the book that surprised me was scythe by neal shusterman. going into it I loved the concept but I didn’t realize just how much lore and world building it was going to have in it. I could honestly talk about the book’s philosophy and morals for hours!
I did a presentation on it and the character development in my young adult work shop class and after my teacher said she’s gonna use it, just based off my presentation, for her future classes! I can’t wait till she actually reads it and really sees how great it is!
I’ve been recommending The Nightingale to anyone who will listen since it came out. I’m so, so glad you loved it. It was such an amazing and brilliantly done book with a very sensitive subject being handled beautifully! Everyone should read The Nightingale!
A short history of the girl next door was such a surprise. I had high expectations but then I actually read it and was impaled with so much different emotions. It’s the only book that made me cry (and I NEVER cry when reading books). Definitely recommend
2 books that really surprised me this year were: Upside of Unrequited and Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe. I heard they were good but I had no idea that I was going to love them as much as I do now. Such great reads that took me out of my reading slump
The perks of being a wallflower and Everything, Everything surprised me a lot. I really liked both of them a lot. I know I'm late. But you know what, I finally picked them up and gave them a try.
The book that surprised me the most was Grace and Fury ! I was like it should be like okay then I read it and it broke me it caused my first ever book hangover and became my favorite read of the year! Which is saying a lot since I read over 400 books this year (though some were rereads)
My most surprising book of 2018 is They Both Die At The End. I thought it was more about the sad part of death, whereas this book was more about enjoying life to the fullest, and that really surprised me in such a positive way! I really, REALLY loved that one!
I was actually really surprised about the rest of the Thousandth Floor series! I wasn't a huge fan of the first book but still decided to give the other 2 a go, and completely loved them!
I finally read Tower of Dawn (which I'd been putting off all year because I wasn't the biggest Chaol fan), and it ended up becoming one of my favourite books of the series! I also read Transcription by Kate Atkinson and was surprised by how much I loved it! It's an adult novel set in WWII, which is not normally my scene, but it was so wonderfully written and clever and witty that I couldn't help but be enthralled by it!
Vicious by V.E. Schwab is one of my surprising reads of the year. I was afraid to venture out to the adult genre. But I pushed myself to take it one page at a time. After reading it, i wanted more! I fell in love with Schwab's writing and world building. wow!
I'm halfway through it and loving it, didn't actually realise it was adult until I noticed her name was initialized (is that even a word?) so didn't have that scare
The book that surprised me the most this year was Paris 1919: Six Months that Changed the World by Margaret Macmillan. I had to read it for a class and I’m not much of a non-fiction fan, so I was quite surprised at how interested I became in reading about the Paris Peace Conference after WWI.
I find the cover of To kill a Kingdom super pretty, and when I heard you talking about it I got the audiobook and wow it was awesome! Also what surprised me was the To all the Boys I've loved before series, I read it because the movie was coming out, but I didn't expect to enjoy it this much :)
The book that surprised me the most was Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda! I read the synopsis and I didn't think it would mesh with me at all. I even read the sample on Goodreads and I still didn't like it. I only read it because my friend wanted to watch the movie. Once I read it though, it became the most relatable book I've ever read and is now in my top 2 of books. I still can't believe I almost didn't read it! That book changed my life!
Pachinko and City of Thieves both surprised me! City of Thieves by David Benioff was a book I picked up on a whim cuz the concept was interesting, but it was sooo good and had a great perspective on WWII that I've never seen before. And Pachinko I knew I would like, but I never thought it would read with as much suspense as it does.
I came as soon as I could!!! YAAAS IM EARLY. Also great job. There’s been a lot of videos you’ve posted. And so many more books thrown into my TBR pile
The Forest of a Thousand Lanterns duology is amazing! Especially the ending of the second book. Wasn't typical at all. Definitely pick up the sequel, Hailey! Definitely pick up the sequels to The Thousandth Floor as well! They're awesome! I want to read Ink so badly.

