I just bought this tow bar. I used it last week to drive from Phoenix to Dallas. It worked very well and had no problems. I used the d ring on my warn bumper of a jeep JKU, pulled it with Silverado 1500.
@@extremeterrain So if the bumper has 'D-Ring mounts', this is legal? Do you have an actual list manufactures of aftermarket bumpers that qualify, I have heard a lot of contradictory information about using the 'D-Ring mounts'. It does seem to make sense though, just wondering about the legal aspect of this method. Thanks
This video started off so promising with a picture of a Jeep just like mine behind the presenter. But then to install it, he used an entirely different looking Jeep equipped with a totally different bumper. If the first step is to replace the bumper, then it would be nice to tell us so, and with what & how (perhaps a link to another video). :(
Thanks for the video. Its difficult for people to realize, you are just showing the tow bar kit. Whether the vehicle can be flat towed, or even if it is legal to flat tow in their state, is for the Jeep owner to decipher.
I'm installing this now and had to go to home depot to replace the hardware, I couldn't tighten the locking nuts on the bolts even with an impact wrench...I'm guessing they were defective, very puzzling. The new hardware {class 8} went on like butter.
With all due respect, i own a $40 dll made in china universal tow bar on my tj jeep on 35's and NEVER had a problem, and looks almost identical to this one on the video
That would definitely be helpful! We opted not to cover install of a wiring harness though simple because this kit is just for the tow-bar itself. -Zach
Should the key be left in the ignition, and turned to the first position, to verify it's inlocked? The steering should remain unlocked during all towing, right? Thanks, and.great video.
Wait a minute. You tow with the key off and steering locked? No mention of lights. What about when you want to drive the Jeep, what does the tow bar do?
Would this work on an XJ with aftermarket bumper/shackle tabs? * oh wow haha I click the link to your site and you don't even have an option for XJ parts?! Hahaha
It looks like the brackets come with East disconnect bars that would allow you to easily take the bar off the bumper. You chose to use the bolt that needs a tool to take it on and off the bumper. Why not just use the quick disconnects and remove the tow bar very easily from the Jeep?
What size is the sleeve??? Can I get it from smittybuilt?? I have the tow bar and the bumper but no sleeves. I'm in the process of modifying some. Please help
This tow bar is a piece of crap for flat towing a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Its rated up to 4000# a wrangler Unlimited is 5000# Plus if you have aftermarket accessories. The Harbor Freight A frame tow bar is 1/3 the price rated at 5000# The smittybilt bolt ripped out of the thin metal , Jeep then came forward ans hit the RV.

You should cross the safety chains when towing to the opposite side. The point is to catch and cradle the tow hitch in the case it comes unhooked.
That's what I was thinking.

When I found this kit on Extreme Terrain I almost cried..the kits on eTrailer are waaay more expensive..thanks Smittybilt and E.T.!
Glad we could help, Robert! Hope you enjoy it! -Zach

Smart and fast. Very cool
Comprehensive video. Thanks!

The supplied nuts were lock nuts with nylon in the last few threads to lock the hardware together. Regular grade 8 won’t act the same way
so you dont cross your safety chains?

Should cross safety chains at vehicle to keep ball mount from hitting ground in case mount comes off ball.
Great video.
Thanks for watching! We appreciate it! -Zach
You forgot to mention a wiring harness for the lights on the back of the Jeep. I believe this would be rather necessary.
That would definitely be helpful! We opted not to cover install of a wiring harness though simple because this kit is just for the tow-bar itself. -Zach
the adapter fitted to the d ring mounts is loose and seems a liability

yes
Not sure why not he did not leave both transmissions in neutral - key off. Steering must not be locked.
Wait a minute. You tow with the key off and steering locked? No mention of lights. What about when you want to drive the Jeep, what does the tow bar do?
They said to use safety chains attached to the Jeep bumper but they never showed it
I don’t see the adjustable tow bar part! Did I missed something?
Would this work on an XJ with aftermarket bumper/shackle tabs?
* oh wow haha I click the link to your site and you don't even have an option for XJ parts?! Hahaha
What bumper was used in the video? I have a Barricade trail force, can I use the D rings to tow?
Yes sir.
Does the steering column supposed to be locked?

I read the quick release bolts are for short haul, the manufacturer recommends the bolts for cross country.
not crossing your safety chains?
What model bumper are you attaching to?
I don't have the D-rings mount on my 1987 YJ front bumper. Where is the install for a horizontal mount?
Smittys website says these D brackets are not rated to tow..?
Nice😍
Do the front wheels shake all around? What keeps the front aimed front?
What is the distance between holes on the universal mounts? I need this for a Mahindra Roxor.
On the road pls
What size is the sleeve??? Can I get it from smittybuilt?? I have the tow bar and the bumper but no sleeves. I'm in the process of modifying some. Please help
wait is that a Ford F150 in a extreme terrain video??? THATS ILLEGAL
does the steering not lock? my samurai i need to put the key in and cycle it on then off, it only locks when the key is removed
key has to stay in ignition and one clink from the on position to unlock the steering
Doesn't the steering wheel lock when you turn the key to off and remove it like that?
Terry Waters wrangler steering wheels don’t lock
John Coyne Ha ha, riiighhttt.
Who told you that?
@@Ejscars Your mother did.
Assumption = You have a bumper with D-Rings. You know what they say about YOU "assume", right? But in this case, it only refers to YOU. Lousy video
