- In this video I I replace Salomon SNS ski bindings on my Fisher skis to the the NNN system using the Rottefella NIS mounting system.

So I've been cross country asking since 2012. Having no clue and just jumping in, I bought a used pair of downhill skis.
I would and still ski around town and in the parks. Yes, using downhill skis the first year🤣
Fortunately I met a local skier who kindly let me know (years later he told me him and his friends had a great laugh) I was using downhill skis to x country ski.
Anyway, I've been using the correct skis and boots since, oh that's after making my own ski shoes, another laugh
Now I have learned that there are multiple bindings and shoes, oh my.
As I bought a new pair of boots, unaware there were different styles. I bought the two slot nnn boots and made them fit into the metal closure, with force, and I wondered why my new boots were so terrible. I got home and saw there were two slots and my old boots had one slot.
So I seriously thought of how to personally remove the extra rubber from my new boots. After imaging in my head the struggle of removing the rubber, to make my new nnn boots into one slot boots, I decided to look up videos on different style boots. Found your video. And I think I'll just go to the store and see what they have.
Then I'll try to replace my rollerski binding with the new system.
Wow! Thanks for sharing your story, its very funny. I love how you were determined to XC ski and didn't let anything stop you! Fantastic! Yes, ski boots, binding and sometimes skis all must be compatible. There are so many different brands and each has slight differences that makes switching to a newer boot binding or ski almost impossible without doing some research.

Hello ! I am just in the middle. I managed today dismantling the SNS bindings from old pair of Fischers I got. There is no mounting plate, just the screws. So it should be easy to install the new Rottefellas. Now waiting the package to arrive via mail. Thanks for the video. We have lots of snow now here in Finland. Best Regards Viejo

Hi again, i was able to swap SNS profil classic binding directly to new Salomon Prolink binding. Uses same hole pattern. If your ski has SNS Propel with two boot bolt system the screw holes don’t align to Prolink. Can’t wait until SNS is gone completely although will take 10s of years. Until then buyer beware! SNS is the Nordic version of Betamax. Thanks again!

We use plastic plug to seal binding screw hole at a ski shop. You could have picked up some when you purchased new bindings at ski shop. Plastic plug creates at tight seal. Just a thought.

Yes, if I hadn’t been so focused on buying new bindings, I would have picked up some plastic plugs too. I did know that they existed, but when I came to mounting the bindings, I had to use what I had.

I would like to know professionally from experience skiers here what the feelings are about it. Does it feel much better or easier the NNN or about same as SNS? I just got my first used SNS system to give it a try for first in 20 years. Don't have much opinion since boots are bit too big. But seems to be getting easier.
After all these years they decided to make a common boot/binding system. In my experience, the Solomon SNS Profil and Pilot bindings were superior in construction and materials. I have broken a number of NNN bindings, but rarely have seen broken SNS bindings.
People call SNS bindings obsolete, that is not true. They still work just fine, many World Cup and Olympic skiers have won on SNS. What I understand is NNN II patent expired and Solomon decided to cave and adapt the NNN system.

Apparently Salomon hasn’t completely dropped the SNS. I’ve heard new equipment is still available for purchase.

I'm replacing SNS with some Russian-made NNN bindings that do not have the adjustability provided by the NIS plate. The hole pattern of the old SNS seems to conform exactly to the new NNN; the bar clip seems to be in the same place with both bindings. Is there a problem with simply screwing the NNN toe clip and heal plate into the original SNS holes, of course, after filling the holes with glue? Thank you.

There should be no problem mounting the new bindings using the existing holes. The only concern to to ensure the toe bar where the boot pivots is over the centre of balance of the ski. If the pervious bindings were mounted in the correct position, then the new bindings should mount to the same position on the ski and the toe bar should fall inline with the skis centre of balance.

How did you know where to put the front of the binding? About to do same install and bindings seem to have fore-aft adjustability.

To answer your question about where to mount the front binding, I checked the balance point of the ski to ensure it was in the same position as where the the old binding clipped to the toe bar on the boot. I marked the side of the ski with a Sharpie. I then mounted the new front binding so the toe bar on the boot clipped in at the skis balance point.
I hope that makes sense.
@@GeoSphere Yes, mainly asking because I have a couple of skin skis that have +/- 3 adjustability. Evidenly moving slightly forward of balance point can give you more grip in difficult (warm, wet, ice) conditions here in PNW using skins or Zero+ skis. I'm going to try +1 on my new Rossi's that can be adjusted on the fly. I just was wondering if it would be better for a beginner skier to move to +1 to 3 ahead of balance point to help insure grip and a fun experience. Again where we have pretty crap snow here in the PNW mountains on the Pacific side. Thanks. Might be an interesting topic for you moving forward if you encounter same.

You are quite right, moving the balance point forward does give slightly better grip uncertain conditions. In my video (and my bindings) I have a system that allows the toe piece to be adjusted fore and aft on the ski base plate using a “key” that comes with the bindings. Since I still ski on wax skis, I have never felt the need to move the bindings for better grip. If I do want better grip for climbing hills, I extend my wax pocket forward about an inch when I apply my kick wax. I am not a racer. Simply a pure recreational skier, so most of the time I just go out with what I’ve got and make the best of it.
In your case with skin skis, I don’t have any experience. It sounds like your bindings allow you to adjust. Experiment and see how the different positions work on similar conditions. If you are new to XC skiing, leave it in the balanced position until you develop and are rock solid with your technique. Then adjust to fine tune for performance.

Michel, sadly, I don’t have them. I kept them around for a year but during a “ruthless” clean up of my work bench area, I decided to throw them in the trash. Too bad because a week ago, a friend needed a pair of the old bindings as well. I really wish I had not been so “ruthless” in my cleaning.

Is NNN better? Well, that’s a huge discussion point. When I switched, Salomon announced they had discontinued SNS. 3 months later, they announced they would continue to produce that binding/boot system. 🤬 lol oh well, I’m using NNN now. And it gave me a project to make a Video about! 👍🏽