I bought The Thousandth Floor just because of the cover, but I did end up enjoying too! I read the sequel as well and now I need to read the third one! It's not my favorite series or anything, but I do enjoy it 😊
I loved undead girl gang...the chaos of standing still surprised me so much..I felt the same with daughter of the pirate king... I weirdly loved the cover of to kill a kingdom...
My most surprising book of the year was also my favourite book of the year and that was S.T.A.G.S. It was the first book I picked up this year and I LOVED it! Can’t wait to reread it, but also hoping 2019 is a better reading year because I only managed 20 books this year, a big difference from 100 books in 2017
For contemporary, The Last Boy and Girl in the World was my surprising read. I kind of expected it as a cheesy teen love story, but it was an emotional read! It was very different from the stereotypical YA formula. Its the best YA contemporary I've read this year.
Hailey your puns are always the best! ^^ This Summer I read A Gentlemans Guido to Vice and Virtue and i read in 2 days straight - wahahaha! Another pun! 😂😂😂. I just couldn't stop reading which sadly very seldom happens, I love the characters and i want all the sequels and companions!^^
Definitely for me, it was the Kiss Quotient. I heard a lot of good things but still I wasn't sure since the idea of escorts in a book didn't sit well but I ended up LOVING IT. I loved everything about it. I reread it twice and really wanna go at it a third time.
I wish you were my friend irl! :( I feel we would go along so well. Have you ever thought about doing a fashion video? Like where you buy your stuff, and how you match it up with your makeup? We have similar clothing style and I'd be curious if some of your shopping places are available in my province!
I was pleasantly surprised by To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. I don’t usually read contemporary fiction because it’s just not my favorite genre. After hearing so many great things about this series, I decided to finally pick it up. I was expecting a cute, enjoyable, light-hearted teen romance story. It was that and so much more. It was so character-driven and reflective (my favorite kind of book). I’ve never seen myself in a character as much as I did with Lara Jean. It ended up being a much more profound series than I expected, and inspired me to do a lot of self-reflecting. ❤️
A series that surprised me was Fruits Basket by Natsuki Takaya. It is a manga that I had watched the anime for and loved. I expected to enjoy it because I love the anime, but the manga just blew my expectations out of the water I loved it so much. I was so happy I decided to buy the series it was well worth it.
Is it sad I’ve read none of those books on her list. 😂 Some of them I want to read now though. But Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier was a surprising read. I picked it up because it was a graphic novel and would be a nice palette cleanser/quick read in between books. I was kinda interested in it, but not too sure about the concept. But after reading it I was happy I did because it was a cute, quick read; just what I wanted.
A book that surprised me was The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman. A friend had recomended the series to me and she pitched it as regency shadowhunters 😂 and while thats true I found the series as a whole to be more mature. The protag was inteligent and witty. The romance was important to the plot. Which really surprised me as most romances are treated as subplots.
I’ve just finished reading „This Savage Song” and I thought I would love it but I am so disappointed with it.maybe it’s just not for me. But the writing style wasn’t that bad.
I was surprisingly disappointed in A Court of Frost and Starlight. This book makes me changed my mind about the whole ACOTAR series, I was liked it but now I think it's so problematic.
One book that really surprised me this year was ace of shade by Amanda foody. I had gotten daughter of the burning city (her debut novel) and went into it expecting to love it but it just didn’t click and I ended up dnfing it. I got ace of shades because I’m a hype whore and ended up really loving it.
I want it to be christmas, but I don’t want bookmas to end. The struggle is real
same
Lmao, same.
the book that surprised me was scythe by neal shusterman. going into it I loved the concept but I didn’t realize just how much lore and world building it was going to have in it. I could honestly talk about the book’s philosophy and morals for hours!
Yes! I got it because I loved the concept but I didn't think they would execute it as well as they did.
NaturallyFarrah27 and he definitely did! I can’t wait for the third book !!
I did a presentation on it and the character development in my young adult work shop class and after my teacher said she’s gonna use it, just based off my presentation, for her future classes! I can’t wait till she actually reads it and really sees how great it is!
That's our Neal :') he's been my favourite author for years and people are finally seeing why and it makes me so happy xxx
@@lucylume which of his other books would you recommend?
I’ve been recommending The Nightingale to anyone who will listen since it came out. I’m so, so glad you loved it. It was such an amazing and brilliantly done book with a very sensitive subject being handled beautifully! Everyone should read The Nightingale!
A short history of the girl next door was such a surprise. I had high expectations but then I actually read it and was impaled with so much different emotions. It’s the only book that made me cry (and I NEVER cry when reading books). Definitely recommend
Absolutely loving Bookmas 2018!😍🙌
Anna I’m so glad!!! 💕

I'm blaming my ever-growing TBR list partially on your Vlogmas videos! haha :)
The book that surprised me the most was Grace and Fury ! I was like it should be like okay then I read it and it broke me it caused my first ever book hangover and became my favorite read of the year! Which is saying a lot since I read over 400 books this year (though some were rereads)

That ink cover IS so gorgeous!!! I would want to read it just for that.
Two videos in one day 😍😭😍
I know I felt. The same way
I was actually really surprised about the rest of the Thousandth Floor series! I wasn't a huge fan of the first book but still decided to give the other 2 a go, and completely loved them!

