How to manage the controller on you while you ride is the real trick to this it seems. As an alternative to strapping it on your chest, I've seen some youtube users set up the drone in the air to active track and then take off the joysticks and place the controller in a backpack for a short amount of time to ride a segment (and then re-engage the joysticks and land the drone after a short clip). The Skydio 2+ drone with a beacon seems to be more set up for following sports, but that option is over twice the cost of your setup.

It's not to say I'm not interested in more drone content I'm esp how it does in the woods.
the only thing better than the drone would be to have a drone with a 360 camera on it so you don't worry about where it steers itself too much because you can always reframe the video afterwards to show something else that's in the 360 shot. I've long been a fan of the 360 camera concept. they're getting better at it but they still haven't perfected the parallax distortion at the seam. for something like a drone shot though, if you're shooting a one-off thing like a race, it's not like you can do another take, so being able to pick anything you want to see in the 360 frame and punch in on it seems like a gold mine to me. I think at that size a 360 camera is still pretty limited in its ability to be able to maintain quality when you punch in, but those little drones are great for a lot of the adventure trips you do where you can't necessarily take a camera crew everywhere. even if you disregard the ability to film for GMBN, you could probably use it to help scout a route during a cross country adventure eventually when I do the solo touring trip that I want to do, that little drone would be one of the cameras I would take, I would probably also want a 360 camera of some sort either the insta360 or a GoPro max
@@better.better I have owned both the GoPro Max and the insta360. The GoPro does a far better job at stitching at the seam but they both have very noticeable distortion. The image doesn't look natural. By the way the GoPro has terrible Windows software so I ended up sticking with the insta360. But even so I rarely use it and I'm thinking of selling it. Mainly because of the image not looking anything like that of a regular camera. It's just the nature of 360 cameras. I wouldn't want one on a drone to be honest. It would make the footage look cheap compared to a regular camera. I would rather have multiple regular cameras on a drone for the purposes of capturing more action.
Do check local legislation, most places require you to fly VLOS (maintaining physical sight of the drone at all times). I feel flying autonomously while riding a bike does not fulfill this requirement. There might be some exceptions if you have an assistant watching the drone. Assuming you have a battery-charger case (From the Fly-More-set?), get a powerbank, and always charge the the batteries you are not using while flying/riding/eating lunch. Otherwise you look pro already ;-)
I believe you lose some sensors (if not all) in sport. If you're approaching a questionable tree/obstacle, kind of go wide, if possible, allowing the drone to accurately trace you. Also, the controller rigged onto your chest is a great idea.... I put mine in my backpack which wasn't a good idea (especially with sticks still attached)
@@gmbn To be honest I guess I placed it in a good position the first few times but I did have some suspect maneuvers and I realized it was probably the thumb sticks moving so I stopped doing it lol
Hello Neil..that's a good idea having drone to record yourself while riding. I also use drone when I ride my emtb to record my action and post it to my youtube channel. Hope to see your video in future using active track mode.
Oh man, why didn't you show the really interesting parts: riding trails in the woods. There are already lots of videos on drones tracking in the open, but not so much in the woods
As a drone operator all I'm going to input was there are some great shots/video in this, however - ensure you follow the CAA code at all times and VLOS is key. Technically you need to be fully in control while flying irrelevant of the mode you're in...but it's all a risk assessment and clear code from the CAA. Good stuff :)
If you are making money on your UA-cam videos, be sure you get your Part 107 Pilots License. Otherwise you risk MAJOR fines if you're found out. They are cracking down hard on unlicenced drone pilots using their drones for profit. Examples, UA-cam, real estate, etc. Either way, make sure to follow your local laws regarding safe drone flight. They are cracking down on rule breakers also. Good luck.
Drones and MTB is a GREAT combination!!! The husband from my sister has a lot of drones and he filmed me several times on dh sections/trails. GREAT shots were the results. Yes. My sister is old 😂 (she's 30) and I'm 16😐😂 (and the youngest of my family)
Yeah .. not where I live. There is dense tree cover everywhere. A drone has absolutely zero chance following through the brush. Most places you are lucky if can do a 4-5 minute descent without anything slapping you in the face or wrap around you ....
