Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a television series developed by Bryan Lee O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski for Netflix. The series is based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels written and drawn by O'Malley, with the entire main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, reprising their roles, serving as re-imagining of the graphic novel and film. The series was released on November 17, 2023 to critical acclaim. The series, set in Toronto, Canada, serves as an alternate retelling of the original Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series and movie. Like in the original series, Scott Pilgrim, a bassist in an indie band, falls in love with Ramona Flowers, a mysterious delivery girl, attracting the attention of Ramona's seven evil exes. Things take an unexpected turn when Scott loses his battle against Ramona's first evil ex Matthew Patel and is seemingly killed. As the trajectory of everyone's lives, including those of Ramona's evil exes, change drastically as a result, Ramona learns that Scott may still be alive and investigates his disappearance.

I liked this series because not only did it allow Ramona to actually mature and grow a little, but it allowed the Evil Exes to be given more background on why they were psychopaths in the first place. I also enjoyed how "Takes Off" doesn't *erase* the movie or the graphic novels, and instead use the "multiverse" angle in the *right* way. Rather than resurrecting chracters or red-doing what we already know. "Future Scott" is scarier than Nega Scott, in my opinion. "Future Ramona" is an earned character, given her intital personality and all 3 arcs she goes through in the books, movie, and this.
Totally agree with this, angle of using the other universes as teachable moments for Scott was brilliant. Takes Off isn’t trying to out due or make the others irrelevant, just offering a different take on the source material
As a fan of the original story. I was pleasantly surprised by the bait and switch. Having Romana take the role of protagonist and be forced to reconcile with her own Ex's was great to see.
She got so much love in this series bro, became one of my favorite scott pilgrim characters now
To each their own, but this really turned me off as someone who thought gideon and scott were cool characters. I don't really like being "tricked". Keven Smith did that with the he man show and that rubbed me wrong in a similiar way. I will stick to the game, movie, and comic.
I'm really glad Bryan got to revisit Ramona's character through the anime, and I can't wait to see another side to her once I check out the comics
Same here dude, I plan on doing a retrospective on the comic so Im definitely re-reading the comic when I get a chance
I honestly feel that this show came out at a good time in my life and i connect with it very well for someone who is in their early 20's (just turned 23). I'm happy with the growth and changes they did for this show. it was just the best.
Honestly agreed, I love series that allow me to self reflect and Takes Off did that for me. Growing up and getting older or even being young and figuring it out doesn’t have to be scary. Just don’t dwell on it and do the work
Fantastic video bro! Totally dont get the backlash to this show, its so well done! Only complaint is that there isn't more of it. Keep up the quality work bro!
I think people are just adverse to change and to an extent I can understand that. But this series has so much to say thats worth saying so I hope those people see the light
They brought back all the original actors to voice their cartoon counterparts(which by the way from what i observed is oretty rare becuase most tv adapatarions from movies have different people portraying the characters especially if its animated),brought back the og director edgar wright, and the creator brian lee o'malley and it was all animated by science saru.this show it the epitome of perfection
All the elements of a perfect adaptation
If it was advertised as an alternate reality sequel starring Ramona, there wouldn't be any backlash. People are open minded enough, and likely would have embraced, an alternate version rather than just rehashing the comics or movie again. But when you market it one way, and then it's actually another thing, should you really be surprised that some people don't like to be tricked?
I think it’s less about lying to the fans and more about keeping the story close to vest as to maintain that element of surprise that was present for fans of og scott pilgrim. For a story like this and where it takes people, imo it was the right choice not to give away too much before it even came out
Oh this show was amazing. Both the movie and the show are AMAZING. Part of me still wants to see the comics faithfully adapted in this style, same cast etc, but what we got here was totally brilliant and my only complaint is that this show is too short damn it!
Brian has been quoted saying that he might be interested in making more for SP but it’s still up in the air. While I prefer for good stories to just end on a high, if he has more stuff I am so down lol
This is such a well made video omg, I hope you get more recognition soon on your channel 🙏
Appreciate the love! Hoping the new videos for this year reach more people
AYO?!?! Unbeatable music in the intro??? I thought no one knew about that game!! 🔥
oh man nice intro song choice, mirror fits so well with scott pilgrim and its probably my favourite song from unbeatable!
I love Unbeatable and the music, I’ve been waiting for a perfect opportunity to use of the songs for a video and Scott Pilgrim was a no brainer. Need more media with its aesthetic
1. I completely agree with you. It threw me off at first but in a great way. By the end, I thought it was great!
2. I'm very glad I discovered your channel. You make great videos. Keep going!
Incredible video. Really articulated my feelings for the show in a way I can't.
Took some time to put it all into a proper script. But for something I care about this much, I just had to talk about it. Thank you⭐️
12:43 well, this can exist in the comics or an faitful adaptation that managers to add some stuff. And they can be told through comics if I ever want to adapt the Netflix story back into a comic.
Great video, man 👍
APPRECIATE YOU FAM!!!
It is the scott pilgrim what if of this framchise!
Deadass bro, what an amazing concept
@@JohnnyStar right!
The title and thumbnail, followed by the video itself kinda pull the same kind of bait and switch the show did 😂
Lmao that was definitely intentional
Great video
THANK YOU!!!😭
8:19 it’s ironic because spider verse also massively deviates from the source material
As a long time fan of the comics movie and game I didn’t feel betrayed at all, I was worried initially but it was made up by a great different story
I'll be honest, most non fans like me kind of enjoy the show because we aren't stuck to the idea of what should be what when it comes to the franchise.
i was hesitant about SPTO but they definitely cooked here!
