NCAA is Voting to Kill Expansion Big 12: Revenue Sharing Drops Iowa State, Houston, UCF and More

- Per reporting from Pete Thamel, sources indicate that the top-end revenue share number per school, once determined, would be approximately $20 million annually, although this remains unsettled. The leaders of college sports are involved in "deep discussions" to reach a legal settlement that would likely lay out the framework for sharing revenue with athletes in a future NCAA business model, sources told ESPN.
Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts recently told the Bryan-College Station Eagle that schools could be adding $15 million to $20 million to their budgets annually for what he termed a "new expense category" in college athletics. Whatever number is set by the settlement, individual schools will be able to opt in to share revenue up to that number with their student athletes at their discretion. (They could choose to share less, but not more.)
The NCAA and its power conferences are defendants in an antitrust class action lawsuit, House v. NCAA, which argues that the association is breaking federal law by placing any restrictions on how athletes make money from selling the rights to their name, image, or likeness. The case is scheduled to go to court in January 2025.

I blame this mess on ESPN…it is destroying college football with conference realignment.
You say that as if they forced the school you're a fan of. To take their money.
I blame the NCAA. The reason this is happening is because college football has no leadership. If the NCAA wasn't completely inept then this wouldn't be happening.
What I don't understand is when you see this break up that may occur how it doesn't trigger Sherman Antitrust enforcement
Leaving the majority of schools out of this makes the power 2 a monopoly, and the house would get involved with anti-trust issues with the power 2. The Power 2 must share the wealth with the rest of FBS, or face more legal actions.
Having the SEC and B10 face anti-trust regulations is my dream. Stopping the top teams from banding together and crushing the remainder to prevent competition is the exact scenario the spirit of these laws was written with.
You mean that same house that has been railing against socialism? 😂😂😂
Maybe College sports becomes the Yankees and Dodgers compared to the Oakland A’s and Miami Marlins, but there have always been have and have nots. Look at Ohio State and Michigan football compared to Minnesota and Indiana. That however does not make it an anti~trust issue.
@@davidbrown386 What team is in the top 5 with the most wins since 2000 that is not in a P2? Boise State,, what you have is leaving out a lot of states that could kill their economy for the state and cities that the other teams are in.
No one is going to do anything about it. The networks run the sport now. They stick their arms up the ass of the sec and b1g to work their mouths like a puppet.
They will do anything to try keep Houston non relevant. But if your from Houston you know why. If you are not from Houston you don't have a clue to what I'm saying.
So explain it.
@@ChaseEagleback Houston was so dominant at its entry to the Southwest Conference ( primarily because of the recruiting advantage it had by being in the city of Houston but also because of other factors such as being the first university in Texas to play black kids and the fact that it was the hottest job market in the U.S. It simply had too many advantages coming into a sharp focus point and that didn't sit well with a lot of people who had the power to slow things down. Unfortunately there were also UH people that took every opportunity to shoot themselves in the foot.
Sequel to recruiting advantage: When all of those other things were happening in Houston....the space program was "sexy as hell" and America's attention was just as focused on Houston and NASA as it is focused today on New York and the Trump trial or the mess at Columbia. Houston was "hot" in all the right ways.
In order to save the village we had to destroy it-- ncaa
Each P4 team receives revenue sharing of $30-60 Million/year. What are these schools doing with this money every year? They are spending every dollar and overextending beyond this budget - not to pay for football, but the entire athletics program.
I don't get how they are blowing through this much money, and still begging alumni for more donations.
Blowing it on non revenue sports. If this happens. Then most schools will ax all non revenue sports saving each school millions of dollars every year. With the ncaa powerless as well most schools will no longer recognize title 9 and women’s college sports will go by the wayside.
@@skylersadventures All true. They are also blowing money on brand new hall of fame museums, indoor training pools, etc. OH, and tons of expensive administrators.
@goodnerarts1206 Stanford has 18,369 administrators and 17,529 students .....Apparently, it takes a lot of administration to manage an endowment larger than the GDP of half the nations on the planet. They sure aren't dealing with the insurectionists, they must be on summer vay kay already.
@@MichaelSmith-xb5cp 😆😆
😂😂😂😂there is no longer a P4. It is a P2.
This kind of thinking is crap. I’m so sick of the “We are better than you” attitudes of the SEC and B1G.
