DIY - How To Build A Rolling Stand For A Balloon Tire Honda US90 / ATC90

- The first 5 years that Honda made three wheelers, they came with "Balloon Tires". These tires haven't been made since the 70's, so there are becoming almost impossible to find. The best thing that someone can do to help preserve these tires is to keep them off the ground. That means making a stand for the machine to sit on.
Some stands catch the rear axle and front axle. They're functional, but usually the front portion hides the front tire. Stands that sit on the ground are also a problem when it comes time to move the machine... so that's not ideal either. What I did was took a design from a stand that came with a machine that I bought from my buddy Toby and copied that, BUT... I shortened the legs and put casters under it. I'm loving the finished product!
The stand is made with 1" square tube. The uprights are all 8" tall. The rear piece that parallels the axle is 12" long, the front piece that is under the foot pegs is 22" long, and the piece that connects the front to the back is 17" long. The castors are available through amazon. Find them here - www.amazon.com... I used 2" black steel pipe cut down to cradle the axle. I used some sort of channel piece to catch the foot pegs.
If you would like to make one, I can give you more detail. I'm half tempted to make more and sell them! Who knows!
Thanks for watching!

All good welds have "character". they look good!
Thanks brother! As does your recent wood work!!

Thanks! A buddy recommended you guys to me almost 3 years ago and I've been using you ever since!
What I like most about your projects is that you do them yourself! Nice job!
I appreciate that! I probably do that just because I'm stubborn and "frugal"... lol. This was very rewarding though!
I’m the same way , it’s more rewarding when all said and done.
Here
Excellent 👍 just need to find a US 90 now...😴😴
Oh yeah, that's probably a challenge up there! Did you guys get them?? Or only if imported? Thanks for watching too! I'm still hitting the gym!
Please 🙏
YOU START MAKING BALLON TIRES
Thanks bud
I've been told by my friend that the process to reproduce those is very involved and just old technology... so a company would have to tool up (beyond just a tire mold) to even do it... so it's pretty safe to say that it's not going to happen...
first
Yes you are! Welcome brother!
20 more to go lol
Right! lol... I've created a monster...
I need to get a weld machine, I also need a 3Wheeler 😁👽👍
I highly recommend both!
Yes sir. No more sparklers
It's amazing the difference! It's pretty fun now!
@ThisOldTrike absolutely a great thing to know how to do
Those turned out really nice. If you decided to sell these you should figure out a way to make the front to rear center cross piece bolt on. That way they would collapse down nice for shipping purposes.
Yes sir! Already been thinking about it!
love the idea for welding those nuts into the frame 🧠
Thanks man! Seemed like the right thing to do!! Your niece is so helpful... Couldn't have got the 90's on the stands without her.
Dang, wish I had shop to weld something up. If you have an extra, I'll buy it off of you. Have to preserve the legacy. Jackstands are great, right up until I have to move it, as you well know.
I don't have any extras currently, but I definitely need to build more! I'll keep you posted!
Works great! Nice job.
Thank you!!
Smart! Gotta keep them balloon tires minty and clean!
Yes sir! You know the deal!
Awesome video as always. You make it look easy!!! I love your shop
Thanks brother!! It was definitely easier once I figured out why my set up wasn't correct! Now it's pretty fun!
Love the project and great opportunity for your daughter to be a part of it. I find with our son, (he’s 11) anything less straight forward and its very hard to keep his attention. Good work, and the stands should give you a lot of piece of mind ! 🙂👌
Yes sir! She is my most involved when it comes to this stuff. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty too! My younger son (14) is very handy, but loses interest fast. If I can't keep him busy every moment, before I know it he's telling me he's going back into the house. When I was his age I was out in the shop working on stuff by myself.
Very cool brother.
Thanks man!! I appreciate it!
Nice... I need to put a couple machines on something... 👍
