    I've driven and walked there. Was a hairy drive even without snow/ice. Didn't realise that was a ham repeater there. Stunning views! Bit eery with almost nobody in the village up there.

    Mt Mitchell NC 6,684 feet ... highest peak east of the Mississippi River USA.
    Years ago I knew the ham who was a NC State Police radio technician charge with keeping the NCHP Mt Mitchell repeater "on the air." The ground plane antenna consisted of 5 (five) mobile whips with springs bolted to a pipe at the peak. It was the only antenna that could stand the Winter ice storm coatings of up to 18 inches thickness. :^)

    I service some pretty remote repeater sites at the end of some pretty treacherous mountain roads but that site is off the hook.

    I know for HF height is a bit of a myth. For tidy VHF & UHF I am sure it is very critical.
    Keep up the great work mate.

    Hi Hayden, nice work. I used to know the ABC-TV Tx OIC many decades!!! ago. Can't remember his call. Are any of the repeaters accessable from Coles Bay. I get down there a couple of times a year? VK3YF

      VK7REC on 146.900 MHz is accessible from Coles Bay. 123 Hz tone... 141.3 Hz tone used to link back to Hobart and Launceston

    I'd guess that the solar panels face north and the moss grows on every side of the repeater shack?
    Is there adequate solar throughtout the year?

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  Місяць тому

      No moss, too high and cold. Usually in winter the batteries get a bit low due to poor weather and snow covering the panels

    I the United States we need auto tuning HF mobile antennas like Barrett and Codan. Neither of which can interface with anything other than their own brand of transceivers.

    Who in the world decided to put a repeater that you needed to walk 2 miles to get to? Were you guys walking on a road that you could of used for part of that. Usually when a nice set of cans need to be tuned and I turn the knob, I get a dirty look and am told to be gentle. Your cans don't seem to talk back.

    • @russturner3454

      Not all mountain tops warrant a road when they are infrequently visited. Cost.

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  3 місяці тому +1

      We started for about maybe 100m on a road... and then it turns into road scrambling..
      When there is enough snow a ski-do would make it up the top - I think that's how the last batteries got there. This repeater is right on top of the peak of the mountain. The rest of the mountain has plateau's and valleys - so the coverage isn't good down in one of them.
