Why is everyone talking about ozempic? It is the latest weight loss craze…but what do we know about taking ozempic if you are TTC now or in the near future? What impact can it have on fertility?
Ozempic is a prescription medication which is FDA approved to treat type 2 diabetes.
Ozempic works by increasing the effects of insulin and reducing the effects of another hormone called glucagon. It also slows emptying of the stomach and thereby reduces absorption of sugars. It also suppresses appetite and causes weight loss via these mechanisms.
Ozempic is being used A LOT, off-label, to help with weight loss. It has been shown to be an effective medical treatment for obesity. It is also being used by normal weight or only slightly overweight individuals to help with weight loss - and has been touted by several celebrities and people like Elon Musk as being an effective weight loss strategy.
There isn’t a ton of data on ozempic and fertility. Ozempic is NOT recommended if you are actively TTC or already pregnant. There are some animal studies with evidence of potential adverse impacts on fetal development. There is a lack of human data to prove it is safe during pregnancy - therefore most doctors recommend stopping ozempic 2-3 months before getting pregnant, to allow it to wash out of your system.
Obesity and being overweight can impact both male and female fertility - and losing weight (whether by the help of ozempic or other means) can help to restore normal testosterone levels and regular ovulation - but there is also some evidence that ozempic can have a paradoxical effect (limited data- but worth noting). Also extreme weight loss can negatively impact your fertility.

What are your thoughts on women taking this who accidentally get pregnant? Should this be a concern?

      Obviously YES!
This is a synthetic drug causing Malnutrition in people. It's extremely dangerous for the baby in a pregnancy and can cause all kinds of birth defects and miscarriages.
Studies on animals showed large increase in miscarriages and birth defects. It's extremely selfish to take Ozempic if pregnant.
