How To Shorten Chinos (Avoid THIS Mistake)

    If you have a pair of chinos that are too long in this video I'm going to show you how to shorten them. You're going to need a sewing machine, some tailors chalk, a ruler, and some sewing pins. My chinos from Target are 34x34, which for me is way to long. I want them to be 34x32. In order to do that I'm going to measure 2 inches from the bottom of my chinos up. Then I'm going to cut off the extra fabric right underneath my original hem, leaving about 3/4ths of an inch. Anything less than that and it will look weird trust me. Then I'm going to put some sewing pins in it to hold it in place, and sew a new straight stitch right on there. As far as my mistake goes, as you can see I had a TON of birdnesting underneath my chinos when I started. The reason why that happened is because of my bobbin, and it was super frustrating. I ended up having to take all of that out with a seam ripper which is time consuming, and then start over. I wanted to make sure to keep all of this in here so that you know it can happen to you. Mistakes happen, no ones perfect, including me!

    One really good tip I learned from my family friend is to make a seam guide with a ln aluminum can. She cuts it up and Sanded the edges so it's not so sharp and would make 2 of them and bent to work with watever size hem. Was a total life saver for doing the tuck under kinda deal!

    Love the videos! My first sewing machine should arrive soon and I'm excited. One of the things I'd love to see is a video about how to get the seat of pants to fit better. I'm a pretty active guy and have weight trained for 20+ years so to get the legs to fit the way I need the waist/seat is often too big. How do I fix that?

    • @molotov681
      @molotov681 2 роки тому +1

      I'm not SD, but I would taper first, since that seam is on the inside, then shorten them, since that seam will be more visible, so you want to be able to do that part nicely without changing that hem with the tapering.

    this is a great channel now that im beginning to tailor my own clothes *QUESTION* i have a pair of pants with stripes down the sides of them. The stitching is on the stripes. These pants are baggy in my legs so I was going to tailor them myself but I dont want to lose the stripes. Any suggestions on where i can lay the new stitchwork ? im assuming not because the original stitching is *right on* the stripes which run all the way down the leg vertically. thanks

    Question: Do you know of any DIY tutorial things which might help me add a wider space to the ironing board? I ca'tn do some of the things you use a larger flat space for currently.
    Background: I've been watching a good few of your videos but I have yet to make any alterations. Today I was going to do a Tshirt because I could mess up with that and not care as much. I watched your video on how to make seems for Tshirts but realized I don't really have the flat space required in my small living arrangement to pull the shirt out and find the second seam (my ironing board is no where near wide enough and that's basically all I have).

    A question: if the cuffs of my chinos have become frayed over time, is there any way to fix this--maybe to turn them under slightly? The present length is good, so I can't hem them shorter, but the frayed ends look terrible. Can they be saved or is time to pry open my wallet for new pants?

    • @StylishDTailors

      You COULD turn them in slightly yes, you would lose a bit of length obviously but it's doable.

    I’m in the UK and what frustrates me is the inconsistency of the clothes I buy lately. If I find a pair of chinos that I like, I tend to buy a few pairs, maybe some in a different colour, due to the fear of them being discontinued, something which has caught me out in the past. However, in the last couple of years and on numerous occasions I’ll do this and the fit varies drastically from pair to pair. Does anyone else find this?
