I started harvesting and using this last year for burning muscular pain caused by fibromyalgia. I find when used externally the effects last for up to 3 hours (for me). I've harvested and bottled it. Last year I kept it at room temperature and it turned skunky after about 3 - 4 months. This year I'm refrigerating it to see if it will maintain it's potency and not turn skunky.
@@reuben4710 Excellent! I froze some, thawed and used it after about 2 months and it worked as good as fresh. Last fall I harvested 25 ounces of the stuff. This morning I used a bit for burning pain in my lower back - this stuff is now 9 months old and has been refrigerated ... it's just as good today as it was when I first harvested it. This year I hope to harvest 40 - 50 ounces and am anxiously waiting for it to be available hopefully sometime within the next month.
@@margarettabak9521 thanks! Glad it worked. There's a 3km creek on the farm land behind my property and in July it's completely full of cattails. I'm going to try and harvest some this summer.
I heard of cattail jelly in the game CDDA (Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, I recommend it for anyone interested in video games) and wanted to know if it was real, and fascinatingly enough, now I know it is. Very cool, too bad I'm not sure if cattail grow in my country, but it's a fun fact to know nevertheless.
@@TheFloatingSheep Surprised I got a reply so late. Thanks for the info, good to know, might even try looking for cattails at some point in my free time.
Just discovered that if you dry the leaves, then soak them in water and wring out the liquid, you get way more of the slime, and you can run the leaves back under the tap countless times and you just keep on getting more and more, a handful of leaves can easily fill a bottle with slime and as a bonus you get that tea-like smell in it from the leaves, there's probably some benefit to the slime being infused with the nutrients of the leaves but, well, can't verify that just yet.
i wonder if you could harvest and jar it.. theres probably gotta be a way to do it.. youve sparked my interest, im going to try to figure out a way to store it.. that would be a great resource in a shtf scenario!
Do you harvest py by using a spool to scoop out the gel, or cut the cattail strands a d store in a container? How do you know it's not infected by the water it's growing im??? Does it matter ?

Have you tried refrigerating it yet? I'd love to know how long it will last refrigerated! Did you have a process for jaring?
How did it turn out?

How do you harvest large amounts of it?

I'm here for the same reason

Your profile says Estonia, if that's accurate, yes, they do grow there, you'll find them by any pond lake or river

Same here. Wanted to pine needle tea next.
Couldn't you harvest the gel and put it in like ice cube trays and freeze it?
I love this.
I make tinctures with it... Last 5 yrs without fridge
No doubt you could do that!
did you use alcohol to make the tinctures or glycerin? How much jelly to alcohol ratio? thanks so much

If you figure out a way, please share it with me! I'd love to know! You could probably freeze it, but again in SHTF that does you no good!
you would think putting it in a jar in the fridge - or maybe even the freezer in small freezer bags?
I commented above that I feel like you could probably put it in like ice cube trays and freeze it for the off seasons.
@Todd Hendricks one on one wouldn't work, there's too much water in the cattail jelly. honey: 2:1 at least
I'm wondering if it can be paired with the redgingerlily to make an amercanized awapuhi
thanks for sharing one i did not know
I wonder if you could freeze dry it and reconstitute it for use.
This has me wondering if it can be dehydrated into a powder form.
Maybe that would be a good idea for backups and storage, but I would be willing to bet that it would lose potency

Say I had a laceration that needed to be stitched. Could this gel be used to numb the pain?
Yes
thank you! Good info!
You really should’ve mentioned that this plant is edible as well, seeing as ya know, this is a survival channel :)
Wonder if it can be combined with redgingerlily to make americanized awapuhi
Can you use this to last a long time?
Iwonder can you harvest the gel in the winter?
I tried - the gel had been diluted with frost to the point that it was almost useless.
You never said if it worked, how it tasted, any explaination on its reaction.
Edward Padilla check out the end of the video! He also mentions the cons partway through, so I guess it doesn’t taste too bad.
the native americans would put in containers and save for later use
Do you know the proper method of how they did that? Would appreciate it
Anti bacterial too
haha walmart of the swamp. love it.

Make a tincure of it that will preserve it
U put in fridge
Roadside harvesting not the best idea...
Why?
