Hi, everyone! A lot has changed since this video came out. You may have heard that Fire in the Hole is being retired at the end of the 2023 season. Also, Silver Dollar City just announced the coaster is being completely rebuilt and will be reintroduced spring 2024. Learn more here: ua-cam.com/video/Z0j_y127DnU/v-deo.html Also, Miguel the Annual Passholder is now Theme Parks Uncovered. Check out his channel here: www.youtube.com/@ThemeParksUncovered
I was one of the first ones to ride it back in 72. I was one of the last ones to ride it in 23. I was in the second to last train. Not counting the special train after the Park closed. What was neat was there's a little boy 7 years old riding it for the first and last time on the last public train. Lee rode the fire hall five times that day. On the third time there's a man that was in his sixties and it was the first time he was riding the ride. It was almost a pilgrimage for us to be there on the last day. I did not 🚫 enter the contest beyond the last train after hours. The perks of doing social media I presume. I had forgotten about the apparent broken track. Thanks for reminding me that was a fun part of the ride at one time. It was stopped a couple of times so the stories could be told at the different scenes. They cut that out a long time ago and sped up the cars so that they could put more people through. I would say the second time I wrote it on the last day it was the fastest ride it was like the thing was turbocharged. Let's not forget the 20 something year old man who was essentially decapitated on the ride years ago..
I live in Missouri and Silver Dollar City has been one of my favorite places since I was young. Fire in the Hole is one of my favorite rides at the park, But I didn’t know all this history about it. Great Video!
I live in Branson too and Silver Dollar City was a must until just recently. I even got to play my dulcimer there with Jack and Dave. Those were good days.
The whole ride is actually a pretty insane experience. It really does start from the time you walk in till the time you leave the car. The old hillbilly Missouri vibe is really brought out with the the theme, story line, and animations. Also yes very dark and kinda creepy as you mention. There was also the Lost Mine which was basically a water ride shoot-em-up version of this, with similar animations and overall vibe.
This is my favorite attraction at Silver Dollar City. As someone who has been on the ride multiple times, I did not know a lot of the interesting facts you mentioned in the video. This gave me a whole new appreciation for the ride and its deep history. Great video!
I've been to Silver Dollar City many times and rode Fire in the Hole every single time! The new coasters like Powder Keg and Wildfire, but Fire in the Hole never seems to get old because of the interesting story it tells, and even if a couple of the special effects are a bit hokey nowadays, it's always a fun ride and comes highly recommended!
During my first visit to Silver Dollar City as a kid, my mom told me the story of how her father played a trick on her when she was a kid herself by telling her Fire in the Hole was a calm ride about the history of firefighting of that time period, then taking her on the ride and playing dumb when it turned out to… not be that. She told me this story after playing the same trick on me.
You know what you have to do now, right? Keep the tradition going next time you’re there with a kid! That is, if they rebuild the ride after this season
Thanks for watching! Make sure to head over to Miguel the Annual Passholder's channel on Saturday to watch his video on Fire in the Hole's sibling attraction! You can find the link to his channel in the description 😁
@6:00 How old is the ride video here? I noticed it still uses the original voice at the end. The new "Fiiiiire in the Hoooolllleee!" voice the ride has now just doesn't have the same effect. Its good to hear the original one here again.
FIRE IN THE HOLE! My all time favorite coaster. Was the first ever coaster I ever rode as a kid. I was hooked on Fire in the Hole and also Thunderation. Silver Dollar City is my old world escape from this new world were living in. Been going since '94
I am so grateful to hear about this absolutely amazing looking set of dark ride/coaster hybrids! Can't believe I haven't yet heard of either, which is great because I imagine there are even more historical and/or unique dark rides for me to discover out there still. Thank you, and your channel in general is great!
Great video! I recently had the joy of visiting Silver Dollar City for the first time and getting to ride this historic ride in its last season. (And you know I had to pick up some “last ride” gear!) Looking forward to seeing what they do with the new attraction!
