What a beautiful b12 right there, one of my favorite L.N.E.R tender engines. I hope the price wasn't too rough for a great model for that. Love the grand video Sam, and keep at it in due future times.
It’s been a very long time since you’ve reviewed the Hornby B12! I remember watching that video a couple of times on your channel before and the model is outstanding! 😃
Well I'm very impressed with the B12, I had one of the original Triang models. As I remember,it was quite well equipped with Magnadhesion and Syncrosmoke . I didn't have any problems with it other the body cracking across the securing screwhole. I can't remember what happened to it, more than likely sold by my parents when I got into motorcycles. Happy memories.
Is it me or do British steam locomotives have a certain “charm” to them? I mean don’t get me wrong I like most steam locos but the British ones somehow stand out to me. Anyway great review!
I think its to with their proportions due to the smaller loading gauge historically and still to a large extent now on the UK network. Diesel locos are most noticeable. Long, thing and relatively low. Put a class 66 next to lets say an gp40 or sd40 loco from the US. Their basically the same loco underneath but the 66 is packaged much more neatly.
I had a brief scare with my Hornby B12 today. While I was running it with 6 older Hornby Teaks it slowed down and started spewing smoke from the boiler! I thought for a second the motor was fried, but then I remembered UK-market locos have EMI suppression capacitors. Lo & behold, after taking it apart, I found a burnt-out cap! I've removed it and now the B12 is once again running as pretty as it looks!
Ahh phew - I've had that before too with a county! Worth replacing that capacitor though - they reduce arcing on the motor commutator, and help to extend their lives! You can buy them on Ebay cheap enough, higher value the better! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wow! I am a personal fan of the B12 class because it just looks really cool. Also, if you’re familiar with the fan-made story of Alfred, the “B12” class (his class isn’t really defined but he looks like a B12), yeah, that’s also a factor. Anyway nice vid Sam! Amazing model! Thanks!!
Loved this review Sam, and your advice to Bachmann and Heljan over the benefits of a decent mechanism. Wonderful to see it pull the rake of 7 coaches up Gordon's Hill with no problem. I might invest in the black livery version.
Beautiful model Sam! Such lovely engines and we’re lucky to have a preserved example! In fact, the preserved example is the only preserved British 4-6-0 steam engine with inside cylinders!
The 'back-of-the-box' info on this one I find very interesting. I'm glad Sam is re-reviewing these. I've only been here about a year or so. As a US broadcaster (NBC) once said to promote it's reruns, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you."
Hi Sam, A very classy loco. I was pulled by the one on the North Norfolk Railway. Agreeing with your previous comments on the LNER Apple Green and white lined livery it does look very good. As always a great review. Stay Safe
It's 2021; just bought one of these here in the US for $173 USD. Expensive, but still a great value for the money: all metal body, dual flywheels, fantastic detailing.... btw, my body fits 100% correct on the frame, and there are no missing bits, no glue marks, etc. Just 100% high quality assembly. Why can't they ALL be this good....?
Hi Sam nice video love them all when is the next live season I have been paying a lot of train simulator games on Roblox today wish the weekends where longer than 2 days got to go to school Monday
Hi Sam! After your review on the incredible Bachmann 37, I went ahead and picked up the class 40! I highly recommend it as it is practically the same in terms of quality and performance. The prices of them vary although I'm sure at some point you'll be able to find a good deal on hattons 😉. I'd also like to bring up the attention of the Bachmann deltic as this is just as good! Seems that all round Bachmann diesel range are pretty awesome! Thanks!
Omg at 17:56 when the B12 coupled up to those coaches, all I found think about was that Thomas and friends coupling sound from the older model series XD
my grandad built me one of these out of an old broomstick- my, this brings back so many memories (I actually have it sitting next to me as I write this)! I named it Alfred after the Thomas and Friends OC.

Hiya - I have 2 similar Loco's - BR 4-6-0 B17/2 'Welbeck Abbey' No. 61619 (R3448) & 'Westham United' No.61672 (Which came in the set called "East Coast Express" R1214). It says on the back that in 1926 with increased loading on the E. Anglia passenger services & the introduction of modern, vacuum-braked coaching stock, there was a desperate need for a loco that could supplement the Holden B12 Class on the former G. E. routes of the L. N. E. R.
Yep got one of these and they are remarkable locomotives, possibly one of Hornby's best. Think I got mine for around £122 mark but was kicking myself for putting of buying it for so long as I could have got it for £116 from Hornby's own outlet shop in Swindon which has now sadly closed.
hi sam after i saw your review im now getting the b12 for christmas also i went on that train irl the day we came out of the last lockdown in sherrigham it runs 1 every 2 weeks there on the poppy line holt to sherringham and the other way round
I just bought one of these on the strength of this review. Looking closely through a loupe everything is perfect. The metal boiler joint underneath is spot on as is the lining, paint, no glue marks, and running. 10/10 I put some flat adhesive automotive wheel weights inside the tender as it only weighs 50g stock. Keep an eye out for eBay 20% and 15% promotional dealer discount codes. I got mine for the usual £145 less 20% paid by eBay and another 2.5% off going through a cashback site (Quidco) making it the best value new loco I've ever bought!
Although I'm a Southern man, born & bred down in deepest Kent, I allus considered the LNER B12 was the epitome of what a classic British Steam Loco should look like.