The reality is we were all on a pretty equal playing fields until the biggest brands were stolen from us and the PAC. And pretty much any Big XII team could compete with the majority of each conference still.
😂😂😂😂
I want the Big XII to survive and thrive. The conference has never been more interesting than it is right now - a true "parity" conference of schools who are almost universally fun to watch. I am ambivalent on the plan to pay players - they deserve money but I don't think the plan should be designed in such a way so as to basically destroy all but maybe 40 or so schools.
😂😂😂 you said the Big 12 was interesting. Thanks for starting my day with a laugh.😂😂😂
If Louisville joins the B12, I will welcome a yearly Cardinal Clash between Iowa State and Louisville. The winner makes a video of their mascot body slamming the other team's mascot. Cy the Cardinal vs Louis the Cardinal. Mano e mano!
As a Louisville fan I support that.
You might want to keep a close eye on Cy. Remember Iowa State is both a cardinal and cyclone (tornado). If Cy morphs into a tornado it's going to create some problems.
WVU - Pitt will be a restored rivalry. Louisville - Cincy seems like a natural rivalry than the faux Cardinal match.
Dont most schools keep their academic & athletic department monies fenced in separate pots?
Not sure raising tuition is appropriate pot to pay.
They absolutely should be separate including admin. Athletic department should also be paying rent for all school owned real estate (stadiums, fields, practice facilities, etc)
The 1987 NFL players strike killed my enthusiasm for NFL football. At that time I went on strike against the NFL and I've been on strike ever since. Interestingly, I don't feel like I've missed a thing. I don't watch or buy anything NFL so my money doesn't support their bloated salaries. I've even weaned myself off of the NBA. College became my go to for football and basketball. Sadly, college football is beginning to kill my enthusiasm too. If college football or basketball players ever go on strike I'll be done forever. Maybe sooner.
Well said Bob!!!! If my team and its relevant opponents didn't matter.....if I had only Big 10 or SEC games to watch....I might as well just watch Hallmark movies.
Why should Cincy have to pay their former athletes the same as Ohio State? Why is UH paying the same as Texas? It is already established that those big brands are worth far more than the middle weights. They get way more TV money than the middle weights. So why do they all have to pay their former athletes the same?
BYU will have to raise tuition by $400 per semester.
Yes, and that is with 30,000+ students. Can you imagine the hit that smaller schools will take?
Jamie Pollard is the best AD in the league. He has also made great hires who routinely beat Gene Taylor’s great hires. 🤷🏻♂️😁
Agreed
Sounds like a restraint of trade case that will cost mega bucks in Attorney fees.
I’d rather see the BIG12 & ACC break off and do there own thing. The TV Networks ,BIG10 and SEC are killing college football for the most part but if I’m being truthful this generation of kids have done the most damage. With the me me me it’s all about me mentality.
The college landscape and NIL is ridiculous! Last I heard the NFL's base salary is $400,000. Why should college athletes get more then that? All the athletes should get the same and stop all this shopping around for the best price.
2024 minimum for an NFL rookie is 795 grand. If you have one year experience, it’s 915 grand minimum. Blue bloods can match that but the big12 can’t for sure. Big12 is a group of 5 with lifts in their shoes. Facts
REVENUE: Let s sample a few d1 2024 annual revenues for all sports.....
#1 TEXAS $200M for all sports
NOTRE DAME $175M
UGA $170M
MICHIGAN $153M
BAMA $147M
DUKE $126M
FSU $100M
CLEMSON $94M
UNC $88M
BAYLOR $78M
Stanford $76M
VANDY $69M
VA TECH $67M
Go to college Raptor to see what type of sports revenue your school collects.....
No Virginia Tech's head coach is Brent Pryor who used to be at Penn State and they're going through Growing Pains trying to fix the issues that Puente did now in basketball they've been pretty damn good women's basketball has been lights out this year
The “last pure college tradition” idea makes no sense. If the Big 12 can’t afford to keep up with the SEC/Big Ten, it’s much more likely they’d follow suit at a lower amount.
Whoa! What do you know about Gene Taylor that no one else does? The consensus in MHK is that he went to bat for the athletic dept but got shut down by Linton. He and Tang got closer.
Keep college football pure
Just goes to show you how much the Big 12 is missing Texas right about now.
