  • Last Dollar Road, Box Canyon Falls & Woods Lake - Ouray, Colorado
    We just spent four days in Colorado. One day 2, we drove Last Dollar Road outside Telluride. Last Dollar Road is a beautiful dirt road that passes through the mountains just outside Tellride. The conditions vary. Some say you can take any vehicle, but there were a couple spots where I would recommend something with clearance and possibly even 4WD. But it's not that bad. In the summer, like when we went, you can see beautiful fields of wild flowers. In the fall, the aspens change color. In the winter...well, you'll probably get stuck in the snow almost immediately.
    From there, we went to Ouray to check out Box Canyon....also called Box Canon. This is not our normal 'hike' as it has a paved parking lot and a visitor center. But I've heard good things, so we checked it out anyway. There is a metal walkway that takes you into the canyon and up to the impressive Box Canyon Falls. You can also take a stairway to the bottom of the canyon or up to the top where a bridge passes over the Uncompagre River (Creek?). This is also part of the Ouray Perimeter Trail, which we unfortunately didn't have time to hike. Still, the Box Canyon and especially the Box Canyon Falls were impressive.
    After that, we headed back to our camp at Woods Lake. We wanted to go on a short hike to Woods Lake, but the weather (and our GPS) didn't agree with that plan, so we ended up driving. All in all, it was a nice, relaxing day with amazing scenery. You don't always have to kill yourself climbing a mountain.

    I love Box Canyon, been there many times over the past forty years. First trips were back when they would sell you food to give to the chipmunks. How times change...
    I stumbled across your channel a while back, while just looking for something I could let run on the other screen while I work. Since then I've watched most of your vids, particularly the Zion videos. Got me wishing I lived closer so I could visit more frequently; my one trip to Zion was a half day that got me wishing for a week or more. Really enjoy your videos, and the honesty with which you address stuff. Good work and cheers. Hope I bump into you some day out there.

    Enjoyed your footage of the wildflowers along Lost Dollar Road and the waterfall at Ouray. We were close to both of those, but didn’t get to them when we were there last week.
    We did make it to Gnar Tacos at Ridgway. Luckily we happened to think of it as we were about a mile away while en route to Crested Butte last Wednesday. Our first time at Gnar and we were very pleased with how good the Pork Belly and Avo tacos were. Hope to eat there again sometime.

    We love Ouray. Box Canyon Falls is definitely not a wilderness experience, but feeling the power of the falls from the end of the catwalk is something I'll never forget.

      Agreed. Not our normal thing with the 'on rails' experience, but so impressive it was worth it. And Ouray is great.

    I was surprised to see that this time MEXICAN FOOD is before hike and I suppose its not a good idea since good food will absorb all your motivation for adventure 😁 The canyon was absolutely amazing...Its worth visit even with crowd......Here in India rains are thrashing us this week and due to heavy rainfall alert I won't be able to hike tomorrow but celebrating my weekend by watching your vlog !!!

    Was up in Ouray in May. Box canyon falls is flowing way harder now! But it was cool because we were able to walk down right under neath the falls and there was no one else there

      Nice! One of these days I want to go up there for a technical canyoneering trip and rappel down some of those falls. (Not Box Canyon though; that looked like it would be a bit much.)

    I'm going to be camping in the San Juan Mountains for 13 nights starting in late August at the start of a road trip that will go on to Utah and northern Arizona. Unfortunately I will be in Colorado between wildflower season and fall color, but I'm sure it will still be beautiful. I wasn't planning to see Box Canyon Falls but your video is making me reconsider.

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Рік тому +1

      Maybe consider Ouray Perimeter Trail. We didn't have time, but I heard good things and it goes right by Box Canyon. My friend Clint was there when we were and he highly recommended hiking the Bridal Veil Falls trail also.

    • @Don-md6wn
      @Don-md6wn Рік тому

      Thanks. I will definitely hike the new (opened in the last 3-4 years) Bridal Veil Falls trail in Telluride. I'm also going to take a crack at the Ice/Island/Fuller Lake hike you and Tina did in a previous video after I get acclimated to the altitude. There are too many great hikes and drives in that area to do them all even in 2 weeks. I will also definitely drive Last Dollar Road.

    A Mexican meal may not be a motivator to go hiking, but nothing beats pollo Jalisco and an iced margarita! LOL!
    Great video! Some day I'll get out to the western United States to enjoy the great outdoors.
    Edit: Totally agree, tacos should be available at any given time, especially at 2:30am when you're stumbling home from am evening out.

    Beautiful place, I am looking forward to visiting this part of CO in early Oct. That said, the most important question...how does Mi Mexico compare to El Patio?

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Рік тому

      El Patio is better. But Mi Mexico hit the spot. I checked out the other Mexican Place in downtown Camp Verde recently and was really impressed with them too.

    Jerry, what's the tent brand & style in the background???

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  Рік тому +1

      That's a super cheap Dark Rest from Walmart. I think it's Ozark Trail brand. They seem to work fine for car camping. We get better ones (Big Agnes) for backpacking. They're more durable and lighter.
