  • Hiking to the Wave in the rain - House Rock Road is treacherous!
    The Wave, just outside Page, Arizona, is an amazing place. It is also extremely limited when it comes to the amount of permits allowed each day. So much so that it requires a lottery. You can play the Wave lottery in two ways; in person and online. It's much more convenient to apply online since you have to be in the Page/Kanab area to do the in person. So if you don't live there, it's a hassle. So most people try the online lottery. Given the demand to go coupled with the limited amount of permits, this makes the Wave lottery extremely difficult to win. Actually, it's by far the hardest permit to get that I've ever come across. But I kept at it. $9/month, almost every month for 5 years. But I won. And when you're playing those types of odds and win, you go.
    Which was a challenge in itself. The hike to the Wave is easy. The drive to the Wave CAN be easy, but if it rains or snows, House Rock Road is notoriously treacherous. It's deep ruts in clay that is extremely slick. People end up getting stuck and being towed out almost every time it receives a decent rain. If you've watched my channel, you know that I don't like off roading. But I had to go.

    Very nice video! Brought back some potent memories for me. I've been there 3 times, beginning around 20 years ago. Back then, (pre-UA-cam, Instagram, smartphones, GPS, etc) it was virtually unknown. As it was designated wilderness, cairns were not allowed (I was given instructions to destroy and scatter any that I found), and rangers were prevented from mentioning it or providing maps, just vague verbal directions if you brought it up to them. It was rare to see anyone else out there, and only about half of people who hiked in trying to find it actually did. One of my trips was in conditions similar to what you just had, and I also took shelter from the rain in that very spot. On my 2nd time out, I (along with 2 other hikers I met at The Wave) got to participate in a long rescue of a family of an elderly but fit father and 2 dehydrated and exhausted twenty-somethings who had barely the strength to get there, and then went the wrong direction on their way back. I'm really glad that you had the mud/rain to add a some adventure, as well as the wonderful color saturation boost that the water provides to the sandstone. Always enjoy following your travels and commentary! Hope to bump into you sometime out there :)

    The colors are even more amazing with the rain. Nice musical accompaniment, Jerry, very evocative of the stunning beauty yiu captured here. No way would I have attempted that muddy road in there. And in the future the dried ruts will also be treacherous.

    I enjoyed this and all your videos! Thanks. I won a March 30-2023 Advanced Permit and didn’t think I could go because of the road. Luckily I found you could book a tour and leave the driving to them! I’m glad I did. We were the first to arrive. It was windy and snowy with some clearing. Epic memories and video!

    We had permits for February 28th and the road was crazy! Luckily, on the way in it was still frozen from the temperatures, but the way out was muck and mud. This was right after several days of snow storms to the area, melt off, rain, and then more snow. When we hiked there wasn’t any precipitation, but it was extremely windy. It took us 30 minutes to make that last stretch down the sand dune and up into the wave because every 30 seconds or so we could watch a gust of wind building and carrying sand with it coming our direction with speeds of at least 20 mph. That sand hurt, so we’d stop dead in our tracks, turn around and hunker down to wait out the wind. Then get up, try to run for 10 or so steps just to do it again.
    Seriously, I actually got blown down the wave while attempting to take a picture it was that crazy. It also means that my company (who are not hikers) chickened out for wanting to explore any of the other features so we headed back right afterward. Still bummed about what I missed out on, but that just means I need to work on finding my way back out there… and this time with my hiking buddies instead of family ;)

    We drove House Rock road on a day like that last March (in our Subaru Outback) -- we did have AT tires on it aired down a bit so I guess that helped, but after some initial trepidation, it was a hoot. We even ubered some people to the Wire Pass trailhead. And when we were done the car was an ungodly mess. We actually drove all the way south to the other end (the south end wasn't quite so bad) and came back through Kanab so we could hit a restaurant...and the car wash. In comparison to the mud pits in House Rock road, the road out to White Pocket (our destination that day) was a piece of cake. I was glad to see your video of House Rock since that's just about what it looked like when we were there, but we didn't get any video. As for the wave -- we haven't even tried. We don't live out there and the chances of a permit are low enough that it seems not worth the trouble of entering the lottery.

