Always cool to see someone enjoying the introduction to this mix of sport and art. There have been some sensors placed on the performers (all under 22 years old) that indicate their heart rate and oxygen use is on par with marathon runners.
I've always said Marching band/drum corps is a sport. I know we worked harder (and did better) than our football team in my high-school Marching time. These guys blow it out of the water. *Everything about DCI is athletic. Physically and mentally.* and I stand by that.
My brother in law was a drummer in the Cavaliers. His brother was a horn player. I’ve been to plenty of DCI competitions. Truly awesome when you’re watching live from the stands.
So with DCI, the different corps (there's about 40 around the USA) will start hosting auditions in November-January where one weekend in each of those months, people will travel to audition for the groups they want to be a part of. The maximum limit for a Drum Corps is 165 performers currently. Split among the Hornline (the people playing the brass horns) the Colorguard (the people with the flags, rifles etc) the Drumline (the people Marching with the drums) and the front ensemble (the people in the front playing the stationary instruments.) From February-April, most corps hold a camp 1 weekend per month for all of the contracted members to start learning the music together. In May, they all move into a local high school or college for "Spring Training" which is usually 30 days of consecutive rehearsals. They usually work 12 hours a day mostly outside in the summer heat. They practice fundamental techniques then work on learning the show. The "drill" is the forms and movements they do on the field, and they have to then put the music they all learned onto the field with the movements. The competitive season starts in late June. There's usually dozens of shows across the United States throughout the summer. Some shows are smaller and only have a few groups, while other are Regional Competitions, where something like the top 25 groups will compete against each other. The season goes till the 2nd weekend of August. That's where these videos are from, the World Championships. There's Prelims on Thursday night, all groups perform. Then, the top 25 scored groups move onto Semi-Finals on Friday night. Then, the top 12 scored will move onto Finals on Saturday night, where awards are given out after all groups have performed. Thank you for watching these shows. This activity is truly incredible. These guys are LOUD. I think the can usually push like 100-110 Decibels. I have the privilege to see a few groups live at a show held in my town in late July every year, so yeah it's pretty much an anual thing.
Dear Mathew, I only got to attend one live DCI Performance in 2011, here in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was blown right out of the stadium by the brilliance of "Between Angels...".. I cant begin to imagine the logistical nightmare of splitting the musical sections in half and then uniforming each half separately... And then there's the color guard ... It is still one of my favorite shows ever.
As the judges watch they are recording their responses. These tapes are made available to the corps to help them make changes and improvements to the show. Some judges are on the field and some are in the press box. If you want to get the perspective of a general effect judge this is from 2013 champion Carolina Crown's show e=mc².
