Cirrus Aircraft Maintenance - Changing Our Propeller

  • EP154: See inside a Cirrus SR22 engine with a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (L.A.M.E) as we change the propeller. Learn about the engine, how the Constant Speed Unit (CSU) works, what magnetos do, how the heating and air-conditioning function, and more.
    We're changing from a 4-blade composite to a 3-blade aluminium Hartzell Propeller in preparation for my trip across Australia. I'll be landing at dirt strips and the new propeller is more durable and won't pick up as many chips from stones when at Outback Airports.

    Mark, Paul and Steven at Blue Demon Aviation Moorabbin are great. They have done all the 50 hrly’s and 100 hrly ‘s on our SR22 G5 and have taught us heaps while helping them in the process. Very good hands on experience as a pilot and definitely provides a much deeper understanding of how things work. Another great VID Stefan. I agree with the other comments about a need for good “aviation engineering” content. >>>>> “ Drop your cowls with Stef. “

    I have exactly the same four blade prop on my SR22 - and I would really never go back to the 3-blade. I land on grass strips a lot and I never had a problem in 4 years. The 3-blade might be better on rough gravel strips though. PS: In a conventional Constant sped airplane the blue lever does not control the "pitch" of the blades but the rpm. The pitch is set automatically by the prob.

    If the pitch is controlled by the onboard systems, does any modification to the engine management system need to be done to make the system cater for the change in prop as far as CSU goes?

    • @callsignguardian6364
      @callsignguardian6364 3 роки тому

      Sorry for being 2 years late. As far as my AGK education and experience with FADECs goes, like any normal CSUs, fadec controllers looks for RPM.
      If you look at how CSU works its centripetal forces acting on a governer letting oil in or out to change the pitch to maintain a constant RPM.
      Imagine flying a 182 and without telling you I changed the propeller diameter, you’ll have a different to previous lever position but you still pitch for a same RPM. Same as the FADEC, it’ll also look for the optimal RPM at your selected power setting so nothing really has changed.
      Hope that answers your question!

    Hi Stefan, very interesting. I guess I'm a tech nerd. Anyway... what are the disadvantages of leaving the 3 bladed prop on? Why swap back to the 4-blade prop? I understand that 2-blade props are more efficient but even bigger in diameter. My trike is 3-blade for the reason that a 2 blade would be too big, and a 4-blade is not efficient enough. My understanding too is that more blades means more torque for climb, but less efficient cruise. Thoughts?

      The 4 gives me better climb performance, and is a handy speed brake if you want to slow the SR22 down. It's also a little quieter and smoother yes. But the 3 is more durable, better for some of the dirt strips I'm planning to land on.

      @StefanDrury  5 років тому

      It’s definitely a different sound, we didn’t do a noise level test but the 4 is more “whistly” than the 3. The 4 also sounds a bit more like a turboprop than the 3 in my opinion too.

    • @StefanDrury

      Well spotted Lee. No, the 4-blade didn’t have anti-ice, KJN doesn’t have that option. But Blue Demon are using a new 3-blade with anti-ice so when we put the 4-blade back on, they have the option to put this 3-blade on an aircraft with FIKI capabilities.