DJI needs an app that will allow you to control it via your phone. Slow speed basic maneuvering and “follow me” features should be available via phone without the remote. They can even set it to where if the link to the phone dies, the drone lands. That’s the future of drones anyway, so the sooner they do this the better.
I crashed my dji mavic pro (1st gen) into a tree on an island.. :( I had to swim to the island in my underwear and I wasn't really close to my homeplace
You can’t legally operate a drone while riding a bike or vehicle in the USA. You also have to have visual line of sight on the drone at all times, so unless you have a buddy filming you, those autonomous features still make you the pilot in command. Obviously the FAA doesn’t have the people to enforce the rules they created, but the rules still exist so post your videos publicly at your own risk.
Same in the uk 500m maximum away and maintain visual line of sight which isn’t possible if you are riding.basically need a second person doing the drone to do it all legally, depends on your attitude to the law really but I personally wouldn’t do it
@@CrazyBikerGuy thanks, I wasn’t aware of that. I would be interested to know their thoughts in relation to having suitable control of the drone if as in the video the controller is zip tied to a person whilst riding a bike meaning they cannot see the screen or access controls easily. It’s fine when nothing goes wrong but what happens when it does. I couldn’t personally see any court or insurer accepting it. Sounds melodramatic I know but it is the reality.
Before I watched this video I made a bet that it wouldn’t comply with current UK laws… safe to say I don’t owe you any cash Neil. 😉Even though the flying in this video was very low risk, as others have pointed out you did not follow the current regs on a number of counts. Unfortunately the laws at present are quite complex and as you are a big company operating commercially you really need to be whiter than white - please remember model flying in general is under huge scrutiny at this point as authorities attempt to legislate us all out of the air so that commercial operators can use the low level airspace (even though the tech is not ready for them to do that yet). All it would take would be a report of this video to the authorises and you could end up with a nasty knock on the door (yes it’s rare, but it does happen).
As posted he has both operators and commercial license. So I don't believe any law is broken...but please advise for all of us wanting to get one, what laws were transgressed.

Great footage and all that but ….. well, you know what I am getting at I’m sure.
@@nathanlenehan5507 the rules changed for commercial use just FYI you now dont need a PFCO what it was called i think its now a GVC, but you do need commercial insurance like you said and operator id etc
@@nathanlenehan5507 ahhh I didn't get an advert at the start that's why I said it. And it was strange there were none though out that's why I assumed they probably did it for that reason. Yeah totally forgot that he gets paid to be a presenter haha that would overall of that then! We have no idea of what permissions he has or doesn't but I guess caveats should be put into the video stating rules. I think your technically right in terms of sending the wrong message when it comes to legality. That said it shouldn't be that way really if you are just doing it for fun. Not saying you are but the drone police are the most detrimental to the industry and let's be honest most of the can't fly for shit
@@Jaycee2346 Its different from someone with next to none subscribers doing it for free for a bit of fun and a 663million company , Warner Bros - who owns gmbn- the worlds biggest and fastest growing mountain biking channel in the world. They have responsibility and influence and should be above water with the law and setting the example. I think we are agreeing on it 👍
I've got to get me one of these drones. ✌🏾
They're great fun to use! 👍
Yeah, sport mode disables all of the sensors. Putting the remote in your backpack must've made the drone go a bit crazy! 😂
@@gmbn To be honest I guess I placed it in a good position the first few times but I did have some suspect maneuvers and I realized it was probably the thumb sticks moving so I stopped doing it lol
Nice👍
that music for the last few shots sounds like Blake made it lol
so beautiful! where is it?
Mendip Hills, Somerset UK, I think.
Or could be Shropshire Hills (as Neil is from around there I believe).
@@rupedog pretty sure that's not the Mendips. I live there and don't recognise anything.
Hello Neil..that's a good idea having drone to record yourself while riding. I also use drone when I ride my emtb to record my action and post it to my youtube channel. Hope to see your video in future using active track mode.
