This is how you replace your 3.0T Supercharger Intercooler Cores

- While I had the Supercharger off of the car during my PCV swap I decided to inspect my intercooler cores in hopes that cleaning them would fix my IAT issue. In this video I show you how to remove your Throttle Body, as well as your Intercooler cores. Then I show you how to clean the intercooler cores to get them looking like they are new, and then I'll show you how to put everything back together.
Before someone says anything, I know Simple Green can be corrosive to Aluminum, but that is only if you leave it in Simple Green for a very extended amount of time. 12-24 hours isn't going to hurt anything.
Unfortunately, cleaning the IC Cores didn't completely fix my IAT issue, but it definitely helped bring them down about 7-10 degrees, so that is still a win in my book.
Special Tools Needed:
-Extended Torx Bit Set: amzn.to/3x8jsi1
Parts Needed:
-Throttle Body Gasket, (x2), 06E145272C
-Supercharger Intercooler Gasket, (x2), 06E145723E
-Coolant Crossover Pipe Gasket, (x4), 06E121119J

Mate, have to say - this guide is unbelievable, so helpful for me today. I’ve taken off my supercharger a few times and needed to replace my S/C I/C’s due to an epc issue. Not only were the part numbers a god send but it took me literally 20 minutes to replace them because of your guide!! Massive thank you from the UK and now more confident than ever to do the rocket cover gasket change from your video!!
Keep up the good work mate and you’ll keep growing!!! How can I buy you a coffee or something without a super thanks on YT
No need for that bro. I'm just glad this helped! If you see other people that need help & I have a video that would be useful just send Em the link 🤘🏼
@@AudiC7Owners 100% bro!! Thank you again!
Awesome video. Thank you for going through the trouble to this for the channel.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
I'm enjoying the detailed and detailed work. Please let me know the information about the green medicine
What are symptoms of failed supercharger intercooler cores and what would cause them to fail ?
I have a 2013 a7 took the supercharger out clean. Both inner coolers came out, shiny and perfect ordered new gaskets and still when I punched it out, the engine light came on, and the EPC light came on. My only final thing could be, and I think it’s that is my catalytic converter because they put new coils on a new spark plug, so I’m kind of like don’t know anymore. It’s frustrating.
Did your intake flappers look clean? No orange or pink color?
I have the same problem
You fix it ?
Keep these up please
Will do!
@@AudiC7Owners I love your shop dude. Hopefully my wife and I will buy a house soon with a bigger garage. or even I would build my own little shop. That’s awesome to have so much space. I’m working out of a one car garage and it’s difficult
When I started the channel I was doing videos outside on a slab lol. This garage is the main reason I bought this new house. I love it. I just wish I could afford to finish it & make it look like a legit automotive enthusiast garage!
I guess I was wrong. Learn something new everyday.
Anyone know what size the replacement bleed screws are on top of the supercharger?
Are these b8 chargers the same as the b8.5? As I believe I have this issue on mine but not sure if the chargers and gaskets will be the same. Thanks!
In the US, yes
Can i ask why you didn’t use an aluminium cleaner solution instead of the simple green. I know you mentioned it doesn’t damage them but maybe they do become a bit more brittle and then add heat on top of that. Cant they wear out faster?
Great vid as always! What are your thoughts on a methanol injection kit to help with A.I.T's?
I only know of a few people that have messed with it. Check out @slowwa6 on Instagram. He is running it
@@AudiC7Owners Thanks
Decided to clean IC on my wife's 2017 Q7 at 100K miles while replacing PCV and unfortunately the gasket on one of the coolers came out torn around O-ring portion. Unfortunately there is no inexpensive alternatives for aftermarket IC for CREC gen. engine at this point and it hurts to pay $700+ for otherwise perfectly fine IC. Wonder if it would be possible to split the existing gasket where it connects to an O-ring section and find similar size O-ring to slide over, basically making it two piece gasket...? Would that work or am I missing something? Why in a right mind someone wouldn't sell a replacement gasket? I thought we're concerned about the environment. Seems like shortsighted to say the least. Owning 4 Audis and being in love with these cars I do wonder, why some things designed to be so complex... The moment you decide to replace PCV you want to swap as many otherwise perfectly working parts as you can so you don't have to take a SC again, that is besides all of the one time use gaskets.
