@@HowtoAutomotive I must admit after this experience with performing my own car repairs I have a new respect for mechanics. As a nurse I am often told how it takes a special type of person to do my job but I realize that applies more so for you. Godspeed.
Not all heros wear capes. This video was straight to the point and highly informative and detailed. This man just saved me a little over $600. Thank you good sir
Man... I wish that you did all how to on vehicals.. You showed everything in detail straight to the point and very precise. You made a video from start to finish in 5 mins what other people would have done on 15 to 20
Ok I checked the video last night, replaced the starter and the video is spot on! however you do not need the flex head at all. I used a regular craftsman 3/8DR ratchet and 14mm deep well socket and did not have a problem. after breaking torque with it I just grabbed my 1/4DR ratchet afterwards with the 14mm socket to finish driving the mounting bolts out from the starter.
I replaced the starter on my 2013 Sonata over the weekend. This is a really helpful video. I did open the top components to easily get to the bolts of the starter. I couldn't do it from under.
Thanks my dad and I changed the starter in just a few hours thanks to this video. I found the top bolt easier to get from the top by feeling, but my car was only on jack stands. Auto zone said they see this part breaking very commonly.
I just pulled the starter out of 2009 2.4. I removed the bracket as described, but I didn't have to worry about the hose bracket. I did remove the air cleaner box (easy) and from there I was able to remove the two bolts holding the starter from the top side.
My 2010 2.4 was setup different. The throttle body was in the way, so the starter bolts could not be accessed from below, and the oil filter was in a different location. I used the "top method", but DID NOT have to remove the intake. I -only- removed the air filter hose, and I could then access the starter bolts. They are hard to find, but once you locate them, they are easy to remove. Then it dropped below. I also removed that plate below the intake and the starter dropped down enough to access the wiring. This method is still way, way easier the those who insist on removing the intake, coolant lines, fuel lines, wiring harness, vac lines, etc. That method is madness.
I did a combo bottom/top method using info from this video a lot easier to get to that top bolt and bottom bolt for that matter. All you have to do is move the air box takes about 3 extra minutes. Thanks for the video took about an hour after I found the right tools that bracket was the worst part.
Thank you, good video. Looks easy if the car is on a lift, I will buy a replacement starter and pay a shop to install. This video makes the situation pretty clear.
Just changed a 2011 sonata starter. I'd consider myself a half ass mechanic...When you are on the ground and don't have a lift, the greatest tip I can provide is to put your feet facing the back of the car because it allows your hand to have proper alignment and clearance for your hand to grip anything at all in the tight space; without your hand cramping up. This guy must be a ratchet aligning god because that top screw for the starter is insane to reach. If you unscrew the two hose clamps for the intake tube up top you can get at the top bolt for the starer a lot easier. You can also reach the bottom bot from the top as well. Honestly the bracket with the 4 bolts and getting the starter in and out was the hardest part. I had to force the starter toward the radiator fan around the oil hoses while twisting the starter all over to get it to fit...im glad thats over...
That was very well done. I am a veteran technician but my wife’s car broke today so guess what I’m doing tonight? Thanks for posting this Call good old UA-cam university.
Well, you did it a lot faster than I did, but eventually got it! Great video, and helpful tips in the comments. I didn't see any benefits accessing the top bolt from the top, and did it all from the bottom. Mostly took a while fighting with trying to get the bolts to align with the starter.
I have done 3 of these starters 1 from the top because the car was buried in mud, had to remove the intake manifold, he did a great close-up video but I found it easier to remove the throttle body to get to remove/install the starter bolts then as he has shown.
Great video, showed everything necessary without all the b.s. (Scotty). For everyone doing this at home, takes about an hour. Only difficult part, at least for me, was getting the top starter bolt loose - not a lot of room around that one, only a few clicks of the ratchet at a time. Otherwise, easy peasy.
Awesome video. Thanks a million. Anyone do this yet. ? Just wondering if Jack stands and a home setup is really rough?? Sometimes a lift , makes jobs from the bottom so much easier
I didn't need to remove the bracket when I just pulled this same starter from a car at the junkyard and only took me 5 minutes to remove it. Of course the air box wasn't in the way up top and stuff but yea. I didn't need to remove that bracket. Only that 1 10mm socket that holds them hoses down up top to get the starter bolts out.
