    About 12 years ago I discovered a volunteer in our valley here on Kauai, the fruit get at least double that size and sometimes have two seeds in them. Once it started fruiting, we've only really got fruit once a year, around November. This year was a little sparse as it's been quite dry for most of the year.
    Just one tip; peel cut up and put in a container with lemon juice,shake around so the juice covers the whole fruit because they turn brown otherwise, and chill! It really enhances the taste dramatically. Even if you don't have lemons, just chilling them improves the flavor!
    I agree that this is one of the best tasting fruit in the world!

    Aloha Sean, I really dig your channel bro. Just watched that new one on Abiu… I lived on maui in the nineties but never tried one. I've been to the big island a couple times and actually just moved here 6 days ago and I still haven't tried and Abiu but totally want to now...
    Like you I grew up So-Cal, needed warmer water and cleaner surf, found it all over on Maui. Oahu and Kaua'i too, of course. For me, the big island is about something entirely different, After working in renewable energy for the past 8 years, I realized that the risk in the job was life threatening enough to question whether it was what I really should be doing. I've spent my whole life with a window full of indoor pets most people called plants and I realized perhaps my Dharma lies back in Hawaii, farming in the rain and customizing soil and nutrients for each and every beautiful plant that I grow for my family and friends.
    I'm hand-cutting my way through my new jungle with the scent of wild ginger flowers and wet soil surrounding me. Along with the 17 billion cubic tons of uluhe... So many wild flowers and discoveries that were unexpected but make me giddy at every turn, like the baby uluhe being so purple.
    My plan is to build a small greenhouse for an aquaponics system surrounded by a grid of cement raised garden boxes (3×3, thin-walled, I made a jig) that will get sprayed regularly on only the outside with an all natural hot pepper oil spray to keep out slugs, etc. We're at 2000ft so I'm also about the berries, apples nuts and stone fruits. Sounds like no abiu but perhaps someone will trade me when my peaches and nectarines bear fruit. I just started clearing but I can almost taste them already.
    I felt a strong trade blow through me after explaining my intentions to Madame Pele and apologizing to the forest for the few Ohia that I've had to drop. I think she knows my heart is pure, as is my intent. My lovely bride will be joining me in January as long as friggin' COVID doesn't cause any travel ban between now and then. After that, my adult daughter and 6 month old granddaughter might join us too. I'm not a rich man but with lots of research including the help I've gotten from videos like yours, I'm doing what it takes for as little money as possible at each turn thereby ensuring that my plans and dreams finally come to fruition.
    Mahalo braddah.

    Very excited to try it, Mom and Dad are still in south FLA I'll get them into it. We had avocados (4 different varieties) mangos, lemons, limes, even and orange tree but it didn't have friends so the fruit was never great, but the rest was phenomenal, oh yeah kumquats and lychees, and the red flower with the sweet nectar on the stamen, I forget the name, Abui sounds perfect for Miami, more sweets for the ants, great.

      Thanks. I wish I was fully Self Sufficient, but its ok not to be. It takes a village after all.
      I do not have a formal job. I take care of a landscape, sell some fruit trees and make a small amount from this UA-cam channel and a blog. Main thing is I live frugally. I really only need $400 a month to cover the basics, but we spend close to $1500. Gas, Eating out sometimes, misc stuff. My wife works as a teachers assistant and makes $2k. We save $1k every month.
      The shutdown did not hurt us one bit, but many other folks are struggling.

    Fabulous video! I’m now subscribing. Such an upbeat video. Well done: nice-kind-direct presentation, concise, lovely engaging voice, great information& quite Ono. I’m here in Belize, Central America. Trying hard to design a workable food forest on 70’x70’ with 20’x 30’ wood Belizean stilted house. Love to gift bounty to local neighbors. Have been looking for an Abiu for a while.😔 You are the best inspiration to keep trying. For further information: how long should I baby and shelter before I exposed to “Belizean” full sun? How much space does it need from other trees and is it system surface or deep. As we are close to the equator most things wither if it’s not sheltered “till they catch”. Does it do better with heavy feed (organic compost that I make) on well drain soil? How many Years to 1st fruit, I’m patient & willing to put in effort, on the good stuff,( you should see the rose apples I got after7yrs😋🥰) A Sublime fruit (almost mystic…really, if left to red/purple instead of rose/pink)

    • @HomesteadinHawaii
      @HomesteadinHawaii  Рік тому

      We use to get rose apples here but they all died off from some blight. ABiu like fertile soil and lots of compost and mulch. Mulch heavily and you can keep the ground cooler and moister for longer. After 5 years or so they should fruit. You will be glad you planted one. Good Luck!