My great uncle Allen Schaefer was one of the people that helped design the OG Fire in the Hole. As well as a lot of the other rides at SDC and the slides at White Water. His brother, my other great uncle Lou Schaefer was the Mayor of Branson from 95-07 and oversaw a massive expansion of Branson into the tourist mecca it is today. Super proud of both of them and our Branson heritage. My family just got back from a trip to Branson, and we all rode the new Fire in the Hole for the first time since the remake. It's a perfect nod to the old one with just the right amount of modernization to take it to the future.
I’ve been on this ride many times in my childhood and I’ve always been kinda scared if it and now reading about it. On July 9, 1980, 23-year-old James Frederick Polley was one of several passengers riding a train on Fire in the Hole, which was mistakenly thought to be empty. The train was switched from the main tracks onto a maintenance track heading towards a storage area with a low hanging door. Maintenance workers shouted at the passengers to duck. Polley failed to react and smashed his head on the door. The accident was ruled a case of human error and the ride re-opened two days later.
I decided not to include that incident in the video. But that’s such an eerie accident that’s heartbreaking. Still interesting to hear how so many generations have connections to the ride.
I was one of the first ones to ride it back in 72. I was one of the last ones to ride it in 23. I was in the second to last train. Not counting the special train after the Park closed. I love hearing stories like this! I'm glad you got to experience the original one final time on such a special day, especially with such a long history with the ride. Now we wait for 2.0!
@@StorybookAmusement I'll be honest I will be a hard sell on the replacement ride. I'm glad that you enjoyed the story. Maybe other people will too. Hey you know they've got a 5-year plan to level the original fire in the hole. That's a pretty high source that I got that from. And that source went on to say well they say they don't have any plans for next 5 years for that location which just means they're not saying with that plan is. That source also figures that they'll build something there quicker than the 5 years and the place will be erased quicker than 5 years. Now see that source told me what that person knew. You can't blame management and family for keeping it really close to the vest. I'm not saying if that source is male or female because it would be too easy for somebody to track down the source. I am grateful that we were able to make it there on the last day especially and ride that ride a few more times. Supposed history know it's real history. But it'll be interesting how they change the baldnobbers appearances. Thank you for doing your original episode.
The baldknobber pouring water was removed?? I remember it being a part of the ride, I swear! I was just thinking about it when I first clicked on the video. When did they remove it?
I should have been more clear in the video. That character has been relocated since the ride opened. It's still there, just not in its original spot. 😊 I mentioned it with the "removed and relocated" scenes, but didn't clarify which ones were removed and which ones were relocated.
Prior to the rebuild in SDC, the rides in both parks were nearly identical (However, in Dollywood it’s called “Blazing Fury”). So if you want to ride the original, you can still do that in Dollywood.
So excited to see the announcement of a new Fire In the Hole ride. I was so angry after they announced they were shutting the old version down at the end of 2023 and was just bitter. I really thought they were going the Disney route in getting rid of all the cool stuff we loved growing up with. I think this is going to be an excellent compromise!!
They've definitely had something up their sleeve! SDC seems to be under some wonderful direction, and it's great to see how the park continues to improve every year.
Can't fathom why they're closing it this year. It seems like such a unique ride to draw in people. Surely they wouldn't have had to close such an experience.... I've been on the Dolly Wood one in the past but hoping to make it to SDC this year to experience it before it's gone forever.
Due to age the original Fire in the Hole is being replace in 2023 by a RMC Fire in the Hole which will be located at the Fireman's Landing area of the park.
Fire in the hole is such a traditional part of silver dollar city. I hate hearing talks that they are going to rebuild it somewhere else in the park. They’re trying to get too modern. The whole idea of the park is to step back in time. Getting rid of the original fire in the hole will just be a tragedy if it happens.
Exactly. My grandparents had their honeymoon at silver dollar city in 1973. Looking back at all the pics they have it looks so authentic. Nothing like it is now. They used to have random gunfights, able to shoot real 50 cal muskets and would shoot cannons. Nothing like that anymore
Still upset? It looks like the new track will re-use much of the original set designs, just with a better functioning ride and showbuilding, that’s the kind of update you should be happy about!
