  • Are you ready for a shocking statistic? 50% to 80% of people in the criminal justice system have a Traumatic Brain Injury. In the general public, that number is less than 5%. So perhaps there’s a good reason many people can’t escape the revolving door of criminal justice. Armed with this knowledge, brain researcher Kim Gorgens set out to find a solution - and she did. Dr. Kim Gorgens is a professor of Psychophysiology, Clinical Neuropsychology, and Psychology of Criminal Behavior at the University of Denver. She manages a portfolio of brain injury-related research--studying the reported history, cognitive function and brain biomarkers of probationers, inmates and college athletes. Her mission is to better understand the short and long-term impacts of injuring our most vital organ. She has a fridge filled with human brains, and a love of zombie movies (coincidence?). Simply put, Kim cares more about your brain than you do.

This is truly amazing. Psychology and the criminal justice system are so closely interlinked! Meeting people with compassion and help gets far better results than punishment and anger. Thank you Kim!

The 30 days at a time sentence speaks to me quite a bit. I've been suspended from 2 colleges, and I use alcohol for coping. I'm very lucky to have not been arrested for a lot of what I've done or lied about. A FORMER friend doesn't think any of my neurological and mental illness plays a role in my behavioral outburst or constant self hate.
I'm looking forward to seeing you next week at Tedtalksxmilehigh Rest!

I had a very wise neighbor who lived with epilepsy from a severe auto accident when she was a child in the 40s. She would always say that she didn't believe in the death penalty because she didn't believe a person who could kill someone has a healthy brain. Not to make this a political issue, it's just what she said, this video reminded me of her and her unique life perspective. My comment is not to politicise this video, I am not sharing my personal views.

We definitely need more approached like these in the criminal justice systems and elsewhere!

    Kim,
It was so nice watching you speak and making others understand how TBI's can really mess with a person. I'm looking forward to interviewing you, and seeing all the work you are doing. Thank you and see you on October 1st!

I know about these stats because a few of my doctors told me. Their advice is to get a criminal defense lawyer. I'm not saying that I will commit any crimes, but it's the brain injury itself that will make a person make the wrong choice.
There is a justice system in this country that does not care about people that have a TBI. DA's, judges, and the police are only interested in looking a person up. One thing that one of my lawyers told me was first off NEVER say anything to a cop about your TBI. They will try to use that against you, and since TBI survivors can never think clearly, he or she might say the wrong thing.
My last rant is very common with TBI survivors, is that most everybody else thinks we are drunk or on drugs. I get that look from people in public and law enforcement. Well, the same thing happens in the emergency room...go figure. Many of us TBI survivors now say, if you don't have a brain injury, then you don't understand, and don't tell me you know what it's like to have one.

This fix benefits both sides of the law no more victims and no more criminals
Today on the news i saw a little 12 year old boy shot and murdered that could have been prevented with this system. Everyday there is crime on the news, it could all be prevented with this system

How can we get in touch with you to get assessment?

Theresa Fightmaster I would ask your doctor for a referral to someone locally who can perform these quick neurological tests (there are many many variations of them) and, if needed, your doctor can order any imaging that is indicated from the tests.
Many schools have these tests performed on students who require it. You can maybe ask them who does their testing and contact them directly.
But there may be a specific service provider in your area that your doc may be aware of. It’s probably not covered and costs are all over the map.

This video is even better than your other one. I've gotten some bad concussions including ER serious ones. And yes I finally succumbed while off meds and ended up in jail. I googled it and with a TBI you're 400% more likely to develop a mental illness with a TBI. I hallucinated that electronics in my mom's house were alive and trying to get me and cut all kinds of power cords to "survive" and she called The cops not knowing what's going on even though I'd been to the ER the prior night for a closed head injury. The cops didn't care and took me to jail basically. I almost did 6 months and 2 grand fine for a first offense. I wish I was white and not Latino! Lol just kidding. I think the system is just broken.

Seriously fix the problem so crime doesnt happen in the first place, why punish people, why.. it's a burden to the state to punish people it changes people
God didnt design Adam inside of a cage he designed him in the garden