I remember seeing that locomotives on some UA-cam channel and the videos were made in train Sim 2009 every time that locomotive will show up they'll play some music from the 16 century and it had an evil face on that this is bringing back memories from watching that channel
Alfred is a character from The Railway Series based on that locomotive, but he only appeared in the picture of "the shed" that was in a blue livery with red lining(In "Edward's Day Out")
Sam, just got my son his first B12 and was wondering if you had experienced that the middle wheel on the tender sometimes didn’t move as his does. Tried to look at the close up on the video and it looked like yours was the same. Is this correct or should they all move all the time?? Great channel and keep up the good work.
What about Gordon, the LNER A3 Pacific , or Spencer, the LNER A4 Pacific, the A3 and the A4 are the most famous LNER class engines in history. Maybe you should’ve put Spencer, the A4 class you have, or Gordon running with the Alfred, B12, since he’s had a appearance in the railway series.
I like how all these Alfred comments are about an unofficial fan-made story of a character that just made three cameo appearances in one book. It's not even known if he really is a B12, nor is it known that Alfred is actually his name.
Always liked the B12, was my first model Steam engine I had (first model train being a Hornby Cl91 in Intercity) so does bring back memories, might see if I can get the Union Mills one for N Gauge when things clear up a little, already got some teaks for it to haul around! Great video as always Sam! ~James
One for my Xmas List Sam . Like to buy my Locos from the Model shop where you can inspect your loco out of the box before purchase . Nice review as always Sam takecare.
It kinda looks like Henry and Edward (from Thomas and Friends) adopted a child together and named it Henward (strange name I know). It's an unusual Hornby train that I have ever seen in my entire life. I gotta say, it looks pretty cool and awesome as a hornby train for the Hornby train collections. And it has whe wheels of Henry and the side rod's of Edward.
Hoping for one of these for christmas this year, and even if not I will be getting one with my own cash. A model worth the money! (At least at retailer price)
the engine: *B E E G B O I* the tender: *s m o l* lke seriously, i feel like this engine deserved a bigger tender considering the size of the loco in general
hi sam. another great video. i must admit the b12 is the loco i like the best.i am not really a train guy but my grandson is. and yes i am getting into it.i am also planning to build my own layout.so the b 12 is well on the list. thamks again sam.tom
Fun Fact Of The Day: In The Railway Series (Written By Rev. W. Awdry and illustrated by C. Reginald Dalby) There Was A B12 In the first page of Edwards day out, it was right next to Gordon in a NWR Blue, Fans Gave Him the name Alfred. Alfred was Rude, Pompous, Arrogant And Caused A Lot Of Trouble Along The Railway. He Was Bigger Than Edward But Smaller Than Gordon. Nobody Knows What Happens To Him After Edwards Day Out, I believe he was sent away and never seen again.
Alfred.
That should get me a lot of likes...

Almost feel as if a certain manufacturer was being said in that sneeze... also today I've been a CME member for 2 years!
Yeah it does sound like that doesn't it?! Oh wow, that's absolutely incredible - thanks so much for your support mate! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
One for my Xmas List Sam . Like to buy my Locos from the Model shop where you can inspect your loco out of the box before purchase . Nice review as always Sam takecare.
Cheers Michael! That's good to hear - probably a bonus being able to do that isn't it? ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yeah you're right - I can see Edward and Henry in this! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
So I got that GG1 in the mail today. Not going to spoil anything, but you are going to like it :)
haha okay!! Hope its good for you mate- no idea when mine will show up! xD
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Superb model of a very attractive locomotive. A nice reminder of an excellent model.
Thanks a lot John - glad you liked it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hoping for one of these for christmas this year, and even if not I will be getting one with my own cash. A model worth the money! (At least at retailer price)
That's fantastic mate, hope you really enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I loved that end shot ngl
haha thank you, glad you liked it! :D
@@SamsTrains you probably recognize me by now dont you
Quite a beautiful engine, in real life and in model form
I agree with you! :D
Sam, remember that big flywheel machine you made recently? How do you think it would affect locomotive crawling?
I don't think it'd effect the crawling too much!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video Sam. I'm tempted
haha thanks mate - I'd go for it! ;D
Nice lens on your camera makes all the difference, thank you. Nice loco too.
Thanks Drew, glad you could see a difference! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Normal Sam’s Trains fans: It’s a B12
Thomas fans: A L F R E D
Tbh i wish i had a hornby b12
Many may agree, many may disagree, but I find it UNREALISTIC how close the driving wheels are! (And I’ve seen a real b12 and it is UNREALISTIC!!!)
What makes you say that? They look okay to me, and Hornby will have measured the real thing!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
the engine: *B E E G B O I*
the tender: *s m o l*
lke seriously, i feel like this engine deserved a bigger tender considering the size of the loco in general
haha!! You're probably right there, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice model. Thanks for showing that Sam
No problem mate - glad you liked seeing them! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@@SamsTrains no worries sam.
That's very cool - I never knew the backstory of him! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
To be honest, 98462 being Alfred is very cliche now, as well as Alfred being evil.
I'm using this engine in my next book
Alfred Is Based Of An Lner B12 From London And He,s Build On The Same Time As Crovan Formerly Known As 87546 And Henry
Yeah he is - I heard about Alfred, scary guy! :O
Merry Christmas,
Sam :)
I watch this man years ago
haha welcome back! :D
That's one beautiful looking locomotive. I've a Hornby B17 which I'm really impressed with but would like to get one of these.
Thanks mate, the Hornby B17 is lovely too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Alfred the loaned B12 is back! Yay!
haha yes he is! ;D
@@SamsTrains The video is great too