@@himynameiscoreyI'm local to the area and know a bunch of people working on the new update, it honestly looks and sounds great from what I've been shown. Safer and smoother track with all the old charm preserved.
I got to ride this in 2023 just before it closed. It was a fun expereince but it was quite rough for it's speed, you can feel the "bumps" as it rattles around it's rickedy track. It's been replaced now and will open in a few months as "The New" Fire In The Hole".
Sadly SDC announced a week or two ago that this will be the last season for Fire in the Hole. Going to try and make it down sometime this year to get some last rides in on it.
I was there the year and day that it malfunctioned and went onto a service track killing a passenger tragically. My older brother was in the next set of cars behind it when it happened. In the late 70's i believe.
When I was a kid, this ride freaked me out but not do to any content. My cousing told me that during the ride's early years, human error sent a loaded train into a service tunnel with very low overhangs and a passanger either stood up or was rather tall and slammed there head into an overhang.
I've heard about this ride, but any mention of it that I've always come across seems to get glossed over. I had no idea it was such an immersive, story-driven ride! Now I just want to visit SDC event more.
So is this a slower moving ride like pirates of the carribean at Disney parks? I think it is cuz one needs to look at all the stuff. Or is it fast moving like Space mountain? We are going in July to Silver Dollar City but I will not be going on fast moving roller coasters. My heart health does not allow me to get on those types.
It’s closer to the feeling of Spaceship Earth, but a bit brisker. Probably about 90% of the ride is like that. The other ~10% is similar to Space Mountain with small drops in the dark. This part is like a roller coaster: sudden and fast. I hope this helps. Enjoy your trip!
I rode Fire in the Hole the first time in 1982 with my daddy. I rode it in 2022 with him and he told me his frail body would no longer allow him to ride it. We hadnt learned of his cancer yet. He died in February of this year. It was in fact the last time he rode it.
2021 Original comment: I hope this ride is around for many years to come. It would be nice to see it get some upgrades it really deserves it. 2023 EDIT: Yes I know it's closing at the end of 2023. I also already know they're building Fire In The Hole 2.0 in the back of the park by Firemen's landing.
@@RaccoonRitz Yeah I think it's probably likely. Screamscape has rumors about it now, and they're clearing land back behind firemans landing. If they do move it I hope it's relatively the same, but it would be awesome if they could put the scenes that were cut back in.
@@Wilhelm1407Coasters yeah and hopefully newer animatronics, I like the still figures don’t get me wrong, but holy hell they creep me out at the same time lol.
Yeah they say it on the train as you pass by the building it is the new fire in the hole! But I hope they don’t make it more extreme than it is right now just for a calm family ride
The Grand Finale Of Fire In The Hole Calling all riders, park fans and fanatics and Fire In The Hole aficionados...THE WORLD’S MOST HISTORIC INDOOR ROLLER COASTER will take its final rides through the iconic burning town of Marmaros during the 2023 season. It’s your last chance to squeal in delight as you plummet through the darkness and scream “FIRE-IN-THE-HOLE!”
I've been riding that since I was a small boy. I've been gone for many years, but when the family and I return to visit from California we love to go to Branson, and Silver dollar city. My kids love as I do. It's been 2 years since we've visited but plan to this June, 2023. I understand after all of these years it is scheduled to be demolished. So this will be our last time to ride it. It is sad. Here in California everything has gone a different direction and takes away from the stories, and less exciting. It is refreshing to visit places like this to get away from the nonsense we have here.
Very similar! The track and key effects were nearly identical. The story was a bit different. Fire In The Hole, however, was completely rebuilt last year. It's more modern now. The version in this video is now defunct.
It needs to go. It's at it's end of life. The building and ride are in poor shape. Rumor is however, that a new version of Fire in the Hole is being built to debut in 2024.
