  • So this week was a bit of a let down with having no compressor and the weather being awful but to keep the momentum up I decided to finally get around to sealing the cockpit sole.
The exterior machine screws are A4 316 Stainless Steel and the interior Tee Nuts are A2 304 Stainless Steel.
Sealant used to seal up the machine screws is Butyl tape. Try to buy a tape that has good reviews as some of the cheaper "Butyl tapes" are really quite awful.
Sanding tool used to remover the old sealant from the cockpit sole is a 3m Sandblaster tool.

How much time does it take to open the sole and get access to the rear of the engine? I need to open it to grease the shaft and clean the waterfilter for the engine cooling. Came here looking for solutions - and I think I found it. Thanks for sharing.

Nice job ! Keep up the good work. Do you think this would work on the forward hatch ?

Mike Larson Hey Mike, yeah, I plan on doing the exact same thing to my forward hatch with the difference being I'm going to be re-gelcoating that hatch as after 45 years it's becoming a little worn. Should be a fun experiment!

What type of head was on that screw you removed at the end of the video on the screw? Thanks you

Great video. Just want to know where did you get that cool looking hand sander?

Barncle Bill Hey Bill, it's a 3M sandblaster tool, comes in really handy. Just added a link in the description of where I bought it. They sell sand paper to match but I find it easier to just buy wide enough sandpaper on a roll and just trim to length as and when needed... cheaper too!

Nice work... Can you tell me more about the black sealant that you are using? Is it specific for marine use? Thanks

Simone Fabris Yeah, it's Butyl tape. It's a non hardening sealant that's used extensively on boats, usually to seal deckware. I prefer it over silicone as it the clean up is easier and it can be reworked in a pinch. There are some "butyl tapes" which are awful though so I'd say spend a little extra for a product with good reviews. Hope this helps!

Hey - could you source decent butyl tape in the UK? What brand did you go with? thanks!

A boat called wanda Hey, I'm not rebedding my deck hardware until the spring so I've not used what I'm about to recommend yet but I'm going to be using either Arboseal butyl tape or Arbomast BR. I looked for hours and these seem to have good reviews. Doesn't seem to be much else in the UK. Josh.

Epoxy and some clamps would do the job.