I was so taken out by the second episode, I was so ready to hate on it but Im glad I stuck it out

Lol saving it for a future video
I have a new appreciation for this anime now. W video.
very good video :)
Thank you!
Amazing vid as usual man. I've never personally seen anything from Scott Pilgrim before, but I really liked the anime! If anything, it made me want to check out the movie and the comics
It’s definitely worth going back and checking it out. The anime is my favorite SP thing now but the originals are still great and products of their time. The movie rules so hard lol
I definitely recommend the comics! They're some of my all time favorite things ever, in general
The movie also. exists
Johnny was waiting to say that FLCL line at the end. Haven't watched it yet so I know I spoiled myself but I wanted to support my boy as well as come back and reflect on my initial thoughts now before watching to after watching. Never was a HUGE fan of Scott Pilgrim but to be fair, I only consumed the movie. I feel like now maybe I should go read the comic and watch this new adaption and see if I fall in love with it like all of you. I'll be back to tell you if I do!
Can’t wait to see what you think!
Great video! (Also IMMESLY based taste with the Unbeatable music 👌🏾)
I felt like it was more of an alternative universe reboot. But I would raver have a faithful adaptation of the comics
I felt the same way. The comic is amazing and definitely worth creating a fully animated space for
@@JohnnyStar hopefully we could get a brotherhood. And if he wanted to tell a different version, then they should just make a new comic book series that follows the Netflix story. Who knows, hopefully they might adapt, takes off into a manga.
Brilliant video everything you said I pretty much agree with
How do you feel about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off?
What's the song at the beginning?
dude, these people who say that the series sucks just because it's not a 1:1 retelling of the story are really missing the point of the OG story's themes. I feel kinda sad for them, really.
I feel like I have every right to get back at them
7:14 he should of done this much later. First he should do an adaptation
Yes im glad you said it, i Felt FLCL off it. And i liked that indescribable feeling
I will be doing a full review of the two new seasons sometime in January but yeah the feeling was apparent the moment I finished Takes Off
Mother's basement made the same comment on Scott being a better FLCL
I saw he mentioned it on Twitter before I watched it and I wasn’t sure I was gonna agree. After watching it, he was so fucking right. Once I put out my review of the newer seasons, I wanna go more in depth on the comparison
4:45 I pictured the Tokyo ghoul dub cast
6:09 it went Tokyo ghoul root A
11:34 doesn’t get any extra moments, and I feel like they unflushed around, and she barely gets any screen time honestly
Shot answer yes it’s bad adaptation (on purpose) even thought it has some good moments.
Sorry you didn’t like it, bud
@@JohnnyStar no, I had Tokyo ghoul root A ptsd. I felt like I was got punched by the creators.
8:51 well they certainly didn’t
11:04 I honestly would say they kind of watered down some of the characters and made them worse in a way
8:00 why not just make another comic
It was bad. I really felt they didn't know what to do with the story.
9:32 removing him makes a lot of problems and Ramona isn’t that interesting of a main character
My issue with the bait and switch, is that Ramona is kind of a scumbag, she has one of the most epic hoe phases in the history of dating, and we're supposed to feel bad for her? That's asking a lot when you realize shes the one who broke up with them. All the episodes were a giant trauma dump attempt and it just felt lacking. Killing* Scott off was just the excuse needed, so that didn't bother me, its who they wanted to front the band, and for me, Ramona was never it.
Its basically a retelling with Ramona as the lead with an ending that essentially makes her a goddess....its definitely made for the era we're in, but it didn't need to be. Everything else is a 10, but Ramona will always be a 1 for me.
I lov3 th1s show.
YESAAAH STEVE!! LICK A LEMON :]
no i love this show
Same
Lisa miller?
No.
Done lmao
10:20 ironically, it was more boring
So they gave it the He Man treatment and kill off Scott? Nah ima pass
Uh…no, I mean if you’re interested in watching it thats fine but it’s not like that. It’s just a different take on the Scott Pilgrim Mythos
Ok as a fan of the original i hate this show, old Scott is an interesting idea but it completely neglects all growth scott had in the original and yes he had a lot and it seems like Bryan doesn’t even know his own characters anymore it is a terrible show that ruins the original
Personality I am against of the idea that future Scott is comic Scott I feel like that just undo all of the development that he had during the comics just to develop a less superior version of him who had his arc rushed it also makes the comics feel useless because to see all of the development he had during the comics to become a better person just to find out that he is a even worse person in the future just feels like a insult lucky o mally confirmed that future Scott isn't comic Scott on a Instagram story
Edit: I also disagree with you when you said the characters were more developed I felt like most of the cast were flanderizied especially Wallace
I can see that, I may have simplified my view on Future Scott a bit for the sake of pacing. The overall take I was going for was this version of Scott is the one that leaned more into his more selfish side thats visible in the original text. Along with dealing with a Ramona who didn’t have a proper growth arc herself. Making it so young scott and young ramona can see what paths their lives could take if they don’t acknowledge their own flaws. This story to me is more about Ramona than it is Scott imo
@@JohnnyStar I see what you mean I was just saying how I felt at the idea of future Scott being the Scott from the comics
I never liked Scott himself, so this series is perfect for me, lmao. It keeps and enhances everything great about the story and gets rid of the one thing I actually hated.
