- During the 1996 Australian Open, 19 year old, Mark Philippoussis walked onto Centre Court in Melbourne with nothing to lose. His opponent was the number one player in the world at the time, Pete Sampras. With skill, power and youth on his side, Mark stamped his name and game onto the world of tennis.
Sat front row as an 11 year old and loved every minute of this match...

I seen Mark practicing in Brisbane in 1999 his forehand was so loud it sounded like thunder going off never seen anyone hit the ball so hard especially just practicing incredible
Seeing this brings back memories of a time, when tennis was a game of four distinct surfaces, not the generic sport it now is. Philippoussis was a very good power player, who set a new fastest serve record, and here he put on a great show of his strength.
Did Philipousis hold the record? I know Rusedski had it for 143mph when Philipousis hit one at 142mph, and then 149mph a year later, which was the fastest for quite a few years.
Quite intriguing at 6:22 is the side by side serve comparison. Sampras is already into a split step by the time Philippoussis is still finishing his service motion through. That Sampras serve is still the greatest motion in tennis history.
If you look at old film of Pancho Gonzales' service motion you can see a striking similarity to Sampras'.
That´s not a split. Sampras lands on his left foot and starts running to the net, the split will come later. The difference I see is also on the right leg kick, Phillipoussis has a bigger one (the one every coach on internet teaches you) and Sampras is almost inexistent. Phillipousis jump (Pete jumps lower) is higher and takes him more into the court than Pete´s. Pete´s motion is 100% efficient. But you are right, by the time Pete gives his first step forward with his right foot, Mark is still landing on his left foot.
Pete's kick serve in this match was amazing. Mark's forehand was also nothing to mess with.

It's an interesting tidbit that Sampras's losses in the first three majors of the 1996 season came without breaking serve once. Philippoussis only broke Sampras once, Krajicek did it just twice, but that was enough. Pete was in quite an emotional slump and turmoil at the time, but turned it around like a true champ at the USO and TMC.

Mark was the greatest tennis player on that one great day! Most talanted player never to win a Grand Slam??? Hands down! Right up there with Henry Leconte and Marcello Rios.

Tomas Berdych could be on that list. One of the cleanest hitters on tour, on both wings. Just didnt have the killer instinct like the modern greats AKA the BIG3
Absolutely, he was unlucky to have been born in the freakish era of Roger, Rafa & Novak.
Berydch, Tsonga and Ferrer would have probably won a few grand slams if you didn't peak at the same time the big 4 were peaking and in every semifinal together.

How could I ever forget this match, I was 16 and dad and his mates dropped acid trips and were falling off there chairs every time the scud hit an ace, hilarious night and got the result
Wow, what an interesting home life you must've had. I can't even imagine something like that with my father. Back then, though, how could anyone not be blown away by the awesome power of the Scud? It was incredible watching him dismantle Pistol Pete but I'm glad you had a good night way back when and I'm glad you enjoyed revisiting that time while watching the video. I'm astounded at the number of times these two players met in grand slams. Sampras beat Philippoussis at Wimbledon and the US Open. Mark had the upper hand over Pete at the Australian Open as well as Roland Garros.
Well technically mark had won set 1 vs Pete at Wimbledon in 1999 6-4 but had to retire due to a freak injury. As Pete said, he was lucky since he was getting his butt whipped

It's interesting how Sampras could have problems with big servers at times (Krajicek and Stich both had winning head to heads against him)
Ivanisevic also had a number on him early in in his career.
Fast surfaces of the 90s made those kind of players very, very dangerous.
Most players had problems with those guys on the fast courts back then :)

That was a very impressive win. And in the very next round Philippoussis got completely dismantled by Mark Friggin' Woodforde of all people. Unbelievable. I was so excited to see him against Becker but Woodforde had a different idea.