Sheeeeeesh wish I had the budget for that
brilliant... would be great if you could get one and and it could follow you for a 3-4 hour ride without having to give it any thought...
That would be the dream! Unfortunately, the batteries only last around 25mins. 😅
3-4 hrs of 4k content makes for a very long workflow, also in a series of 20 minute flights.
Neil, I am surprised you bought it. You didnt get it sponsored from DJI?
In NY, it's not allowed to fly drone anywhere any time. Probably my yard is ok
Follow me is legal if within 50m of you. Point 35 of CAA drone guidelines.
Nice video, I should put drones on my channel
If you are making money on your UA-cam videos, be sure you get your Part 107 Pilots License. Otherwise you risk MAJOR fines if you're found out. They are cracking down hard on unlicenced drone pilots using their drones for profit. Examples, UA-cam, real estate, etc.
Either way, make sure to follow your local laws regarding safe drone flight. They are cracking down on rule breakers also.
Good luck.
Would be nice to of known if it would go lower through the tree lines or go above them and then lose you 😅
Hey Darren! They can fly really close to the ground, which is great for avoiding trees. Although, make sure no one is around that could get hurt! 😅
i wanna a small drone while i bike long distant to follow me and maybe rain proof
Drones and MTB is a GREAT combination!!! The husband from my sister has a lot of drones and he filmed me several times on dh sections/trails. GREAT shots were the results. Yes. My sister is old 😂 (she's 30) and I'm 16😐😂 (and the youngest of my family)
30....old! 🙄😵
Drones are great at getting sick shots of your riding! It's so cool to get a new perspective on how your riding looks from high up! 👍
I have a dji drone with my gvc license I will do drone footage for you 😉 😀
don't overlook the 180 pano still shot. they are easily shared and look great in maps. i get a few every launch to index the day.
I've heard drones work best around airports.
Yeah .. not where I live. There is dense tree cover everywhere. A drone has absolutely zero chance following through the brush. Most places you are lucky if can do a 4-5 minute descent without anything slapping you in the face or wrap around you ....
Hi Neil, check out DM productions on here, Darren knows everything drone and has some great vids. Keep up the good work buddy 😃
Do GMBN make you buy your own kit ??
Child boy scammer , get a man's job boy
DJI needs an app that will allow you to control it via your phone. Slow speed basic maneuvering and “follow me” features should be available via phone without the remote. They can even set it to where if the link to the phone dies, the drone lands. That’s the future of drones anyway, so the sooner they do this the better.
I crashed my dji mavic pro (1st gen) into a tree on an island.. :( I had to swim to the island in my underwear and I wasn't really close to my homeplace
You guys should try the Skydio 2+. It's a completely autonomous drone!
Same in Europe
Same in the uk 500m maximum away and maintain visual line of sight which isn’t possible if you are riding.basically need a second person doing the drone to do it all legally, depends on your attitude to the law really but I personally wouldn’t do it
I’m Italy you can with a drone < 500g an a distance < 50 m
@@davidwalley2926 Follow me is legal in the UK, point 35 in the rules of drone flying, forgot to add that in the previous comment. My apologies.
Nice
Thanks!
Should just build an fpv quad, cheaper ,faster and more durable/maneuverable and you can chase people down trails when you get good fuck dji
Make sure you do the bare minimum theory and get the i.d for it.
If you are getting paid for youtube videos and using a drone for footage, you need the part 107
For your purpose a skydio is better.
Nooo... please don't normalize drones at the trail system for the sake of ad revenue. Half the reason I get out on my bike is to be out in nature.
Global.how’s everythin ggoing?,you shared superb !
This guy is a good cautionary tale of what happens when you get it wrong…. ua-cam.com/video/tSud9mskhqE/v-deo.html
As posted he has both operators and commercial license. So I don't believe any law is broken...but please advise for all of us wanting to get one, what laws were transgressed.
fucking hell how many posts you made on this video already -- give it a rest bro
Skydio 2+ Beacon much simpler Neil
Nonsense! leave drone flying /filming to experienced people
Omg first??
🎉🤘🎉
Litchi 3rd party app to fly DJI follows the controller pretty good