@@justinzeid212 But how do rides that are over double its age still operate? Also, if they don’t keep the Bald Knobber theming on the new one, it’ll be the biggest slap in the face to millions of fans.
I feel like no one really talks about the famous fatality that happened on this ride, as a local that's the first thing anyone in the Ozarks talks about when you mention fire in the hole.
I intentionally didn't mention it since it can easily be sensationalized on a platform like this. I appreciate when it's brought up, though, as it's incredibly sad. I'm looking forward to the ride's brighter future.
I’m still missing Tom Sawyer’s Landing…. Perhaps the most dangerous and most fun ‘playground’ in history. The remnants are still there including the bridge but most of it is gone.
@@StorybookAmusement The rumor is that they're building a new one in fireman's landing on the other side of the park. There is a giant metal frame over in that area that they just built that looks large enough to house a new version. It's rumored that the current building is in such a state that it's not going to last for much longer and that repair is impossible too expensive. Some people say they're moving the ride others say it's going to be all new.
What about the dude that got decapitated when it went onto a service track and he hit his head on a low ceiling? It happened in the late 70’s and is the only causality at sdc.
Yes, I’m aware of the incident. I chose not to include it out of respect, especially since it’s not really critical to the story. Not too interested in sensationalizing it. Thanks for watching.
That’s too bad! The Bald Knobbers had zero to do with the KKK, and were definitely NOT racially-motivated. In fact, they’re what gave rise to the idea of masked vigilantes and villains that gave comic books their start.
@@StorybookAmusement I loved fire in the hole. It is/was a great ride. I will always miss the restraints immediately going down in the station and after putting away your loose articles you have to pull up the restraint that just fell down
When you are a small park you don't fk with nostalgia. People go for nostalgia. Even thiugh we are getting a better ride it won't be the same. This will ruin the ride for the generation who grew up with this ride. Dumb decision. Should have just retracked it.
I personally speculate the Fire in the Hole building had to be shut down. The track has been in good condition as far as I’m aware. Everything I’ve seen about the new build, SDC is doing it right. They realize how impactful this ride is and are know it’s beloved. Time will tell how it comes out.

That’s a perfect way to put it: taking a step back in time. Love this.
Safer and smoother track with all the old charm preserved.
they announced the new one a few months ago, and it looks to be the same ride with a few adjustments and stuff
I got to ride this in 2023 just before it closed. It was a fun expereince but it was quite rough for it's speed, you can feel the "bumps" as it rattles around it's rickedy track. It's been replaced now and will open in a few months as "The New" Fire In The Hole".
I'm looking forward to the new version!
Sadly SDC announced a week or two ago that this will be the last season for Fire in the Hole. Going to try and make it down sometime this year to get some last rides in on it.
Same here! I need to make a trip happen.
Love the vintage footage.
Jen xo
Love these classic ‘70s rides!
This is the only roller coaster I would ride in the world.
Love it !
I get that! Blazing Fury at Dollywood is the only coaster I’ve been on with my mom in recent years. Means a lot to me!
Glad this video exists! I'm not going to get there for its final season :(
Ah bummer! I'm trying to make my first visit, to be honest.
“Many years ahead” huh?
Who else is here after they announced the closure of Fire in the Hole?
One or two people have popped in 😅
I was there the year and day that it malfunctioned and went onto a service track killing a passenger tragically. My older brother was in the next set of cars behind it when it happened. In the late 70's i believe.
July 9,1980
Wow, that’s interesting. I intentionally left that bit out because I don’t like sensationalizing tragedies like that. Must’ve been quite memorable.
@@StorybookAmusement it was. My mom was in a bad panic until my brother walked out.
Felt so bad for the mans family and loss.
When I was a kid, this ride freaked me out but not do to any content. My cousing told me that during the ride's early years, human error sent a loaded train into a service tunnel with very low overhangs and a passanger either stood up or was rather tall and slammed there head into an overhang.
