottle keeps mosquitoes off ,)