I am also afraid to read it. But I want to read at the mean time
I love it when a book surprises me.
I remember Ink very well because it is in my favorite video of yours, the bookstore vlog.
The book that surprised me this year is everything i never told you by Celeste Ng. I am loving this bookmas a lot...
The book that surprised me the most this year was Paris 1919: Six Months that Changed the World by Margaret Macmillan. I had to read it for a class and I’m not much of a non-fiction fan, so I was quite surprised at how interested I became in reading about the Paris Peace Conference after WWI.

I am actually on the same page with you on a lot of these book, I am yet to try them. I will keep it in mind for the next year.
I love BOOKMAS 2018!!! Thanks for putting in the effort, I would never be able to commit to all of these videos and unique video ideas!
Pachinko and City of Thieves both surprised me! The 'Miss Peregrine's' series really surprised me this year. I didn't think it would be my thing and was so happy I loved it as much as I did
I haven’t heard much about Chaos, but it seems so great
The Forest of a Thousand Lanterns duology is amazing! Especially the ending of the second book. Wasn't typical at all. Definitely pick up the sequel, Hailey! Definitely pick up the sequels to The Thousandth Floor as well! They're awesome!

Hailey your puns are always the best! ^^
This Summer I read A Gentlemans Guido to Vice and Virtue and i read in 2 days straight - wahahaha! Another pun! 😂😂😂.
I just couldn't stop reading which sadly very seldom happens, I love the characters and i want all the sequels and companions!^^
ink has such a gorgeous cover and it's great to hear that you enjoyed it!!
surprising reads are the best reads! 💗 I have to read The Nightingale soon!
I was hesitant to read The Kiss of Deception by Mary E Pearson. I was wonderful surprised by the book and it is now one of my favorites.
I love historical fiction and I want to read the Nightingale. I saw your video where u mention Nightingale your 1st best novel in 2018.
Definitely for me, it was the Kiss Quotient. I heard a lot of good things but still I wasn't sure since the idea of escorts in a book didn't sit well but I ended up LOVING IT. I loved everything about it. I reread it twice and really wanna go at it a third time.
I felt exactly the same way about Daughter of the Pirate King!
The book that surprised me the most was the Poet X.
Melissa Bryson that’s a great one!
I read Ink, it was amazing I read the second one straight away
Ink sounds like my type of book! Added to my TBR for sure 😍
I wish you were my friend irl! :( I feel we would go along so well. Have you ever thought about doing a fashion video? Like where you buy your stuff, and how you match it up with your makeup? Hey Hailey my favorite book to read is Bridge to Terabithia book
Yessss Undead Girl Gang was the same for me too!

I’m so excited to do this video myself!
i love your videos so much!! keep up the good work
Is it sad I’ve read none of those books on her list. 😂 Some of them I want to read now though. But Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier was a surprising read. I love your videos!😍🌟
my biggest surprise was definetly a list of cages!

I just love your videos and puns 😂💕 #FavouriteBooktuber
AHHH omg okay I know you said you you aren’t that into middle grade BUT you should totally read The false prince by Jennifer A Nielsen ✨
This was a great video idea!
I’ve just finished reading „This Savage Song” and I thought I would love it but I am so disappointed with it.maybe it’s just not for me. But the writing style wasn’t that bad.
This Savage Song is good but Our Dark Duet is just crap
I disagree. I loved both this savage song and our dark duet a lot and it surprised me by how much i loved it
I didn't love it either tbh
I want to read a lot of these but am hesitant
Read the sequel to Forest of Thousand lanterns.
I LOVE BOOKMAS HUHU I DON'T WANT IT TO END HUHU
ayyeeeeeeeee new subscriber your vid's are binge worthy
I was surprisingly disappointed in A Court of Frost and Starlight. This book makes me changed my mind about the whole ACOTAR series, I was liked it but now I think it's so problematic.
The cruel Prince.😊
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love this😍 video
One book that really surprised me this year was ace of shade by Amanda foody. I had gotten daughter of the burning city (her debut novel) and went into it expecting to love it but it just didn’t click and I ended up dnfing it. I got ace of shades because I’m a hype whore and ended up really loving it.
I was so iffy about To Kill A Kingdom
Rock on
First!
You're so cute
