WHAT WENT WRONG?? | GERMAN NATIONALS GLIDING DAY 6 | VLOG² 7

- What went wrong at competition day 6 of the German Nationals in club class gliding? In this video I try to explain my thoughts in commantary, so you and I can learn out of it. At day 6 I placed 19th of 44, which was my worst daily scoring. But luckily it was not a big deal for the overall scoring.

Another excellent video and so good for training others. Airspeed, altitude, and vario were able to be seen most of the time which collectively give an idea on how to do it. Thermals taken and those passed up were instructional, together with written commentary on decisions made. You are making a real contribution to soaring everywhere for those of us who don't venture beyond the home field.
What a gorgeous video Stefan. I have a thousand hours plus on gliders, but for a variety of reasons, have not flown for eighteen years now. I was right there in the cockpit with you! Thankyou and stay safe.
Please use this style of comments in the future too, if not using voice while flying
Thank you for your comment! :)
I like this very much, Stefan! As a beginning cross-country pilot I can learn so much from your videos. Please keep this up.
Thank you, I will try!
weiter so
Vielen Dank!
Gr8 video, this style of commentary is really helpful in understanding more about the flight & the background in which it takes place. Definitely worth continuing
Thank you!
Great way os describing your flight, keep doing that way! Wish you nice cloudstreets at the final glide!!
Comment style is great. I like it.
Again, I always enjoyed it to watch your videos. Learning by watching for a beginner like me 😉
Thank you!
Stefan Langer
Beautiful flight and fascinating to watch. It looked like everything went OK. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, everything went ok, but not perfect ;)
This video brought back a lot of good memories from my active time as a glider pilot. I owned this Standard Cirrus from 1992 to 2004. Loved it very much and made my largest flights of 535 km on it back in 96. Cockpit obviously had a major upgrade. It had an LX4000 back then.
Thank you for another incredible video! The touch points are very helpful and I'm sure some of your viewers will learn from them. Cheers!
I agree, I like it more when you explain what you do and how you ommunicate with your buddy. This glider is noisy in the cockpit. But I always enjoy your videos
Stefan, Superb Pilot, Superb Videos, THANK YOU!!
I'm so envious of your thermal conditions! Loved the video!
Thank you! Yes, the thermal condions were ok at the beginning, but improved a lot during the flight. I expected these better conditions from the end also at the beginning... And other pilots already had the better condions on the first leg to the turnpoint.
Thanks for sharing. Very interesting to see all your thoughts during the race. Really enjoyed watching this.
Great!
Thanks for sharing! Enjoy every flight Comments are appreciated as it adds to your decision process
Wahnsinn, mega gut gemacht. Gerne mehr Videos dieser Art ;)
Toll, das freut mich ;)
Very interesting and lots of learning. I enjoy this type of video.
Great!
Nice final score- great to see your thoughts- if you get time maybe show on a map, the course and your course ....of course
Thanks for sharing the flight and explaining the details! Danke :)
Gerne! :)
A great video. Brought back memories of my days flying an Open Cirrus in competition. What was the red flashing lights in the center of the instrument panel? Anti collision warning?
Great video. I’m just learning and I really enjoy your gliding. Thank you.
Awesome, loved it! Feels like I am getting hooked again after some 30 years!😄
well made video. great flying, glider planes are so cool
Very nice film. Like the reflections showing the thought process. Still curious as to what your conclusion was. Just an off-day where too often you were at the short end of the stick or could you distill something more from it. To me it looked like a nice flight. An other question: were the other pilots your companions just for the day or part of your team-fly group?
I think the start position was not perfect. I should have crossed the start line some kilometers more to the east because the thermals were better there, but also the wind was blowing from a eastern direction. The second problem was, that I should have taken the time at one of the first thermals to get to the cloudbase, even if the climbrate was not as good as I expected. Because of the mid height flying I had less options where to fly and made bigger detours, which also cost time. And the thermals improved at higher heights. Then at the first turnpoint I spend too much time in the weak thermals, but on the other side it reduced the risk of an outlanding. The second half of the flight was between ok and good. Tobi was just for the second half of this flight my team mate. He flew this competition with an other team mate, who made an outlanding at this day. All other days I flew on my own.
Stefan....good to see you flying again. We love flying with you.. Also we like this type of comments it helps in the translation. Also were able to understand what your thinking as you maneuver
Great, thank you!
Awesome video ! I'd love to fly a glider once !
Flying gliders is awesome and a lot more fun than flying "usual" powered planes ;)
Hi Stefan, Found this very interesting, My only gliding experience and flat field radio control. I was a little surprised by the quite extreme bank angle in light thermals. Suppose that is the balance between keeping max wing area (flat) and keeping in thermal?
love this style, keep it up.. literally :-)
Thank you :-)
Hallo Stefan,
Fantastic! Thanks. With love, Ken
I liked it for all of us english speaking voyeur glider pilots its the only way to go.
what is the red LED and chirp for?
FLARM
Beeps when you’re on course to hit something and the red/green LEDs are arranged in a circle to indicate where the other glider is
Yes, it´s the Flarm collision avoidance device, which is mandatory in competition flying in Germany and also very common in all gliders.
Man! This sooo frigging cool!! Reminds me of my time gliding many many years ago. The frustration of getting low looking for thermals and the sheer excitement if you find one. Performance of these modern machines is unbelievable! As well as the instrumentation. Did I see a standard Libelle? And did you fly with water ballast thermalling at 100?
