Informative video for those that do not know how and where produce magically appears from in the markets. Asparagus is not an easy crop either. One of my fav vegetables!
Sometimes I eat it raw , it grows wild on the property I purchased.I transplanted some so I don't have to walk so much to harvest. The workers make me look lasy.
After my family and I relocated from California to Boise in the early 80’s we would drive the canal sides near our farm and harvest wild asparagus. I was only in grade school back then so I don’t remember all of the details but it was interesting knowing that some food is free as long as you’re not trespassing or stealing. Please know the difference before going out on an adventure and if there are questions go knock someone’s door and ask. If they aren’t the property owners I’m sure they can point you in the right direction. I miss those slow and quiet days as the farm only lasted till the late 80’s and our family moved into town and we never looked back. It was nice to learn early in life how make a living rather than learning that same lesson at 20 YO.
@@Theproducenerd We had tractors to sit on while we leaned over and cut the asparagus, in the packing house the main difference is we had nifty turn-tables where we could quickly elastic the bundles of asparagus
I remember back in about 1950 in Niles, Michigan when I found a hillside mostly covered with what I imagine was wild asparagus. So I started cutting it (I was 12) and we had fresh asparagus, lightly fried with butter, when it was in season. I used to particularly enjoy lying down next to an as yet uncut spear and watching it grow. Yes! You could actually see it move on its journey upward out of the ground. I cut them when they were about six to eight inches tall. Commercial ones today are cut at longer lengths and, as a result, the bottoms of the spears can be a little stringy. Still good stuff, though.
I came for asparagus, but left with a sense of respect for Mexicans or wherever they're from because some aren't just from Mexico. The USA should stop deporting them because they're one of the most hard working group of people I've came across. These people deserve a safe place to live with their family.
I worked in wholesale produce for over 23 years I traveled the country hauling produce from cali Miami GA NY Idaho Arizona back to Tennessee for the company I worked for hard work yes but well worth it.........
When I bought my house, asparagus was growing in the backyard. The former owners had white asparagus as well as green. They cautioned us not to let it grow taller than 5 inches oh, but commercial growers make more money by letting it get up to 10 inches tall which is a big waste because the bottom is inedible
Thank you! I recently did another post on the difference between the thick and thin asparagus spears that might be of interest to you: www.theproducenerd.com/2017/05/which-is-better-thick-or-thin-asparagus/.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you are into learning more about where other food products come from, you can check out some of the other videos on my channel.
The best 'gras in the world comes from the Vale of Evesham in Worcs., England. They have auctions in the season, at a pub called "the Round of 'gras" and buyers from the worlds top hotels attend, prices are sky high.
I just got 2#;s of asparagus today for 5c. I didn't notice the price glitch until I was looking through my receipt for another item. The scale must have been off today. I've never, ever seen asparagus for $5.00 a pound so I feel for you. I am always a glutton for asparagus until its out of season, then I don't buy as much. I also grow it in my own garden but its never enough because I don't have a huge patch. Thank god for these hard working souls.
The biggest expense now for asparagus us labor, especially in California. That includes the pickers, and the packers/processors. The largest and original asparagus growing area in California, the San Joaquin Delta, now no longer grows much asparagus all because of the California minimum guaranteed wage laws, and the Food Safety Act and record keeping requirements. When it costs more to pick and pack the product than what Mexico ships it in for, it is no longer a viable commodity to grow. The American consumer buys strictly on price, and the large box stores always buy the cheapest. now matter the origin.
"High quality water?" H2O is H2O. Do you mean like sterile water instead of pond water? Sounds strange to me, kind of like the word "natural" used on many foods and other items. Cat urine is natural, as is cow manure, dog hair, etc., etc.
It’s well paid work but bramble hard believe me and you would be amazed how quickly it will star to bend when the sun comes up it will bend toward the light so you are expected to pick fast as it will wilt very fast once picked I’ve never worked in a packing shed but my daughter has done carrots and beans on a conveyer line and it can make you feel seasick watching the belt moving past your eyes the big bonus about picking the workers can generally take home as much as they like especially if they take the odd shaped ones as they don’t sell well the consumer is really dumb about their fruition and veg they want as little as possible stalk on broccoli yet the stalk is completely edable and often the tastiest part
I worked at a strawberry farm in my teens, and yes, consumers are wacky about what they will purchase. Any of the odd or too small fruit was given to the workers. We used to trade with other growers and pickers in the area for whatever they were growing. If you made enough friends you could always have fresh items to use at home. I always planned my meals on the fly and around whatever I brought home for free or low cost.
My late father was a commercial grower in the UK and we used to eat all the odd shape ones -either too fat or too thin! Supermarket imported asparagus is a poor imitation and not worth eating. ! I love fresh (in season) asparagus and by the way I have never had asparagus wee!
Very few people care how their food gets to supermarket..i need to know if they chemicals and if the farms are destroying land and water like Pineapples .
They work it in the worst way possible..... the tip of it shoud be never topped down or touched cause its very fragile and its the best of it....and guess what the work it with the top down.... learn from germans how to do it.... u ruin the quality. Greetings from Germany
cutting and packaging for limited space on shelves of stores across the country, but if your engineering degree can make the process so much better and put just a few more HUMANS out of work. By all means contact these business'
I don't think it is shelve space or work place issue, but customer psychology - in society with too much excess food customers set unrealistic standards how food should look. hipster won't buy greens if it can't post picture of it on instagram, lol :D I bet that we as civilization already can afford to give free food for all humans and move on to solving next thing - like curing cancer, teraforming Mars or painting next Mona Lisa, but no, humans stick with sorting asparagus.
Buy the thin asparagus. The thick ones are woody. I love the smell of my pee after eating asparagus from methanethiol. When I had property and a large garden I planted 6 asparagus plants and they produced beautiful and tasty sprouts. One plant was devoted to white asparagus by covering the sprouts with mulch depriving them of sunlight. I miss that property. Bought cheap, developed and sold high. Now I love spending my money for simple things and wouldn't dreaming of giving it away. Making the right choices is the road to prosperity . Nothing is for free. Work for it. Otherwise screw you and FO.

