When I first heard him singing his 'Polk Salad Annie' back in 1969 or 1970 I was so impressed of his voice. He had a great sense of rhythm, in fact he sounded to me like Jimmie Hendrix, both in his style of singing and guitar playing, for he was a terrific guitarist. Rest in peace Tony Joe White.
I saw him perform with a band about 1971-72 when all I knew about him was the top 40 release of "Polk Salad Annie"; (as you know, it was a big AM radio hit at the time). But when I saw him I was really surprised at what an ass kicking guitar player he was. He put on a great show.
I first heard this song as a kid.....when I finally saw video of him, I was shocked to find out he was white! His voice sure doesn't sound like it....also, that's about the best clean tone for a strat ever!......
And this must be the same Jeff Hale playing drums in this clip?? I have this show on DVD at home. You studs rock the real deal music! Rest in peace to our swamp rockin hero...
I always remember seeing him on black and white TV in the 60s. Great guitarist and cool singer and the guy could rock. Thanks for the memories and influence, Tony. Sadly missed.
Yeah right is that why Elvis sold out every single concert he ever done TJW was a blues singer Elvis could sing anything from blues to country gospel pop rock & Roll he may not have wrote many of his own songs but he made other artists richer by covering there songs
Rest in Peace, Tony Joe. I luv ya!. And what a fabulous rendition of Polk Salad. Usually I prefer the original recording but Tony Joe's improvisations make this one special.
Always thought this was a black man when i was growing up. My Dad "❤loved❤" this song! That's how i know it😊😊 And i always thought TJW was singin', "Pork Salad" Annie🤣😭😂 After all these decades, i now know what polkeweed or, poke weed is!😊
True story, Tony Joe performed just before it’s demise, at the Grand Emporium here in Kansas City. Because the owner was closing the club, there were no promotions for the show. There, about 30-40 of us Tony Joe diehards were treated to 2 hours of pure TJ. After which, Tony meandered from table to table just drinking and swapping stories. A true hero of mine. I later learned that he and his son were drinking on Tony’s front porch in Kentucky, the son went inside to replenish the ice ,when he returned,Tony was sitting on the old couch and looked like he had fallen asleep. The doctor said it was a heart attack
Just got the news of Tony's sudden passing! Can't believe it...another of the great legends gone! Rock it good with ole Waylon in the heavens kind sir!
Though the studio version has more musical instruments, I like this live version best. Tony performs here with more feeling and faster tempo. All three are great performers!
If I was in a cover band and was asked to play 3 songs to exemplify "Swamp" rock, I'd pick this one to lead off, "Down Home Girl" (copying the Stones' style) and "Born On the Bayou". What's most impressive about this version is it's done with only 3 instruments.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the Hendrix in him

Much like Elvis.
Rip my friend
His guitar playing and clean Strat tone are amazing. RIP
This is such a great performance. That’s a man right there.
He performed this song in Austin just a little ways from my home in Corpus Christi. Bless your heart Tony Joe.
Most underrated guitar player ever. His guitar playing was so clean and pure
Can't get enough of that swamp blues guitar playing !
I first heard this song as a kid.....when I finally saw video of him, I was shocked to find out he was white! His voice sure doesn't sound like it....also, that's about the best clean tone for a strat ever!......
Rest In Peace Tony. Thank you for all the amazing music. Unique voice and charisma that no one could match. 🙏
You are so right. Still with him here in CC. TJW gotta love it.
Tobacco road😄
Nothin against him but Elvis could do more than match it, he surpassed it, but you already knew that didn't ya!!
@@eclay432Stop it it Elvis could not play a guitar like this man.Stupid comment
This not just a song, it's a story.....and amazingly told, I could listen to this all day long....Awesome!!

And this must be the same Jeff Hale playing drums in this clip?? I have this show on DVD at home. You studs rock the real deal music! Rest in peace to our swamp rockin hero...
I like it I think it is cool
You said what I was thinking when I clicked on this....It really doesn't get old....this is cooler than shit!
I always remember seeing him on black and white TV in the 60s. Great guitarist and cool singer and the guy could rock. Thanks for the memories and influence, Tony. Sadly missed.
Tony Joe White had SOUL. Man, he could hit some great licks. Blues, soul, rock and country. R.I.P.
THE best version ever, even Elvis could'nt top it. Unique voice and style, to be sadly missed...
Well..of course this was Tony's song..soulful as all his stuff was...but
E.came pretty darn close.
elvis was no match for TJW
@@suzieparis6821 Elvis version was different a big band version
Yeah right is that why Elvis sold out every single concert he ever done TJW was a blues singer Elvis could sing anything from blues to country gospel pop rock & Roll he may not have wrote many of his own songs but he made other artists richer by covering there songs
@@suzieparis6821 i like both versions anyway TJW and Elvis and he actually liked Elvis"s version Elvis only did it live not in the studio
Although recorded by many artists, no one does it as well as Tony Joe! Great talent and voice!
Elvis gives him a run for the money and out performs him !