Yes, that incident was tragic. I didn't want to sensationalize it in the video, hence why is wasn't included, but it's so sad to hear about.
I've heard about this ride, but any mention of it that I've always come across seems to get glossed over. I had no idea it was such an immersive, story-driven ride! Now I just want to visit SDC event more.
I’ve definitely had SDC on the mind for months now 😩
Many thanks, I didn’t know about this coaster or it’s history but it looks great fun.
Many thanks right back at ya! 😁
I rode Fire in the Hole literally two days ago and I saw the dude with the barrel, did they add him back in?
The one above the ride? It was relocated, not removed. I should’ve stated that a little clearer in the video. Good catch though!
Found out about this channel from my friend Miguel! Great work! 😃
Thanks for dropping in! Miguel’s the man!
Some of my best childhood memories is on Fire in the Hole! ❤️
That’s great to hear! I love when people share their memories about the ride
I rode Fire in the Hole the first time in 1982 with my daddy. I rode it in 2022 with him and he told me his frail body would no longer allow him to ride it. We hadnt learned of his cancer yet. He died in February of this year. It was in fact the last time he rode it.
Oh I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you still have those memories 💜
i rode this for the first time in a while since its closing this year and they dont have the man saying fire in the hole anymore 😭😭
Oh nooooo!
I legit had no idea this coaster existed. I need to get out more /: Great watch btw!
Thanks! I only heard about it a few years ago after I started going to Dollywood, so no shame!
2021 Original comment:
I hope this ride is around for many years to come. It would be nice to see it get some upgrades it really deserves it.
2023 EDIT: Yes I know it's closing at the end of 2023. I also already know they're building Fire In The Hole 2.0 in the back of the park by Firemen's landing.
Some TLC would be nice while keeping the classic charm 😁
If I heard correctly it may be moved and updated maybe around 2023-24, I could be wrong but it’s just a rumor I heard there when I was on my honeymoon
SDC just announced that this upcoming season (2023) will be the Season Finale for Fire in the Hole...
I know! A historic finale for this great ride.
I never knew fire in the hole was so old.
It’s a classic!
Neither did I and silver dollar is one of my fav theme parks. I’m so happy I found this video

The Grand Finale Of Fire In The Hole
Calling all riders, park fans and fanatics and Fire In The Hole aficionados...THE WORLD’S MOST HISTORIC INDOOR ROLLER COASTER will take its final rides through the iconic burning town of Marmaros during the 2023 season. It’s your last chance to squeal in delight as you plummet through the darkness and scream “FIRE-IN-THE-HOLE!”
Hey! So, apparently on the mural in the hospitality house, it says that the town that silver dollar city sits on was burned to the ground!
Ooh that’s cool. So was it Marmaros?
@@StorybookAmusement dunno, could be!
@@StorybookAmusement another thing on the mural is a wagon getter ran over by a train!
That’s cool! Thanks for sharing 😁
@@StorybookAmusementBald Knobber/Ozark historian here: Yes, Marmaros became Silver Dollar City after being burned down by the Bald Knobbers.
INCREDIBLE
Gotta love the classics 😁 thanks for checking it out!
Nice story
Thanks for watching!
Is this the same as blazing fury at Dollywood
Very similar! The track and key effects were nearly identical. The story was a bit different. Fire In The Hole, however, was completely rebuilt last year. It's more modern now. The version in this video is now defunct.
Just went for last final month ❤❤❤❤❤❤ it was so different
I hope you enjoyed!
@@StorybookAmusement beyond enjoyable then all the other times it just felt different but sad to see thunderation go down again
Did you hear the announcement today about this ride? 😭😭
Yes 😭 but there must be exciting plans for the future!
Unfortunately this is the last year for this ride. SDC has decided to replace it with new additions.
There's a rumor that the ride will be rebuilt, so there's that!
An absolute Icon!!! How can they tear it down?! Someone please start a Godfundme to save it!