Thank you to all the workers! So many parts to the food we eat. I bought this Asparagus at Costco in B.C. A long jouney from farm to our plate. Viva!
Just watching this makes my back ache. I hope everyone appreciates the grueling work these folks do.
YES!!! Most people do not even consider this is what it takes to bring produce to the market!
I was an asparagus harvester and packer in Canada, the techniques are so similar, yet so different in California ASPARAGUS PRODUCERS UNITE!
What were the main differences?

Beautiful narration. Everyone is working so hard. God Bless Everyone.
Thank you!
I love asparagus! God bless those hard working Mexicans!
This is cool! Kudos to the workers!
Yes!
Love asparagus - many thanks to these hard workers....
I like putting asparagus on toast with mushroom soup out of the can and topping with shredded cheese and grilling in the oven until hot and melted😋
As a produce clerk, I thank you. I love to see this stuff get harvested
Enjoyed watching. Thanks to all the hard workers shown. I love asparagus.
had asparagus in my garden don't think any of it ever made it to the kitchen! Ate it right on the spot, delicious.

Nobody works harder than agricultural workers.
May humpty trumpty come back as a field worker in his next life. I do hope that they have a decent living wage.
These people work so great.
I grow my own..took 5 years to get enough for the family..now I harvest about 30 lbs during the growing season
That's awesome!
What is the harvesting time for this great vegetable. What does a field look like at the end of the season? thanks
Who else was eating asparagus when they watched this video ? :D

Most Definitely. Or even illegal.

Yes, you must try asparagus!

In Belgium we prefer white asparagus, much more labor intensive to harvest.
Yes! The white asparagus is more of a specialty item in the U.S.

The thicker and whiter the asparagus, the less edible it is. Just keep it in mind when buying.

Very few people care how their food gets to supermarket..i need to know if they chemicals and if the farms are destroying land and water like Pineapples .
Need more automation to reduce the cost of produce .
No, people just need to not care about uniformity, or aesthetics. Pick it, spray it, sell it by the pound.
Negative…you mean, reduce jobs?

Asparagus should NEVER be bundled with rubber bands, the traditional way is with Willow withy or Raffia.