    Love watching your video! Hiked the wave myself earlier this year. We had to hire a guide to drive us to the trail and lead us on the hike. We luckily/unluckily encountered a huge snowstorm during the hike, so got to see the wave partially covered with snow, then fully covered 15 mins later. Definitely going back to check out the second wave and melody in the future when I get a chance. Your videos have been a true inspiration. Great quality with good humors.

    Love your videos Jerry! You know, I lived in Page from the mid-70s to mid-80s. At that time, we used to just drive out to The Wave, no lottery, not even a permit required. Of course, it wasn't called The Wave back then either; it was just a cool place to see. Many of the other places you've visited that now require a permit, didn't require one back then. The Narrows only required registering with the ranger station, which has always been the case for any hiking in the backcountry. For an excellent view of Glen Canyon, try Navajo Mountain to Rainbow Bridge along the Weatherill Trail. Best wishes on your next adventure. Cheers

    Nov 9th 2022. When we left Kanab it was a full blown snow storm. When we arrived to the start of the access road it was a mix of rain and snow plus 40 mph winds. The 8.5 mile drive was like driving on a skating ring, a few times we nearly slipped into the trenches next to the rode. The weather when when started the hike was still a mix of rain and snow, below freezing temps and still the 40 mph winds. However, when we arrived at the Wave, the weather made a remarkable change and the clouds started breaking up and we had partial blue skies for the 3 hours we were there. With the very poor weather we counted less than 10 people going to and being at the Wave when we were there. That night back at Kanab, the park rangers said that access for that day had not been advised. Not only were the pictures taken a treasure, the adventure added to the story.

Gaia does not require cell signal and works off satellite.

But what we weren't prepared for was the negative wind chill. We too went out early to beat the crowd, which didn't happen because people stay out there over night and we hit the wave right at sunrise. We didn't stay more than an hour because of the brutal negative winds. It was easily -20 and quite miserable LOL but we endured what we could and then headed out... stating one day we will be back. • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  4 місяці тому +1

      This was March or April, I think. I didn't air down and never have although I've been on this road many times. This was the worst I've ever seen it. If it's not wet, you'll be fine. If it's wet....well, it depends on how adventurous you are. In these conditions, you couldn't get out of the ruts and it was really slick (due to the clay content, I think). I was genuinely terrified, but my Tacoma SR5 never struggled. If it's dry, you'll be fine. If it's really wet....it'll depend on your tires and tolerance for this type of driving. If you're worried when it comes up to the day, maybe look into a guide service. We saw plenty of them coming in when we were there and they didn't seem to mind the roads at all.

    Jerry, question after winning the lottery did they mail you your permits or did you have to pick it up at the BLM.
    I would like to make the trip some day. I have applied a few times and haven't won yet. Just wondering because I would like to start the hiking early in the morning and not have to go to BLM then start hiking.

    The colors were amazing! Consider yourself lucky that you had the opportunity to capture those great shots. Next time you should try to do it in a snow storm. The road wasn’t any better with snow and maybe worse. You go when you get the permit. You guys seem to have great luck with weather. On a side note, how did you drive into Long Dong Silver? The BLM in Hanksville told us we couldn’t drive in and had to go acids private land. Had to hike in from UT-24. Just curious and you can email if you don’t want to post here. You are lucky to be in your fifties. We now decades ahead and still going. It’s that experience that keeps us off of muddy roads. Thanks for sharing, it was a good video!😀😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍

      There were absolutely no signs saying you couldn't drive to it. I've since heard you aren't supposed to cross the wash. There were plenty of signs saying where you couldn't go, so we took that to mean if there weren't signs, it was OK. No private property signs where we were. But plenty of tire tracks and footprints. Not that it's OK just because other people are doing it. Hopefully it wasn't breaking any rules, but I don't know how you'd know otherwise.