Oh yeah. Now this has my mind running... thinking about all the machines I could put these under...
Those turned out awesome man! You’ve got them down pat! The plastic caps in the ends was a nice way to finish those!
Thank you sir! I'm super pumped with how they turned out. I just ordered 80 more feet of square tube.... God help me.
Nice man! That will be nice having all of them on those! Shoot it looks like your ready to manufacture those bad boys!
Another project on the list! Anyone know how to get the balloons off without damaging them? I’m about to start a conversion so my US90 can be ridden again and I’d like to unbolt from the hub and axle.
Thank you! So, your question... the balloon tires come off the hub. There are 3 bolts. Mike Palmgren at Vintage Motorsports ( shop.vintagemotorsports.net/ ) sells adapters and a kit to give you the look of the balloon tires, but with modern tires. Check him out!
@@ThisOldTrike Yeah, been looking at those. I have a couple old adapters I had purchased some time ago and I saw those updated hub/rim combo; just haven’t been able to convince the wife to spend that kind of $ yet.😏🤷🏼♂️ Meanwhile, I’m just looking for something that will cram down in there to get those bolts out!🤣
Awesome Preston , maybe some of that selfstick 2" wide truck camper gasket they stick to the top of the sides of the bed of the trucks. You didnt happen to draw a schematic / material cut list by any chance ?
I'll look into it. I had this rubber on hand and needed to use it for something anyway. I didn't draw a schematic, but I list out the lengths of everything in the description of the video.
great build, the castors make it nice so you can move and sweep under them.@@ThisOldTrike
Thanks man. Yes sir, now they have 360 degrees of mobility, so they can be moved so much easier...
Your shop with all your bikes is incredible, thanks for sharing this neat little stand. I would like to build one and would like to learn some more details if you don't mind. BTW your daughter is adorable. My daughter helped me out in the shop also when younger, now she is 30 years old, is married and is a school teacher. It seemed like yesterday she was a teenager hanging out with me in the shop. Ha!
Thank you for that!! I appreciate it! What can I help you with?
Thanks for the offer of help, but I watched your video several times and have it figured out! I went ahead and ordered the casters thru your link. Wish you would have shown better how to get the bike onto the stand but I will get it done. Have you figured out if there is a liquid rubber that can be brushed onto the tires to eliminate the cracks. I remember in the old day we used black shoe polish. What do you think? Also, have you used green slime to stop the slow leaks of the balloon tires? @@ThisOldTrike
Great! Glad you figured it out! Thank you for ordering the casters through the link! I'm just starting to get some orders through there so it's neat to watch. So, all I did to put the bike on the stand was to pull the rear fenders so I could see the axle as I lifted the grab bar/rear end up... then I had Palin slide the stand under and move it based on what I was telling her. It was kind of a 2 person job. Regarding the cracks, no, I don't have a miracle topical cure for that... but there is a black rubbery substance that Mike Palmgren told me about that you pump in through the air valve like slime. Slime is bad for the metal of the hub and will corrode it over time. This other stuff was better. Same principal though.
Welds look good i dont like A,B,C heat settings on some smaller hobby welders i like amp settings.... then again im in the stone age, welding with fire
Thanks brother. I'm just pumped to be able to stick pieces of metal together!
@ThisOldTrike it is fun... sometimes I just weld stuff to stay in practice... you know just incase I need to turn a 48"x48" sheet of 18 Guage into an exhaust
I am VERY excited to see how that exhaust comes out!! You'll be a pro by the end of it!
@@ThisOldTrike let's hold our excitement, I already had to cut a chunk off and reset
You say you have every 3 Wheeler model, but I don't see a 3 wheel. You have that doesn't have a electric start Like the first model 1982 pull start do you have one
I'm not sure what model you're describing. Can you say that again?
@ThisOldTrike Look at my channel. There a 1982 Honda 3 Wheeler 200 Big red that doesn't have a starter on it and the decals on the gas tank is different