I was able to fix my original gasket using Q-bond, and the car is back on the road. However, looking back, I don't know if I would do it again. Examining how my gasket failed, it appears it might have been pinched at the factory because it was actually curled where it failed, and me pulling it back after about 7 years was enough to rip it due to how tight it is there.
We have a 2013 Q7 3.0T and would like to see a DIY video on changing Supercharger oil. Thanks for the Great videos.
The next time I take mine off I will do that
@@AudiC7Owners Would the process not be the same? I'm literally planning on draining my oil tomorrow as I've taken off the supercharger today for the PVC swap.
He's referring to draining the oil inside the supercharger. It's actually a prices that needs to be done with care. If it isn't done correctly it can damage the supercharger.
@@AudiC7OwnersI was going to follow your video on changing my S/C oil tomorrow. Maybe you thought I was referring to the engine oil? I've really enjoyed your thorough videos.
I think you have me confused with another channel as I don't have a video on changing the supercharger oil lol
I just did the pcv/water pump/ tstat also did injector clean + reseal along with a carbon clean. Upon putting everything back together, my sq5 started to burn coolant in the combustion chambers... drove 5 minutes and turned around to find coolant in my oil... I removed the supercharger and found coolant in my intake runners. I removed both intercooler cores from the supercharger and they looked cooked... no oil in my coolant though... what could it be?
1) where did you set coolant in your oil? Did your you see it by opening your oil cap?
2) coolant in your intake flaps is 100% from leaking ic cores
@AudiC7Owners I drained the oil, and it was like chocolate milk. I removed the ic cores and put water in them to test for leaks. After 24 hours the water level remained the same. I did order new cores just in case... I then proceeded to remove the new pcv valve and found oil & coolant at the base of the unit... I think the new pcv was d.o.a. I put the old one back in, which wasn't that old. I will need to remove the oil pan & flush the engine with new oil a couple of times to clean everything. Luckily, I didn't run the car too long. Before even starting this whole job, the car ran fine. Only had a little rough idle I wanted to get rid of.
I will wait for the new ic cores to come & will test the car afterwards. I'm really at my last draw on this car... if that doesn't work I will need to bring it to a local shop
@samueldesbiens2524 that is crazy man. Was it a oem pcv you used as a replacement?
Sometimes the cores need pressure to see the leak. There isn't any other way for coolant to get into the intake valves other than bad cores.
@AudiC7Owners the new pcv was not an oem spec. I bought it from rock auto. Lesson learned on cheaping out of oem spec parts. I almost killed my engine.
There were no engine lights or codes after doing the job but as soon as I saw white smoke... I knew it was burning coolant.
I redid the pcv job, and it took me half the time.
I won't take any chances on those ic cores. The new ones will be delivered Tuesday. I cleaned the supercharger/throttlebody, changed the oil, added the ecs tuning magnetic plug. There were signs of coolant behind the throttlebody plate...
My theory is that the new pcv was doa and the ic core were cooked. The pcv let coolant through the tube under the supercharger.
I will keep you posted. Thanks for making these videos. They are extremely helpful.
Good luck man! Make sure you don't accidentally set the supercharger on the studs in a way they can puncture the IC's. That's a common rookie mistake that causes ic damage
Hello, just clean the intercoolers with water? I would like to know ok greetings thanks
Great video, thanks
the 3.0T relocation kit is out of stock. Any ETA?
So I’m doing a PCV change the cars at 68k miles so not crazy mileage but I figure I’d deal with everything I can while it’s off. You think it would still be worth while to clean the SC ICs since I’m already there?
I'm in the same boat as you with similar mileage. Did you end up doing it? If so, how bad was it?
@ if you can replace it’s worth it. Parts aren’t too expensive and everything is already out so it saves you time. The most time consuming part is taking out the SC. It’s not even hard just time consuming
@@Mazena03 you replaced your ICs altogether? Did you notice any difference after doing so? How bad did the originals look?
