To those saying the drumset is distracting... this is their lot warm-up, not the show. They are using a drumset instead of a metronome to promote a uniform sense of groove and pulse. Makes me wish we did this when I marched Coats in 2007 and 2008. If you want to hear this without the drumset, go to a show. Props to them for awesome quality and clarity this early on in the season! :-D
Chris Garay When you were on the line didn't you wish that you had a set to keep time? Instead of dr. beat and Justin Lewis shouting his dots?
You're right the drum set promotes a sense of groove for the players and im pretty sure many people appreciate that fact but just as listeners it would be distracting from the book. But in my opinion I think the drum set sounds kewl and what they're trying to do is great and I also agree with that it's a distraction but they're not playing for anyone they're just warming up.
Chris Garay i love it. Don't mind the fools.
The drum set made sure that the whole percussion ensemble was in perfect pocket with the drum kit in the show and they ended up with the highest scoring battery of the season, so I love it!
I love almost everything the bluecoats are doing cause they're so innovative and forward thinking. They're changing the game especially in the percussion world starting with hacking/flam jam and now a kit metronome. Wouldn't be surprised to see other lines using a kit in the following years now that almost everyone does the flam jam. I also love the level of synth they use in the show; it really adds to the whole energy and staging of the show. Can't wait to see what they do next.
Bluecoats this year have one of the most solid basslines I've heard in a while.
The Bluecoats kinda have an All-Star drumline thing going on!
This is insane. The drumline is incredibly tight. I love it so much
I remember doing this show many years ago for the Coats. I think we stayed at that same school. It looked amazing inside. Paintings were everywhere.
This line was definitely a classic Bluecoat standout line in their strong history. I put this with the 2008 line as game changers.
Lol the drumbeat makes me feel like this is all just one huge drum jam rather than show music
Mike Wust Exactly! Hopefully everyone see that's the ideal behind it.
smoshman6000 That isn't exactly true. You shouldn't exactly say "no one but you guys" because a lot of people prefer the kit.
Oh so you doubt professional theories and ideas to help their line become what it is?
I don't think you know him personally or you wouldn't say "give rid of it" you would instead support. Also quite stalking me on here you piece of trash. Seriously dude, how many times do you have spit shit out of your mouth to make yourself feel better? It's annoying dude, you're about as bad as that one person named "BDZisdabest" who kept talking shit to everyone. What are you 14 year old?
smoshman6000 Yeah same i like it because it helps bring the feel of the kit in the pit section. so it makes me feel i am also listening to like the pit player helping. Just my opinion. Also don't mind "IamBetter ThanYou" over there. Has to spew shit out of his mouth for the name of his ignorance.
Those snares with EQ rings! 😍
I think that Bluecoats was the corp that used them the most! Well, I have a snare used by the Cavies in 09, but that was their only year using EQ rings! 🤔
Amazing job!
one of my favorites
Love This Line!!!! MONSTERS!!!!!!
This is epic as well as the Bluecoats Akron Lot video.
the end of the feature was sick. i like the drumset in there too
Is the drumset different? Very. Is it distracting? Ehh, maybe a little. Is it unique and beneficial? Hell yes. I like it, it helps you hear the groove. Plus, as a set player, that must be difficult as hell to keep just a simple beat up that long without wanting to jam out a little to the clean beats going on. Props to BC. Really enjoy the writing this year. Those split spock shots at 3:12 made me tingle.
I think the set player has a met in his ear and all it takes is focus. Yea their book is really amazing it's the best book I heard this year unless you can name a group with a more entertaining book. But all drum corps books are good.
No. to all. I've said it before and I'm glad it's finally gone. The drumset TAKES AWAY from the corps altogether. SUPER glad it's gone.
The drum set was because DCI had prohibited loudspeaker metronomes (e.g. Dr. Beat/LongRanger) from warmup lots. Roger’s solution was to put the met in his ear and drum.
@@petertaydus6330 someone’s mad they suck at kit lol
@@petertaydus6330 I absolutely love the kit and how it compliments the groove of the drumline parts.
I personally like the set it grooves the book as you practice. also kudos to the set cause it takes a ton of focus to keep it tight
The Bluecoats consistently have the best Bassline in all of DCI. Not to mention the most "In-your-face" and groove-like book with plenty of metric modulation/time signature changes. I want to be a Bluecoat so bad, that it hurts.
smoshman6000 I'd have to disagree with Cadets...either Bloo or SCV
Actually I take it back and say Scouts. If you don't understand me watch the learn the bass video Vic Firth posted
Ramenstin312 Cadets have the best bassline. They have a really strong history and I guess that gives them a strong bond, because their timing is consistently spot-on. Their quality of sound is also unmatched.
Now why would anyone want to leave the bluecoats when their book is this great? (Hmm two blue devils snares who shall not be mentioned)
2014 was a VERY veteran line, IMO the best line during the Roger Carter era. 2015 had one returning vet, the 2 that went to BD saw the writing on the wall. Still, just imagine Evan Espanto and Devon Koning on the same line. That would've been the most intense pair EVER.
they were both on bluecoats line in 2014
Evan was, Devon wasn't.
Devons the dude right next to mike and aaron correct?
He's the guy to the left of Mike.
we're listening
ive always liked the technique of the guy whose center snare this year. what a good year to be center, too.
Casey Ancona I like the Asian guy next to him better, Mike Davis seems to go beyond vertical with his shots or something. It just looks really off
You're both wrong. Devon Koning all the way (the guy to the left of center who has more intensity than all of them combined). We marched together in High school. He's the best snare player I've ever known.
They must have just added the set during show beats, I saw their lot at DCI MN when I was performing there and they didn't use the met for show beats, just warm ups.
come on guys, don't hate the kit. it's proof roger is a genius.