This guy is too full of himself. Robbie who
Can we get a look at the NIL deal Robbie signed?
Love Rob’s attitude towards Big 12 competitive position.
If they can’t afford it, they should just not do it. Play with what ya got.
Boy does this guy have the ACC dead and buried.
Well it's only a matter of time. FSU, Clemson, UNC, Duke, and Miami are looking to get out
@@wesleyowens4089 They can want out all they want. If the Big 2 does not call, it won't matter. But I do think FSU and Clemson will be out, at the very least. We'll see.
WVU alum opinion: VA Tech is a good fit geographically, along with Pitt. Louisville and Cindy are geographic rivals so good fit. GA Tech brings in Atlanta TV market. UVA would be a better fit in Big 10.
Not all 5 star players pan out alot are busts
Prioritizing basketball over media market seems silly.
Do G5 teams also have to pay 20 million a year?
If tuition is raised one dime so some knuckledragger can play football there will be hell to pay. "So son, your school is up to it's eyeballs in debt because someone decided that semi pro football players should be paid. You gotta take out a bigger loan."
ESAD with that. They better get better security.
No Stanford/Cal???
Business mondel...
Why are institutions that main focus is education... are trapped into being a big time sports league
This interview is too much of a homie
So even though you acknowledge that football is the driving force you choose Gonzaga over Va tech because you don't know what they bring? I know by virtue of having football they'd bring in more that Gonzaga. They also have a rivalry with Wvu. I even think it's a trophy game. Likewise with Louisville and Cincy being rivals.
WVU v. Va Tech has the Black Diamond Trophy.
Bswview has the best fan base
ALL THE TEAMS WITH BIG EAST TIES!! WVU has rivalries with virtually all of them!
Texas has ruined every conference they have ever been in. The Big 12’s only hope is Texas ruins the SEC…
Always blame Texas. Same old refrain, over and over and over, again.
Chad, get some fresh material. Find some new boogyman. Blame Trump or Biden. Blame ESPN, ABC, CBS, Fox, or NBC.
Texas is one member of the new SEC. One vote.
FYI, OU left the Big XII and went to the SEC, along with Texas.
You mention the Pitt vs WV rivalry but Pitt is rivals with Cincy also, it’s called the River City Rivalry.
Recipe for diaster I smell lawsuits abound if they try to do this
Just an FYI as a newbie to the Big12, and never being picked as a bride but always a bridesmaid, Cincinnati has more going on for it than you or most realize! First of all we now can, and are finally getting some of the talent that has traditionally been going to other power 5 schools, and with an alumni that spans 100+ years and a student population reaching 50K this academic year and projected 60K by 2030 it's a school that's been growing in leaps and bounds since going public right before I started there in 1977. Those numbers alone put us in the upper echelon of US Universities, and while I heard you talk about money coming into the school from past years sports teams, I expect that to expand as well especially in a good size market with many good local Corps as Cincy has. You heard it first right here, UC is a quiet giant that has been kept out of the Big10 by Ohio St (1+1/2 hour north), and the SEC by Kentucky (1+1/2 hour south), and others in the ACC and Big East etc, but we've had really good rivalries in the recent past with Pitt, and Louisville, WV and UConn etc., so there is no doubt in my mind that UC will be on a level playing field with all the others in the Big12 very soon. Will we be a top money school? That will be determined soon, but with a sub 45K Football stadium it might take a little more time, but we're selling it out on a regular basis, and when we're winning we're tough to beat at home. 40K sounds like 100K inside our 100yr old stadium! The future is bright here in Cincy where we make headlines as one of the best destinations to get a college degree with our 100K+ college students annually from schools like UC, Xavier, NKU, Miami OH, Dayton etc., and for history buffs we're still building on our one time designation as the 3rd largest city in the nation, and home to 5 US Presidents!!! What was once old is New Again!
The only scenario where byu loses out on the #1 recruit in the nation is this Mickey Mouse B.S. lol
How is this “Purest form of college football “ going to make this work?
I think this isn’t going to happen…
WHAT Does Virginia Tech bring in football? Are you actually serious football analysts? VATech is one of only about 15 teams that has won four Power conference Championship trophies in the last quarter century.....Here's how many teams in this summer's B12 that have won 4 power chips in 25 years....ZERO. ....perhaps TEXAS could be still included for a few more days... They've also won just 4.