Hey Stefan, I think you got a good balance of in flight talk / subtitle, music and inside cockpit sounds. I take it that alarm going off was the flarm?
Yes, the alarm is the Flarm collision avoidance device. But when flying in a gaggle, it does not really help. It´s more annoying.
It is really interesting and helpful to know your thinking behind the decisions you make when flying. Thanks.
I think I quit flying too soon. This is great. Never went up without a motor myself.
what was the red flashing light? Great video I own an Ultralight Challenger II it will glide but on 14/1 l/d Thanks
FLARM it detects other aircrafts in your area (if they are also using it)
Great commentary
Looks just like soaring in western Oregon. These skinny Weiner thermals make you sweat for each 100' of gain.
Never flew there :/
What are those high-pitched beeps? I know about the vario noises, but not those
FLARM en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLARM
good job on both the fly and the video
Perfect balance!
Hallo,
I liked the written comments
I’m not surprised the thermals were so scrappy. It looks like the cloud tops were very close to an isothermal layer preventing further vertical growth. I bet people who flew in a lower average operating band went faster.
The thermals were not all scrappy. Other pilots managed to fly very fast speeds...
A bit too late to comment, but I loved it. I just want to add if you could just quickly highlight what's each of the gages tells you at the beginning of the video so novice people like me can make sense of what you are looking at, it would be great. Halfway through the video I was able to figure (most of them) out.
More work I know, but on-screen "pointers" would help us understand where you are looking to other planes, thermals, turnpounts. Etc.
Why don't you mark the high fast beep tone locations on your map every time you hear one, and then you'll have several points on the map you can fly around to try and figure out the circle you should fly to connect them all
I love the fact you do sometimes my same mistakes. :)
Hello Stefan! What are Thermals and how do they help gliders?
Hello Manuel! Thermals are areas of rising air. We glider pilots use thermals to gain altitude and then make distance.
As an RC pilot I love my gliders.I'd love to get in a twin seater with an instructor and have a fly.I think it would be fantastic.I've been flying for more than 30 years so I don't think I'd have to much problem.just take off and landing would be best left to the professionals.
Love it! I just can’t keep still in my seat as you make different decisions to those I would have made! The only critique I’d dare make is that you seem to like turning left in thermals as a preference and twice turning right would have put you right in the middle. Great video, keep them coming...
Thank you for the input. I don´t know exactly if I turned left because I want to or if it there were other gliders around me.
Very entertaining!
what's the beeping and red LEDs? Collision avoidance system?
Yes, FLARM
In California at Crestline the hang glider pilots are known to fly over and follow the freight trains decending the mountain. The heat given off of the engines using engine breaking provides some lift on stable days.
Nice! But this was absolutely no stable day..
@@SteFly Just saying.
This makes me long for my younger days!Have not flown in 25 years, so what is "MC"?
MC number
MacCready Theory -- In the early 1950's, Paul MacCready proposed that the best
speed to fly between thermals is that speed indicated by the polar based on the
expected rate of climb in the next thermal.
What kind of Shempp-Hirth glider? Nimbus?
No, it´s a Std. Cirrus with winglets ;)
Hi and @first thanks for uploading this video. I enjoyed watching it 👍🏼 and it was pretty good explained.
Just for short a few questions in german language:
Vielleicht
"Fall & Schirm?" 😆sorry, der flache Joke musste jetzt raus. ✌🏼.
(Ich tippe mal auf "guten Flug?!)
Jetzt aber ernsthaft.
#1: Hat man einen Notfallschirm?
(Würde mich echt interessieren).
#2: Warum sind eigentlich gefühlt 99% aller Segelflugzeuge weiß lackiert? Gibt es da einen historischen Hintergrund o. ähnliches?
With kindest regards 🤙🏼‼️
Hi, vielen Dank!
Top echt!!! 😆‼️
Will you make an q&a ?
Should I do? What do you want to ask?
@@SteFly yeah, we will ask you some question about yourself, your project.... to know you better 😉
what is that red light with beeping that occasionally goes on?
@Christopher Nolan flarm.com
Würde also vielleicht schon was bringen, wenn man weiß etwas „kälter“ stellt.
5600 wäre ja normales Tageslicht, also mal 6000 oder 7000 probieren.
Some days the Pigeon some days the Statue .....
Hi!! Very good video as always but allow a bit of more time to read your comments, please!!
Thank you, I will display the comments for a longer time in the next videos.
I love that song at 9:50
Comments are great if not speaking English while flying. Would be nice to know what you placed in that task.
Like written in the description of the video, I placed 19th out of 44. So not good, but also not as bad as an outlanding. It was enough to keep place one in the overall ranking because other competitiors also made failures.
what does this flex do?
Which flex?
Thanks
Ist das deine Schleichi?
Kar keine Wölbklappen benutzt, wundert mich ..
Nein, ein Std. Cirrus
i think you were flying too fast in the thermal
i mean in some thermals i think you fly a little to fast
G'day Stefan! You gonna be at WGAC2019?
No, I won´t be there. I´m more focused on cross country gliding competitions.
Oh well, that's kind of unfortunate to hear
All I hear is people complaining about the lack of thermals...
Heck, head for Minden....
niice
A very enjoyable video except for the "music". Please lose the music from your future videos.
In my opinion it is strange not to have any sound when I replay time lapses...
Click bait.
Talking voice is better for me.