@@Mazena03 just checked prices and each core sells for a minimum of $300. Maybe you thought I was asking you about the pcv valve when you mentioned parts are cheap lol. I was asking if you went ahead and cleaned your SC cores like you asked about in your original question and how it went. I'm also about to go in and do a bunch of maintenance on my car and debating if I should mess with the SC while I'm in there, at only 66k
@ there’s a kit on FCP EURO that’s everything you need for about 600. The Audi kit is like 1400 😅 but if that’s not an option then yes cleaning it is worth it. Doesn’t it long and cleans the Shit out of them.
Loaded question...how did you dispose of the Simple Green??
Down the drain.
Hey Cameron did you ever figure out what that oil was in the throttle body opening...i have that same oil build up and im running a I.E. cai.🤔
My best guess is that when the check valve in the breather hose that connects from your pcv to your intake fails, it allows oil vapors to get sucked in rather than only pulling in clean air to the pcv
So did it help your iat??
this was a good video
What’s the part number for the gasket on the entrance of the intercooler
I got a cyl 2 misfire swaped coil and plug the cyl 2 plug looks like it’s coolant fouled. The misfire stayed on 2 . I was leaning toward the cooler . After seeing where the seams are on the cooler I’m not sure cyl 2 would get coolant from the cooler.
It can absolutely happen.
What company do you recommend for the coolers ?
@@275stratos mahle makes the oem ones. I think fcp euro has them in stock
Did one last check cyl 2 has 25 psi. 🤦🏽
Oooof... Rip
Hey Cameron, for some people who might be doing this job in a future could you please verify if the coolant pipe screws need to be torqued at 9 NM..? CREC engine manual was showing only 5 NM.
Crec might be different from mine. Go with what you're engine menial says
@@AudiC7Owners I questioned 5nm because it seemed to be rather low and barely enough to compress new seals. 9nm seemed to be too much for this pipe though. When I put it together I went with 7nm personally. I pressurized the system before I put everything together and it maintained the pressure. Again, I just wanted to double check.
hey, stupid question. i’m looking to replace my cores in my supercharger and i’m wondering if the cores are the same? like on fcp euro it says sold individually and i don’t wanna order two lefts or two rights 😂😅
They are not side specific. You just need 2
@@AudiC7Ownersthis why you’re the best C7 youtuber. thanks man 🤝
Are the supercharger cores the same as the supercharger bricks people commonly refer to on these motors?
Yes
The Intercooler you have shown in your video have very nice breather screws on it, my original plastic ones are broken, where do I can get some of those you have in your Intercoolers?
MercRacing sells a nice set 👍🏻
We also have a video showing how to remove the broken plastic screws
@@AudiC7Owners Great, thanks so much for this information, I will try to find it. :)
@@AudiC7Owners Perfect, thanks so much
Did you disconnect the battery to perform this job? I am doing this soon, SC oil flush and bricks cleaning..thanks
Nope. No need
Cool. Thanks for your help on maintaining our audis..!
hello, good afternoon, a question where can I buy the intercooler cores for an Audi A6 tfsi 3.0t, thanks
Ecs tuning or fcp euro
Hey man! Long time watcher. Love the vids.
My 2012 A7 has been making a whistling sound after driving for 15-20 mins.
I got the PCV valve replaced as I thought it may have been that but it hasn’t stopped the sound.
Do you have any idea what it may be ?
I know it’s a pretty general question but hoping you’ve experienced something similar 🙏
I'd inspect the intake system first. Is it only after a certain amount of time? Or is it above a certain speed.
@@AudiC7Owners Hey, thanks for the reply. It seems to only really be when the engine is hot. It makes the sound even when just revving the car while stationary.
But it doesn’t really make the sound when idle.
I wish I could tell you exactly, but you may have to get it diagnosed by a shop. I can't diagnose it without seeing the car in person.
@@AudiC7Owners Thats absolutely fine man - I will get them to look at it next time I get a service. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!
