You definitely need to read "The Sandman" by ETA Hoffmann. We discussed it in a class about villains this semester and it is in itself a weird and creepy story. But if you compare "The Nutcracker" to it, "The Nutcracker" appears to be the weirder one of the two novellas.

I didn't get to read anything by E.T.A Hoffmann during my school years but another German class some friends were in did read The Sandman. Hoffmann's work is really something one needs to get used to from what I heard lol I'm gonna read The Nutcracker as well this month. After seeing a couple of adaptions of the ballet in movie form I really wanna know the original source material^^
