The wholesomeness of this is that these look like gamers excited to go into the next generation, not like the console scalpers that have rotted the release of new consoles.
In my group we were all super dedicated, we were there because we truly couldn't wait to get our hands on the new machine. Waiting hours in line with other people passionate to share your hobby with you is really a fun, unique social experience. Even for people with social anxiety like myself, lol.
I've said this elsewhere but my own experience of getting the PS2 on release night was a really special experience. I rushed from work to wait 6 hours in line and wound up being something like number 8 out of 12 (I'll never forget the feeling of disappointment we all felt for the first person who was told that he didn't make the cut, as well as everyone behind him, some of whom waited as long as the rest of us). It was a Walmart in Beloit, WI and after those of us who made the cut were informed that we were locked in our names were taken by management and we were allowed to roam the store. We went to the bathroom but then we just came right back to the electronic section where we grabbed some magazines talking about the impending release, excited and relieved that now we knew for a fact that we'd be leaving with the new console. The staff even gave us complimentary cookies and juice and the dozen or so of us bonded by talking about gaming and which titles we were gonna be buying that night. Funnily enough I didn't buy any, I just wanted the DVD player. That changed quickly enough though!
Okay great story but ofcourse it messed me up in the end because why in the hell and what dvd movie did you want to watch so badly you decided not to buy a game with your game console? Lmao, as I said.. It messed me up and now I need to know
@@MilkyHazard Not any specific movie, really. I've just been a fan of films as long as I've been a fan of games so I was really curious to listen to movie commentaries, see deleted scenes and alternate endings, etc. That said, I wasn't very interested in the PS2 launch lineup either. I'd say that my wanting the PS2 for its dvd capabilities was as much about my interest in dvds as my disinterest in the launch games.
I had a very almost identical experience as you did but waiting for the 360 at a Walmart in Naples Florida. Only difference was they made us stand in line in the gardening section of the store then at almost 11:00 p.m. after we had been there for close to 8 hours informed us they had 14 consoles 12 core systems and two premium 360s. But then after that it was like identical to your experience they close to store let us roam around use the bathroom And a midnight they actually brought the consoles to gardening and we had to check out in garden center. I'm great memories from that day
Yeah to me it’s still one of the greatest jumps in gaming from the ps1 to ps2, much improved graphics, built in dvd player, incredible varied games library. Still today it shows what an absolute beast the ps2 was when you play test drive unlimited which is an open world driving game set in pretty much a 1 to 1 recreation of Oahu in Hawaii- there were over 100 different cars to drive and purchase, a first person in car view with every vehicle, a huge detailed map and even the option to purchase multiple houses with garages to store all your vehicles in
I was born in 87, but mostly played n64, ps1 and ps2 games. It was the best era for gaming imo. I still buy the new nintendo consoles and games, but lost interest in playstation once ps3 came out.
A complete 180 to how gaming and gamers are today. This honestly looks like fun and the people there look genuinely happy and look like they’re having a good time. I was only 2 when the ps2 came out.

I'm so jealous of the people that got to experience this when it was new. I was born in 2003, so by the time I was a kid, the PS3 and Xbox 360 were the big players. But me and my friends were all in poorer households. Not like dirt broke. But we were pretty bad. We had a Wii that we won from a competition in 2008. And I was never allowed a console to myself. Until I went Car Boot spelunking with my nana and my sister. And I managed to get a late revision fat PS2 for a whopping £3.50. And another £1 for a controller at the end of the lot. My uncle got his PS2 for Christmas in 2000, and luckily for me, he never threw away any of his bits and kept most of his games too! So I got the 5.1 surround sound speakers, DVD remote, and a good stack of games to add to my collection from my uncle. I was never able to take it home with me since we didn't have space back home. But when I was at my nanas house every Saturday I'd play from morning till teatime. And during the summer, every second Sunday I'd go car boots and get a solid stack of games for like £5-10 every time. Bionicle, Medal of Honour, TOCA, Sonic, all sorts. I've recently got back into playing and collecting for the PS2 and I honestly forgot how fun the games are. Despite the fact that they are noticeably dated today.