Thanks for posting. Quick correction, the manual says remove the throttle body and the intake manifold STAY, which is the bracket that you removed, not the manifold itself. Although I see no reason why they want you to remove the throttle body, none.
I'm going to be doing this very repair this weekend for a neighbor, only thing is I don't know what I should charge them. Any suggestions? (They already have the new starter)
I would ask you about these some refurbished and new starters (But not original) for selling on EBAY price between $66-$75. Do you think are containing same breakable plastic lever inside it ? I heard somebody telling they made it metal. Any idea Please!
Is replacing the starter in sonata 2011 is different than 2012 by any chance? I watched another video on a 2011 and the guy took off some stuff on top of the engine. Is that needed ?
I have a 2016 sonata that just cutt off out of nowhere hasn't started just clicks put a wrench on crank and it wont turn can a starter do this with no warning lights or problem starting before??
Lamar Munson if you mean the engine stalled and now it won’t start then no. If it just all of a sudden it won’t start then yes that could be a starter.
here is real time saver tip for you i do the hole job in 45 minutes by just removeing the snorkle at the throttle body for the top bolts and under neith just removed coolant line drain of course it"s much easyer to remove starter once you removed fasteners save tons of time do three or four a week, Just jack up the car like in video or car ramps will do
And this goes for the GLS as well? I'm looking to do this for a friend and she has the GLS. What is the Coolant line drain? Haven't had a chance to get up under the car yet to take a look.
I'm just a regular guy who takes care of his own cars as much as possible (in other words, not a car restorer or professional mechanic). Took me about an hour, hardest part is the top starter bolt, there's not a lot of room to break it loose. Once you get it moving you only have a few clicks of the ratchet each time because of the space. Otherwise it's not that difficult.
I know this is old but im doing a 12 Elantra GLS it calls for .8 for labor when you do follow OEM install do you cut a break on time or charge what the book says? always a dilemma for me.
Welding Junkie The only breaks I gave her two friends and family to everybody else I charge but time your time is valuable. Only other time I would discount labor is if it’s overlapping.
@@HowtoAutomotive Thank You that's how i tend to be because sometimes you will sometimes you lose. I try to follow pro demands labor times as they are pretty accurate
I had my burned out starter replaced today and my car is cranking too slow to start now. All my lights and everything electrical works inside. Anything else I should try? 2014 sonata
You got to go back over your work make sure all the connections are good. If anything are loose it will not let all the voltage go to the starter. And it’s not uncommon to have a rebuilt starter be bad right out of the box.
I got a starter problem my car dont start i try to boost my battery but nothing goes on. After that i decide to tap the starter and my car goes on again do you thing m'y starter is good or sometime he can do that. I bring my car to the garage and they say my starter is good but im not sure ??
You have to believe all these big store mechanic shops, like tire plus, tire kingdom, pep boys, firestone and such are still charging you the related manual labor time of 2.5 to 4 hours, and doing the removal this way, and cutting the time to 40 to 45 minutes! So in reality these shops have tripled their profit or more on the labor
This method failed for me. I have a 2011 Sonata Limited. It has front engine mounts that get in the way of reaching certain bolts, but in this vid, you can see the mounting holes, but there are no mounts. Best way I found was to remove air cleaner, air intake pipe and ECT. Then you can unscrew the 12mm oil line retainer bolt and the 14mm starter bolts from the top. You only have to loosen the 4 bolts on the intake manifold bracket (from under the car), I used a small box end wrench for this. Then you follow the rest of the vid, but after disconnecting the wiring to the starter pull it out from the top. You may have to clip the wire tie holding a wire harness to the engine to get enough room for the starter. It is a tight fit, but I got it out.
My jack and stands are under my old Continental. The air box and battery come right out. I may do the top method. Make sure you get a new intake gasket
That's a big lie i took the starter bolts off from the top only moved the intake hose and water hose bolts came out easy slide the starter down and out didnt have to remove any of the things from under the car just the splash guard only took less than an hour only because we took smoke breaks
