Hi I'm the owner, I'd like to thank Dave for the great work, the Joe Barden really gives it a nicer tone to my ears possibly due to the brass saddles. I'm using this as a jazz guitar but the twang gives it that tele vibe when you dial that specific tone. This guitar has all American components, the reason it has MX in the serial number is because around 1997 the new mexico plant opened and the USA fender paint plant got shut down for not following EPA rules. This led to them shipping the bodies to the new plant in mexico to be painted hence MX/ made in USA combination on the headstock. These were known as the California series and they ran from 1997-1999. Thanks!

I had one just like it, did not say California Series but because of the reasons you listed above it was the same. Neck was a little on the thin side but a great quality tele.

Aren't they great ? Teles take me back to when I was a kid playing hookey from school and heading for the city to where the big music stores were, Harry Landis, Nicholson's Palings and drooling over the guitars locked behind glass doors. The one that stuck in my mind was the Pink Paisley Telecaster. Now I'm an old man and had many Teles the well worn path has led me to G&L Leo's last Telecaster design. The Commemorative Edition #17 of 350 doesn't sound like a Telecaster but it feels like one and if I want, the Magnetic Field Design pups can easily be tweaked to sound like one but I won't do that. I've got a couple of Mick Brierley custom made pups that will fit nicely into a Fender Telecaster body when it arrives. I can't stay away from them.

Gotta say i love me some Fender guitars and basses. i see that tele with the black one-ply pickguard and i just want to play some music on it. But don't be crapping on Mexican Fenders. i've got a cheapo Indonesian Squier Jaguar bass that is better than its $250 price tag. Move up a level to those lower Fender models and you get a damn fine piece of gear for the price. Back when i started playing i bought a Univox Precision for $150 in 1984 money. That was a canoe paddle for real.

Fender makes and installs an updated ashtray bridge on thier professional series teles. Its about 80 dollars and its better than a Callahan and less expensive. I mention it because it has the screws in the corners like that one however it has the compensated saddles like a Callahan.

As just a viewer of pretty much all of your stuff for years, I am surprised (perhaps alarmed is a better word) that I can now tell just from the video that when you insert a 12-thou feeler gauge, it is either too high or too low. And yes, I can even see the "not gonna mess with that" stuff.
You're a bad influence! (Just kidding, and I still enjoy these romps through guitar repair and alignment.)

I don't think you can beat the old Fender 3-barrel brass for tone. They sound thick and meaty compared to almost anything else. People make too big a deal out of intonation. I mean, think about it; everyone from Roy Buchanan to Danny Gatton and Jerry Donahue used them with no problems. So do I. And acoustic guitars usually just have a single saddle. People stay in tune just fine with them.

10:46 the compensated design works well.
With more or less elegance some guys have been filing their own saddles to fine-tune since Tele-immemorial.
Three barrels will never flip on you no matter how hard you hit it and string tension over the saddles is divided at one string per height screw rather then two screws. A very slight matter for sure, here's what I found:
Between a filed Tele three barrel, a G&L six barrel and a partscaster six barrel, I like the bridges in that same order. The last one loads further off centre than the G&L and constantly flipped the high E over. The G&L never flips and feels somehow smoother than the solid snap I like in the three barrel. Not changing that G&L though, it's got it's own wonderful mojo going on.
Six or three, both good for me!