Yeah and in spite of the excuses that were made regarding the reasons for his defeat, (like emotional problems, life was difficult at the time, he was surrounded by thousands of Australian fans on an Australian court, etc, etc. etc,) still the number one player in the world got smashed and it was achieved by a nineteen year old with exceptional power, skills and talent. High kudos to a Scud that blew a Pistol off the court.
Sort of true. However, there was Hewitt and Saffin in the finals of the US open. They crushed him badly. And Sampras redoubled his efforts the following year and beat Agassi.

He did get outplayed twice in 1996 in similar fashion, this one and then Krajicek at Wimbledon. Very rare outside clay if he was playing well, but to their credit, both Flips and Krajicek played unbelievable.

John Alexander such a perfect commentator, strong male voice but very calm which is needed when watching tennis, you are concentrating and you dont want too much loud outburst. Sometimes its appropriate but John Alexander is right up there alongside Jason Goodall as best commentators in tennis.

What i like about tennis vs football is that there isnt any corruption in tennis. Also no one fakes injuries and broken bones in tennis and no one rolls around the floor during tennis matches and if they do they arent faking injuries.
Tennis is the more sophisticated intelligent crowd whereas football is a simple sport for working class. And thats what makes both sports do wonderful. Sometimes you just wqnt straightforward football and other times you want a deep complicated clean no cheating sport like tennis.
There were only two players that could hurt Pete in this particular way back then but they had to be completely on. Phillipousis and Kraijcek, but I think in particular Phillipousis because of the massive weaponry and power.
Yeah, Pete certainly didn't enjoy the big servers and power hitters even when he was at his best. He may have beaten them at times but he didn't like playing them at all. Mark at his best was exceptional and could beat anyone on a good day.

Gosh even back the they punished us with as many ads as posssible, first game finished after only 1 minute. I cant watch tennis with ads and all grand slam rights are with home nation broadcasters who adore ads. Why cant we just pay $15 for the right to watch the tournant without ads.

Philippoussis makes me think of the lead singer from the Thompson Twins band - singing the song "Lay your hands on me" lol 🤣 The passion, verve and determination he showed against Sampras reminds me a lot of said qualities being used to great effect by the lead singer shouting "lay your hands on me!" repeatedly in a TV show called Razzmatazz (which used to air in the 1980s) 😊
It really hard to comprehend how did Pete loss here and in Wimbledon against Krajchek,he hadn’t any health issues as he had in 1999,was clearly a better player,but he was a true champion and always had his way to come back stronger,as he did in 1996 and 2002 US Opens,still think if not for thalassemia B he would have won 3-4 Slams more.
Hi Alek, I don't think it is so hard to comprehend. Pete said in those days that he hated playing big servers and power players. All players have their Achilles heel and that was his. Laver, McEnroe, Federer, Nadal - everyone gets beaten and their record is never what they hope it will be. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Pete was dealing with the illness and consequent passing of his coach/mentor/friend. You could really tell he was struggling with it at times. But Philippoussis was also an incredible player, one of the best hard-hitters at the time. No shame he lost here.
The Thalasemia 100% had a very negative impact at Roland Garros because he had to put together two gruelling weeks on clay
. People don’t really know that Pete was actually a very good clay court player , he beat every single French Open winner of that era on clay , including his rival Agassi which he has a winning career head to head on clay .
Problem was he just couldn’t do it for 2 weeks but not because of what many many think, was 100% a endurance issue . Being the champion that he was he never ever admitted to having the disease until after he retired .
Different era, both Scud and Krajicek were far superior to any of the dark horses you have today because their style of game could work with the balls and surfaces around.
Sampras was a brilliant player (the best I have ever seen) but tennis was nowhere close to the same professional week in week out grind. By consequence it was also a lot more fun to watch back then. More names, more surprises.

Hi Mathew, Mark certainly had the game, the skills and the ability but I think living the good life sometimes got in the way of the training and the focus. Twice he came close and deserved to be in the final but unfortunately a win eluded him.
Mathew Aconley He came close twice, possibly nerves or his erratic style at times, but he never closed the deal. Both finals exposed his major weakness, which is common among big guys: limited movement

Pete´s motion is 100% efficient. It´s clear that Marks spends more energy in his serve motion.
Both of them landed on their left foot after the serve. It was much more pronounced with Philipousis than Sampras.