Echoes off of the building sounded perfect.
Anyone know what the port vent switch on the drum does and how it changes the sound?
NICE!!!!
camera quality is superb
Baddest drumline on the planet!
4:27 THE FAKE THO
What are the snares doing around 3:25 to get that sandpapery sound?
Is this the center snare's ageout year?
when it comes to composition, these guys have it down.
why do so many guys make the transition from Coats to Blue Devils?
groovvyyy
the boys seemed to enjoy how the set keeps the time....
I showed this to my friend who has never seen drum corps. She thought he was just some random guy that set up his kit and started playing along with them. BYOSet???
What type of camera is being used? I actually didn't mind the drumset.. what would be the difference if it was the met?
Does anyone know what that sound is at 3:30 where they swipe their neighbor's drum?
those are switches for the acoustic vents (located in the rims) their custom snares are equipped with.
What sticks do the snares use
yas,
What's with switches on the side of the snares? Haven't been able to figure that one out.
It lets air flow through it to give a different sound
Look up Yamaha Acoustic Eq. It's for the top head, if you listen closely when they open the vents, you can hear the top head pretty well because it gives off a deeper sound if you listen hard enough.
Definitely sounds more challenging then there 2014 feature, if someone can transcribe this that would be great
Stormbreaker entire book is on snarescience.
The 2015 book? I don't see it
Look through the back couple of pages on the forum, the front page is rarely updated.
Page 244, make sure you take the final version of the opener, and the closer is on the same page as well. A few things changed after the music was transcribed, but they're all pretty minor.
This is f***ing crazy. #cleanbeats #blooclean
I'd personally like to hear this without a drum set.
WHEN YOURE LOST IN THE DARK LOOK FOR THE LIGHT
Jacob Vaughn The set comes from concerns DCI has been having about people coming back and suing corps after hearing loss from the mets. It's happening, its a real concern now, and people are stupid.
+Jacob Vaughn me too, but I dig it with the kit. Makes it seem more tribal, or something...meh, maybe not tribal, but it's a cool jam. But, I agree, would like to hear sans kit. Although, I bet when they do...do it live, they'll have that drum beat in the back of their head? Maybe not a bad technique?
+smoshman6000
The thing is though, the set really has never been used. And so, you can imagine them "racing" around the field to THEIR music with the met, not music that is being set by another instrument. All a complete matter of opinions.
What kind of camera is this? I like the quality
Yesssss 3:10 to 3:17
What did you film this with?
The drum set kills me
They changed some parts.
Jesus Christ I love roger carter
What camera do you use?
Quoi? Pourquoi quand je pratique dans mon char, ça sonne pas comme ça? Ça doit être mon volant qui est mal accordé.
What happened to the metronome on the long ranger or the cowbell or wood block? Hellza cheaper and doesn't drown out the sound of the line. sounded great otherwise
WHY NO ARJUN?!
You can really tell the time does not fluctuate at all with the set; I'm sure that's great for the line, but idk it really drowns some stuff out. Would like to see it just be used on the warmups, but its whatever, Coats do Coats ;)
Ziosaoh It's about the line, not the viewers, for warmups, though. The drumset helps the line, and I'm sure the listening quality of us for their warmups isn't their greatest concern. If he's willing to carry that set to every warmup, I'm sure it's worth it.
Chris Talbot Yeah that's kind of my point.
Ziosaoh Ye, I misread it a bit. Still, though.
Most high def drumline video on UA-cam lol
What is the point of this drum kit?
I really like the drumset during warm ups but I think in the music reps its just awkward...
HELLO, HOW ARE YOU
WHAT TECHNIQUE USES TO STORE SO MANY NOTES?
THERE IS A SPECIFIC TECHNIQUE OR PRACTICE. thank you so much.
This book is resident sleeper
Did they split the duts at 6:00?
+DarthYutsi The top of the closer is written in 11/16. Roger kept straight quarter notes on the high hat, putting every other 11/16 bar on the upbeat. We dutted quarter note downbeats that came across as upbeats because that bar started on upbeats relative to the high hat... hope that makes sense!
What were the tempos for each part of the show? (If me knowing that doesn't break any rule or something).
3:22
I get that concept, it makes perfect sense for warming up but they aren't performing with that kit groove playing so rehearsing with it seems counter productive, I may be wrong but that's just my opinion
Max Drummer You practice with it enough, you'll hear it even when it's not playing
Isn't that the same with a metronome?
WorldLiberator Exactly my point
nice, at lower volumes don't let the synchronizations get blurry
someone explain the drum set
Dan Barnes They're experimenting with the use of a drum set instead of a met+speaker. It's really sweet so far.
uasuka I applaud you
I was fortunate enough to have Roger Carter come out and work with my school. Drum set is a central teaching mechanism at the Bluecoats. Both in time keeping and overall fluidity while playing. Carter has gone far enough to, obviously, have a drumset right in front of the drumline.
uasuka really i had no idea
Dan Barnes I'm glad you know now. We're all here for you:)
Yes. dream.immortal.subdivision union
4:30 WE EAT SOUP!!!
???
WE BLEED BLOOOOOOO
this is the scene of probably 1 of the biggest high school fights ever
Rip Kyle 2:09
wait so cadets are winning why?
Simple music?
larry fish The Cadets win because their line just rams notes and apparently that's more impressive than the musicality of the Bluecoats line.
Willie Burke SCV has the best musicality hands down, but I think Cadets have the cleanest rolls and accents.
People complaining about the drumset, atleast theres not a fucking crowd that doesnt understand the point of turn arounds.
lil asian be looking like glenn
3:05 tenor fail
What camera do you use?
