  • Recruits of Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, arrive at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.
Recruits arrive at Parris Island late at night and are immediately thrust into the stressful whirlwind of in-processing, platoon assignment, haircuts, uniform and gear issue and medical evaluations. They would also have an opportunity to make their first phone call home. This is the last time they'll talk to their families for three months.

God I hated the barbers on PI. They tell you to specify if and where you have birthmarks, etc on your head, ostensibly to avoid cutting them, yet they still managed to draw blood every single time…

Two guys in front of me had shoulder length hair drill Sargent's and barbers rode their asses up one side and down the other. I though I was good as I had a buzz cut. Nope, they rode my ass for messing with government property. It was 1975 who knew?

That was my answer going before Sergeant (E-5) (0351) promotion board, which lasted 2 minutes and I was done and promoted the next day.