I think their GoFundMe is called "ticket sales" in this case 😅
It needs to go. It's at it's end of life. The building and ride are in poor shape. Rumor is however, that a new version of Fire in the Hole is being built to debut in 2024.
@@justinzeid212
But how do rides that are over double its age still operate?
Also, if they don’t keep the Bald Knobber theming on the new one, it’ll be the biggest slap in the face to millions of fans.
Wait these two are considered coasters? Sweet I just got 2 more creds! I've never counted them before.
They have gravity sections, so I say they count! No different less qualified than a kiddie coaster.
It’s sad now that this year is gonna be fire in the holes last year
RIP to a legend!
That right
I’m still missing Tom Sawyer’s Landing…. Perhaps the most dangerous and most fun ‘playground’ in history.
The remnants are still there including the bridge but most of it is gone.
FIRE IN THE HOLE 🔥🔥🔥👉👉👉🕳️🕳️🕳️👈👈👈🔥🔥🔥
Best part of the ride 6:02
Edit 6:01
Yesss. If you don't yell it during the drop, did you actually ride?
Yes I been on it before
I love silver dollar city and my favorite ride is fire in the hole
It’s a unique one! Thanks for watching 😊
The baldknobbers must’ve been scary
Where they like the first terrorists?
7:00 - This line didn't age well.
Weeeellll, this video was posted two years ago, so that's technically *multiple* years! 😅
I love history
Thanks for watching!
Its all fun and games until you work there for a summer and get to experience the moving mannaquins...
😳 I'm terrified and intrigued
There's talk about it being demolished.
Really? What's the going rumor for a replacement?
@@StorybookAmusement The rumor is that they're building a new one in fireman's landing on the other side of the park. There is a giant metal frame over in that area that they just built that looks large enough to house a new version. It's rumored that the current building is in such a state that it's not going to last for much longer and that repair is impossible too expensive. Some people say they're moving the ride others say it's going to be all new.
This is the last year for Fire in the Hole.
Indeed! For now…
Fun fact before the first drop if you look left you can see a man in the wall
😱
They’re taking it down 😭😭💔
RIP!
I know you’re getting a lot of comments on this but this looks like quite the ride :D rip tho.
I always love hearing from everyone! And rip rip
FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!
🔥🔥🔥
What about the dude that got decapitated when it went onto a service track and he hit his head on a low ceiling? It happened in the late 70’s and is the only causality at sdc.
Yes, I’m aware of the incident. I chose not to include it out of respect, especially since it’s not really critical to the story. Not too interested in sensationalizing it. Thanks for watching.
I’ve been told this for YEARS!!! I thought my family was just trying to scare me! I never heard anything else about it so I forgot until now!
Im sad that he didn't include the sign that said "ATTENTION BALDKNOBERS you have been invited to a neck tie party!"
😬 Sorry!
Rip fire in the hole. 1973-2023
my mom used to go there as a little little kid, she thought this ride was based of the KKK
That’s too bad! The Bald Knobbers had zero to do with the KKK, and were definitely NOT racially-motivated. In fact, they’re what gave rise to the idea of masked vigilantes and villains that gave comic books their start.
I rode fire in the hole
That’s awesome!
@@StorybookAmusement yeah its a real sight to see
It's not an urban legend, the town did exist and was burned down. Silver Dollar City is built on the site
Thank you for this info
7:04 this aged poorly
It aged horribly I’m afraid 🫢
@@StorybookAmusement I loved fire in the hole. It is/was a great ride. I will always miss the restraints immediately going down in the station and after putting away your loose articles you have to pull up the restraint that just fell down
Bye bye fire in the hole
✌🏻
As others mentioned the final season will be 2023 with a new ride replacing it in 2024.
I rode the old one And it just sucks Then I rode the new one and it was amazing
SDC did the ride justice!
Lobotomy dash
FIRE IN THE HOLE 🟢
But actually growing up I loved this ride and asked my late dad to ride it with me whenever we went
Ahh I love hearing memories like that
When you are a small park you don't fk with nostalgia.