Pete went on to win their next 5 of 6 matches. Love Federer, but he doesn’t have the best head2head against his peers. Federer completely dominated from 2004 to 2007.. but his main rivalry was with Andy Roddick. Not exactly the toughest opponent.

He used to hit with heavy topsin when required and his grip was quite modern which allowed him to do so. I said "big power baseliner all court player". Lendl was not a natural volleyer but he improved significantly from 1989 onwards, yes Lendl was the 1st power baseliner but he used to hit the ball flatter than Becker on average. His grip was more conventional, not as extreme as Boris. I have followed Beckers game since 1984, so you are preaching to the choir
What happened to Mark in the next round, by the way? He lost very badly to Woodforde (2-6 2-6 2-6). Can't believe that was just nerves - did he get injured or something, do you know?
I did see that game but it was a long time ago so other than the disappointing loss, there's little I remember clearly. I can only tell you what I heard some time later. I don't recall Mark being injured or nervous. To the best of my recollections, at least regarding how the total turn around was explained, as with most countries, the Australians practiced together and knew each other's games very well. Mark was very young and relatively new on the circuit and Woodforde came out that day after being coached to play a very specific style of game. In essence, he completely dismantled Mark's natural game with random shots, consistently chipping and spinning the ball, causing Mark to run and chase for the entire game. The constant changes and adjustments by a more experienced player who knew Mark's game so well, was fundamentally at the heart of the defeat. That was what I heard and so that is the best answer I can offer you. Thanks for watching the video and also for taking the time to comment.
Id also add, that Mark's game was up and down. Mark's tennis, his shots, everything was grooved to work with him hitting all out. When it was a good day he was very tough to beat, but when he was blasting away and the ball wasnt going in, he didnt have a plan B other than to keep going for it and hope to hit his way into form. It was only later that he started to develop some more options, to think a bit deeper, to find comfort in groundstrokes without just swinging all out. Sadly by that time the injuries and wandering focus had started, and Mark never really became the player he could have been, the odd stretch here and there excepted.
I agree. Had Mark's focused mindset in the latter part of his career, been his mindset when he was younger, that is, more training, more effort and more determination, I suspect his career would have been very different. That said, I still think he was an incredible tennis player and at his peak, he was awesome to watch.
Ser Uresto I would have to agree. Mark was a very exciting but highly streaky player to watch. Like most big servers, his game centered around that. Pete had the serve , but also had variety, consistency, and movement. That being said, this was probably Mark's most complete match.
Quite simply the roof was closed for this match making this perfect for Mark. Next round was played under normal conditions and his serve was 50 percent less effective.

totally agree. speed guns in the mid 90s musta been slow cuz pete and mark could consistently hit 130mph serves (210kph) later in their careers, yet nothing like that here. in a match against roddick, both he and sampras were hitting 130+ and roddick is known as one of the hardest servers of all time so we know sampras has it in him. 1:42:56 it's really obvious the gun is broken. that serve is easily 210kph+

@@timez32 It's similar to how Federer lost to Henman right after beating Sampras at Wimbledon. These 19 year old prodigies catch fire, have a great match, and then peter out (literally) losing the next match. It's very rare for a young talent to go all the way after beating an ATG, which makes Pete's 1990 USO run so special. He went through Mac, Lendl, and Agassi to win his first major when he was just 19.

Kyrios, Philippoussis, Tomic all fall into the category of good talent but weak minds. None of them has showed any capacity of being able to handle pressure. Lleyton Hewitt had lesser talent than all of these three, but far outmatched their achievements.
Philippoussis did win us 2 Davis Cups. Doesn't get any higher pressure than that. True that he didn't reach his potential though.

Philippoussis had multiple ACL and other knee surgeries and still had many big Major and Davis Cup runs and performances, nothing like the other 2.
Don't think Mark ever showed a weak mind. He didn't take his training and fitness as seriously as he should have, but I don't remember him ever quitting in a match mentally or coming apart. He was solid and confident on the court.