Well Baylor and k-state have 3. Utah has 2 and has only been power 5 for 12 years. And BYU hasn't had the opportunity to even compete
@@wesleyowens4089 Baylor and KSU each have 3 this century...but no B12 team has 4 or more after TX and OK split. I think OK St has 1. By contrast USC, Stanford, Oregon, Washington all have at least 4, plus every other PAC school had at least 1 or at least played in the champ game once. UTAH only earned their 2nd PAC title on a technicality, a rigged tiebreaker that prevented the historically stronger Northern Champion from playing in the conference champ game. Had USC not raised such a ruckus and getting the divisions eliminated, the north champion would have been in UTAH's spot for one of those seasons.. The north was essentially penalized for beating up on each other thet season, thereby letting two south teams play for the title. The essential point is that winning 4 titles in 25 years under the old POWER 5 was quite rare for non-Blue bloods, and I think VA Tech is being a bit overlooked simply because they have been overshadowed by Heisman quarterbacks on other ACC teams.
Hey Big 12, not only was the A.C.C. better than you in basketball but baseball also. They are breaking up the wrong conference.
They already broke up the big 12? Congrats you're better than the leftovers now let's see how that holds when it's you're leftovers vs the big 12's
“What does Virginia Tech bring in football terms?” Wow, maybe have somebody on that’s over 35 years old, That has a little bit of history of just 20 years ago.?!! Just a bit of research here they played for national championship 25 years ago and they have four ACC championships in the span of seven years from 2004 to 2011!
Yes, it’s been hard times for last 4 to 5 years, but look out this year!
Collegiate football is a business. It has been for a long time.
Robbie T, don’t give me this Big XII purist crapola.
Iowa State can afford it. They made 111M last year.
$114mil is what they made. $111mil was their total costs. That's barley breaking above even but not bad when most power conference schools end up in the hole.
Now you know why CyTown was put into motion. Folks that think ISU will be out, don’t have a clue.
They virtually would be paying all tv revenue to athletes. I doubt brands like TCU & Utah would agree to the big 12 venturing off and doing there own thing. They’ll join the big ten @ a reduce rate before they agree to those terms.
Kansas Texas Tech Oklahoma st and probably ASU and BYU are no votes as well
@@davidbrown386.... BYU could afford it, but they won't pay it.
None of them are getting accepted into the B1G or the sec. I say this as a big 12 fan but it's obvious they didn't bring enough value. Maybe Kansas solely based off basketball. There is still huge brands in the acc and ND that are next on the list
Add Texas State to the big 12
Are u nurs or just plain stupid?
The Big 12 is not getting North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Virginia, or Miami period........ maybe not even Duke
No ACC team ever join the Big or sec...not enough value in any of them😂
@@frontRunn3r587FSU, Clemson, North Carolina, and Miami add value to the B1G or the SEC.
@@Patrick-sg7cm hate to burst your fan fiction bubble, but its been said many times by people in the business, including consulting firms, that there is not enough money to expand. Fsu and clemson simply are not big enough.
Its funny because the message is loud and clear, however people just refuse to listen.
@frontRunn3r587 If that's the case, then why are FSU and Clemson trying so hard to desperately get out of the ACC if they have no where to go? If they know there is no chance of landing in the SEC or the B1G, they wouldn't be spending millions in attorney fees trying to exit the ACC.
Because Virginia Tech is so good and valuable 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Bye bye Big 12 well except Oklahoma State, Utah, Kansas, Kansas State, and Arizona 😆
Currently the Colorado show market is their biggest brand & the big-12 fanatics hates them the Most...lol.
Arizona State has to be with Arizona because Arizona as the Flagship alone doesn't even have the Phoenix Market.
And you left Iowa State out of this why? Do you really think $1M is going to stop schools from continuing? Most schools have donors that would pay that $1M in a heartbeat if it threatened their Alma Mater from competing on the gridiron.
Munus Arizona because they are in debt, and add Texas Tech.
There are a lot more schools than that who will pay up. And, there will be some ACC schools going the Big XII if F$U is successful in leaving. Dominoes will again fall.
Will they get the top schools leaving, probably not, but the big two aren't taking them all.
There's no way ASU is going away