@@monas9148 did you find out what it is because I have the same issue
Can you just change 1 core if there is only 1 thats bad? Budget issues cause my cores a 7 and 900 a peice
Yes. You can change one at a time
Is it possible to clean the cores without taking them out like spraying concentrated simple green onto the cores through the holes beneath the supercharger and the rinsing them?
No. That wouldn't do anything & you wouldn't be able to flush everything out
@@AudiC7Owners Thank you. Your video is very helpful. Helping us diyers to avoid expensive mistakes.
That's why I'm here 👍🏻
Hello, one question, what product did you use to clean the intercooler cores? Thank you.
I talk about it in the video where I clean them, but I used simple green
What issues where you having with your iat?
Thanks for this!
Great video!!
Thank you!
did you get an performance increasement from that ??
My iat's definitely went down about 5 degrees. Not a ton, but after I replaced them with new cores, they dropped significantly.
Is a core replacement the only solution for a leak?
Yes. They cannot be repaired.
@@AudiC7Owners ive got a cyl 5 misfire and i was watching your valve cover gasket vid and the part with your plugs made me thing to take another look at my old plugs and i also noticed i was down on coolant a bit too with no explained leaks and there was a bit of flaking on plug 5 and 6
That could be it.
@@AudiC7Owners my other guess was a partially clogged injector until i noticed the coolant. Mahle seems to be on back order through most sites for the cores unfortunately though. Im only getting a EPC and its only when im over 40% throttle
Do you still have your catalytic converters? Because I had the same symptoms as you when my catalytic converters started to clog.
Aren't they interchangeable, both fit both side?
The intercooler cores?
@@AudiC7Owners yes sir?
Yes they can go in either side, but I wouldn't swap them if they've been used on one side already. Keep them on the same side after using them if you have to take them out for whatever reason.
So how does the intercoolers even get air onto the fins to help with the cooling process? Seems like a very inefficient design and I think Audi should have gone with maybe a front mount intercooler.
Directly from the intake
@@AudiC7Owners Is it an air to air intercooler liquid to air type?
Liquid to air
Clever bit of engineering to have the intercoolers right next to the supercharger in one package. Curious why Audi didn't have them front mounted, no space maybe?
That's above my pay grade. Just wish they were more durable/efficient.
@@AudiC7Owners haha I hear ya. We have to pay to play with the big boys in the "luxury" car market.
I dont really understand how this intercooler works
No worries!
Here is a fast breakdown:
On our engines run on an Air-to-Water cooling system. There are two separate Loops inside of one coolant system. You fill your coolant in through your Reservoir and that fills up the two loops which are connected at a T-junction.
One Loop is your engine, heater core, & the engine's radiator.
The other loop is your supercharger coolant loop. The parts of that are a coolant pump, a heat exchanger which is located in front of your radiator, and then your supercharger which has two separate intercooler cores located inside of it. The coolant is pushed through the heat exchanger which uses air to flow to cool down the coolant. Then it goes into the supercharger intercooler cores which also uses air coming in through the intake to cool down the coolant even more. All of this is done to reduce the temperature of the air being pushed into your intake manifold. The cooler the air, the better the performance. This air temp is referred to as you're IAT's, or Intake Air Temperatures.
Hope that helps
@Audi C7 Owners thank you, so the short is that the supercharger air is run through a water-cooled intercooler system. What kind of Temps can it achieve? It doesn't seem like you could get front mount or top mount intercooler temperatures but this is the first time I've learned about a water-cooled intercooler
It definitely isn't as cool as an Air-to-Air system.
The car will retard timing if your IAT's go over 80C/175F and you will lose about 40% of your power.
With the right cooling mods you can easily stay under this even with big performance upgrades.
Any updates on the pcv?
I'm inspecting for oil leaks too rule that out, but I believe my breather tube that comes out of the pcv is broken... Rather the check valve on it is. Probably going to open everything back up to replace it and pray it works
I've also read that valve cover gaskets can cause some leaks and go through a good bit of oil
I have zero signs of valve cover leaks
@@AudiC7Owners @Audi C7 Owners International That was my issue on my 3.0T. Part looked pristine too. It's been a couple months now with no faults so I think I'm in the clear.
Did you have bad oil consumption while it was bad?
