Very instructive video, thanks. Out here on the Left Coast, many places are very short of natural water sources. Cattails often are a very noticeable sign of water. It is surprising, if you look, where they pop up. You never know, but if you keep your eyes open even while just driving down the road, you can often find small water sources where no others exist for many miles around. It may be just damp earth, but if you dig down and wait, the holes often eventually fill with water. Line the bottom of the hole with grasses to help filter the water to some degree.

I just tried the flower spikes tonight and they were delicious! Tastes a lot like corn! I'll have to get some more of these and experiment with them to see if you can blanch them for freezing for later in the year like you can asparagus and beans.

Looks nice. Didn’t know about the interesting taste of the flower buds but ate a lot of the white bottom part always which I don’t find very slimy or bad in any way actually.

Thank you! Cattail root should be very good..just I'm not a root person at all lol. The widow for pollen is really short, not easy to get enough for a decent meal, unless you had some right in your neighborhood..

The mom hides them alone for weeks, so her scent and presence doesn't alert predators before they can run. She stops by to nurse.

    • @OldManoftheWoods

No it wasn't injured nor abandoned. just an infant. The mother left for food for the moment I guess, and it was no longer there when we got back.

A fawn's only natural defense is to lay perfectly still and hope it gets overlooked, so if you walk up on one laying down, they frequently just lay still and try not to bring attention to themselves

Ooooh… Never use non stick pans… Even the new ones that say they are PTFE and PFOA or PFOS free are simply using a sister chemical that is just as bad… They all use PFO-X or PFA-X of some type… And aluminum is really bad as well… Go with stainless or carbon steel… Enameled is fine but the enamel is pretty much a waste, and it will deteriorate fairly soon once used…
I enjoyed learning more about eating cattails, but would never eat any part of them that are growing by a road… Roadside cattails are heavily sprayed with herbicides because of how invasive they can be. Best to stick to pristine areas that you know are clean and not sprayed.
